We cannot deny the fact that you have one of the best international basketball records among local coaches. We certainly remember and will always credit you for how you steered the country to the 2012 William Jones Cup championships; you helped us secure a world cup berth in 2014 by winning a silver medal in the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship, which we hosted at home. These events brought joy to millions of Filipino Basketball fans, including us, thousands of passionate OFW’s who watch Gilas games to ease our loneliness from being so far away from our loved ones.
However, those days are over and we kindly ask you to step down and stop living off from your past glories. We would like to remind you of the truth, that your track record as the national team’s head coach post-2014 FIBA World Cup has been below average at best. We still remember how you piloted the national team to a seventh-place finish in the 2014 Asian Games where you infamously instructed Marcus Douthit to shoot in the opponent’s basket in a desperate attempt to force an overtime. Also, in your return as head coach in 2017, the Philippines only managed to finish seventh in the FIBA Asia Cup, and of course the multiple losses by huge margins against Australia, including the ugly brawl at the Philippine Arena. Under your recent leadership, zero wins over South Korea, Lebanon, Iran, Australia, and New Zealand. Above all, we will never forget the pain you brought us in the last SEAGAMES when you surrendered our gold medal record to Indonesia.
We understand that you did not apply for the job as you have claimed numerous times, but please listen to the Filipino people and be sensitive enough to hear that the clamor for your resignation continues to grow louder day by day. Please stop ignoring us by shutting off your social media accounts. Please stop telling us that these misfortunes you caused are part of the process that will help us get better. As one of our readers mentioned, you should already be at a polishing stage at this point. Please try to understand that your prime in the international level is over, and show a bit of humility by learning to acknowledge your flaws and your own limitations.
As you said, you were happily retired, and doing your work, enjoying your life, coaching your professional team, but somebody has to do the job. The best person is no longer you, because the Filipino fans deserve better. Please give up your role and enjoy your life with your family and focus on your professional team instead.
If your ulterior motive is to really serve your country, please resign now and give way to someone better.
Sincerely,
Passionate Filipino Basketball fans
