Bohol Chosen as Pilot for Jer-jer Education
« on: June 20, 2010, 07:23:38 AM »
Published by Sunday Post

Bohol is one  of the 10 provinces and one city chosen by the Department of Education as pilot centers in the teaching of sex education to  Grave V and VI pupils.

In a check with Dr. Lorna Rances, Bohol schools division superintendent last night, she said she was not sure if the pilot study was about sex education. Her instruction was for Adult Reproductive Health (ARH). Whether they are  the “same banana” (ARH or SE), Dr. Rances is yet to receive a memorandum to this effect.

Whatever specific subject is going to be taught beginning this school year, Dr. Rances confirmed that ARH will be test piloted in three school districts namely Ubay, Carmen and Talibon with expansion districts like Dauis, Buenavista and Loboc.

As to the specific schools in these districts, Dr. Rances did not identify.

Bohol along with Ifugao, Mountain Province, Masbate, Eastern Samar, Maguindanao, Lanao del Sur, Sulu, Tawi tawi and Sultan Kudarat. The lone city in the list is Olangapo.

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

A news story that appeared in the Cebu Daily News last Tuesday showed that the DepEd is teaching sex education not ARH  although they may end up with the same connotation.

The story said the DepEd has been teaching sex education before it was integrated in other subjects like Biology but this time the Catholic Church is protesting a specific United Nations Population Fund Project to teach sex education in schools.

Education officials insist that the bishops have nothing to worry about because DepEd was open to deleting portions of the teaching modules that the Church would find offensive.

“In Grade V, teaching about the reproductive system is very clinical” said DepEd Asst. Sec. Teresita Inchiong. “They have models showing the flow of the sperm cell. Copulation is not there (but) the flow of the egg cell meeting (the sperm cell) is there”.

For Grade V, sex education would be included in the Science and Health subject that would have lessons on the reproductive system.

For Grade VI, it would be integrated in Edukasyong Pantahanan at Pangkabuhayan and it would include lessons on the  “proper behaviour between peers of different gender”, personal hygiene, and the problems caused by unwanted pregnancy.

okay ra man pud ni...awareness sa atong mga kabata-an. Ang importante lang nga ang maestra mo teach ani well verse jud siya and dili magdala ug hilas sa mga bata. secondly, naa jud follow-up sa mga ginikanan in case naai questions inig abot nila sa balay, like doing their homework.

open-minded na lang jud ang mga ginikanan. maski unsai tagu2x nila bahin sa sex, nah mas anad pa ang mga kabataan about ani. ang danger is mamisinformed na hinuon sila through friends.

Why Bohol? Our kids are still well behaved until maybe they reached highschool. Dili kaayo expose atong mga kabataan kay close atong family circles. Too much knowledge is dangerous...opening the portal of curiosity.

yes, that's why i'm against this.  this curiosity thing can open the gates to knowledge beyond one's maturity to take maturely.

He he, again, by opening the gates of knowledge early one might later on be more prepared to navigate the unforgiving labyrinths of life...

I'm not Pro nor against it since I don't know EXACTLY what they're gonna teach but I do have a theory about why Bohol.

The presence of a sizable foreign population in Panglao island might be factor. Naa mahipus sa DSWD Tagbilaran usahay mga underage nga buring, as young as 13 and 14.

On the upside, if this subject is taught by the right person, mawala ang hilas  ug hasta sad ang curiosity. Unsa pa man ilang ika-curious nga gihanyag naman jud ang tanan sa ilang atubangan.  If I had my way, I would put special emphasis on the STDs and the domino effects of unwanted pregnancy, highlighting physical, social and psychological effects. For a society like ours, SOCIAL implications would probably be the highest on my list.  For my STD lesson, I'd probably show a  very graphic illustration of what a gonorrhea stricken or syphilis stricken penis or vagina looks like. Maau nang ma-shock gamay para mopatak jud sa ilang mga pahak nga dili gyud ma curious.

On the otherhand....if ang mo handle or ang mo tudlo magdala ug hilas, the lectures would be very vague and mysterious, it would probably cause the kids to be ever more curious and then it would be a disaster simply put. Naa bag-o past time atong kabataan..... (tuktuk tawn mo )

This all depends on the teachers.

Did they say who will teach them ?   Hopefully, specially trained individuals who really do know how to teach this subject and who knows how to answer 11 and 12yo questions honestly and informatively....dli lang kay bisan kinsa nalang. Mao na ron.

Hahay....knowing our dear pinas, murag mahulog nga bisan kinsa nalang pa teach-on, no extra training.  Lets hope not but knowing how things work, its leaning that way.  :(

I am very conservative and protective with my nieces and nephews, and it will surely break my heart if they do things like that very early. Elementary kids are kids, I still race in the river with boys that age.
