The
2014 World Cycling Championships will be held in
Spain after it was confirmed this Wednesday that the regional government of
Castilla-Leon agreed to guarantee the
4 million euros needed to host the event.
The World Championships are to be held in the city of
Ponferrada in the province of Leon in the
northwest Spain. However, the economic crisis and the announcement of slashing cutbacks in the funding of Spanish sport, in some cases by as much as 50 percent by the Spanish Sports Committee (CED), had raised serious doubts over whether or not the town would be able to afford hosting such an important event.
A press conference held Wednesday by the Mayor of Ponferrada, Carlos Lopez Riesco, has finally banished those doubts as he confirmed the funding would be available with the regional authority providing a guarantee for the payment of the 4 million euros, required by the International Cycling Union, as well as providing a further 800,000 euros over two years to help pay for the World Championships.
Riesco added that hosting an event that lasts for a week and which will be televised all over the world represents a magnificent opportunity for this predominantly rural part of Spain.
