For many, it was just a surprising turn of events when the city's Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Federation elected last Thursday barangay Dampas SK chairman Rammy June Alturas instead of Poblacion-1 SK chairman Michael Kapirig who came out an early favorite weeks before the polls.

Even when the rift between Deputy Mayor Mariano Uy and Kag. Edgar Kapirig hit the headlines, the younger Kapirig was still favored to win the polls as the official choice of City Mayor Dan Lim.

The feud between Uy and Kapirig, both close allies of the mayor, was blamed for the last minute change when the young Kapirig was ditched from the SK race on the day of election.

Alturas filed his candidacy for SK Federated president early morning Thursday while Kapirig chose to run as vice president.

Kapirig said in an interview with the Chronicle that he backed out of the race to honor a term-sharing deal with Alturas.

Out of 15 city SK chairmen, all of the 11 who were allied with the mayor, voted for Alturas.

Alturas's opponent, Poblacion-2 SK chair Manuel Alberto dela Serna obtained 4 votes.

A SACRIFICE?

Insiders at City Hall, however said that Kapirig was discarded when his father, Kag. Kapirig, refused to issue a public apology to Uy.

The mayor last week declared he is on the side of Uy, when the latter filed a complaint for slander with damages against Kag. Kapirig.

Attempts to mediate the two proved futile until the SK federated elections when the mayor's camp decided to drop the younger Kapirig.

Uy, in a separate interview, denied he had a hand in the eleventh hour decision.
