The Philippine team took home a bronze medal and four medallions of excellence in its re-entry in the recently-concluded ASEAN Skills Competition (ASC) in Indonesia.

The 16 Filipino delegates, who competed in 10 trade areas during the week-long event, earlier trained in various qualifications under the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).

“This is a feat for our skilled Filipino workers considering that we are like making a debut to the competition after years of absence,” Secretary Joel Villanueva, TESDA Director General said.

“After this relatively strong start, we will achieve a golden finish in the coming skills competition,” he added.

For the past seven years, the country did not field an entry into the contest until Villanueva's stint, which recognized anew the value of exposing the Filipino technical vocational experts in the international arena.

This year's competition was the ninth since the ASC started in 1993.

Pristine de Guzman, of the School of Fashion and the Arts based in Makati City, led the hauling of recognition with a bronze medal in the area of Fashion Technology.De Guzman was also bestowed with the Best of Nation Award in her trade area.

Medallions of excellence were awarded to four Filipino competitors namely: Joselito EJ Ayalde of AMA Bulacan for Web Design; Nilo Maquiling of Samson Tech based in Metro Manila for Refrigeration and Airconditioning; and Nhar Chello Agasang and Ardee Mark Saqueton, both of the MFI Foundation Inc. based in Metro Manila for Industrial Automation.

The other trade areas where the Philippine team competed were in IT Network Administration, Hairdressing, Electronics, Beauty Therapy, Mechatronics and Caring.

“We will do a thorough assessment of our performance in the competition, and will do what is needed in terms of the selection of competitors, classroom and hands-on training and acclimatizing them to the contest milieu,” Villanueva said.

“What’s important for now is we are able to showcase the skills of Filipinos, and strengthened our ties with our neighboring nations who are similarly engaged in beefing up technical vocational education and training,” he said.
