Provincial Athletic Meet: The Conclusion

By Rey Anthony Chiu

UNIT 1's stinking performance in the recently concluded Provincial Athletic Meet is enough reason for some local officials to pinch their noses, not for hosts Catigbian.

Themselves unwilling witnesses on how visiting Unit III and Unit 2 routed the crowd favorite Unit I into submission, Catigbian Mayor Roberto Salinas and his performance team said enough during the post activity evaluation attended by local officials and sports authorities Monday, February 11.

At the post evaluation of the athletic meet, which they ably and successfully hosted, local authorities agree at one thing: the Unit's lackluster performance tells of the absence of local support for training and development program for athletes.

Without it, there is a far lesser chance of motivating local athletes to excel, Catigbian officials agree.

Team Unit I composed of the first Congressional District towns placed a dismal third over all, for an athletic competition of six participating teams.

The realization of how ill-prepared and the apparent absence of an honest training program for athletes pushed the local officials to finally institutionalize the Catigbian Sports Council (CSC).

While this may nothing but a formality, Mayor Salinas, who heads the council said it would be an honest to goodness council which shall focus on addressing the local development and implementation of the sports programs as identified by the LGU.

"This (CSC) is established with the burning desire to help sports development of the young students and also to contribute to the Unit's standing in the next competitions we are joining," Salinas said.

Aside from poor the perceived training of athletes, several issues have surfaced later which observers believe could have adversely affected athlete's performance.

Issues of the controversy over food rations, athlete cash incentives and allowances came surfacing over the radio lanes this week, necessitating more than Unit 1 authorities' cursory glance.

Many would say that they too have set their local sports councils that train athletes, but most of them are on paper, observers have commented.
