ONCE UPON A TIME IN TAGBILARAN (Circa 1900)
Across the scene a group of pallbearers carry the remains of a dead citizen on the way to a side gate of St Joseph's parish church, while in the distance, standing proud and seemingly immutable can be seen the mansion of the Torralbas, the Spanish-built escuela de niñas and the formidable stone enclosure of the Church. A lesson of history caught by the dispassionate eye of a camera. Today, standing at the same spot, it is hard to imagine such a scene once unfolded here, peopled as it is now by candle vendors, balloon sellers and buko stands blandishing soothing refreshments to the wearily alive. The once open space is now covered by the giant acacia tree and the bulk of Garden Cafe and the Children's library.
