The Bohol Poverty Reduction Management Office (BPRMO) and the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) facilitated the first diagnostic workshop on cooperatives at Pengavitor restaurant in Poblacion, Talibon.

The activity was a follow-up to the Needs Assessment Workshop held last April 23 at the Bohol Cultural Center wherein it was identified that there is a need to conduct a training on financial management of cooperatives, according to Arian Sulla, area manager for Visayas of the PBSP.

There were at least 30 participants who attended the workshop.

Guests and municipal officials from the five towns of the second district of Bohol, Talibon, Getafe, Trinidad, Ubay and President Garcia, also showed up to express support to the program.

Lizlei Puno, corporate volunteer of PBSP, said that there is a need to have a trainor’s training which will be done by cluster of five municipalities with a total of 15 cooperatives.

There shall also be representations from three cooperatives in every municipality and additional participants from MCDC, BPRMO, Provincial Cooperative Development Council and Cooperative Development Authority.

BPRMO Head Antonieto “Boy” Pernia expressed appreciation to the chairperson of the Sangguniang Bayan Committee on Cooperative and Mayor Juanario Item, who is a cooperative-oriented himself, for having created a Municipal Cooperative Development Council even before Governor Erico B. Aumentado signed Executive Order 006 which calls for the creation of an M-C-D-C in every municipality.

Pernia was impressed to notice that the office of Talibon MCDC was furnished with the facilities including an air-conditioner and computer units.

The Talibon MCDC has two personnel who man the office and monitor the 33 cooperatives in Talibon.

Pernia also cited that of the 800 registered cooperatives in Bohol, only 400 remain active. The rest were dissolved because of mismanagement as the officers and staff of these cooperatives lack the knowledge in running the cooperatives.

Governor Aumentado had earlier explained that cooperativism will help address the issue on poverty.

That’s why during the administration of Governor Aumetado, BPRMO was created, making Bohol the only province which has set up an office that addresses the needs of the poor. (AV-PGMA) --press release
