Manny “Pac-Man†Pacquiao is now a certified Boholano. This after the Bohol Provincial Development Council (PDC), Provincial Peace and Order Council (PPOC), Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP), and the Bohol chapters of the League of Municipalities (LMP), Vice Mayors (VMLP) and Barangays (LnB) in a joint meeting Friday at the Bohol Tropics Resort presided over by Gov. Erico Aumentado passed a joint resolution declaring the pugilist from General Santos City an adopted son of the province.
Pacquiao, his wife Jinky and their children Emmanuel Jr., 8, Michael Stephen, 7 and Mary Divine Grace, 2, – with staff and security escorts – were in Bohol for a vacation although the Pound for Pound King of Boxing’s stay was interrupted twice. Staying only for lunch when he first arrived, Pacquiao left en route to New York to receive the 2008 ‘Fighter of the Year' award from the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA). The family stayed on. It turned out that he and Aumentado were on the same boat from Cebu City.
The boxer had to leave anew last Friday however to be with his brother who was to celebrate his birthday.
Barring changes, and if his hectic schedule will still allow it, a source close to Pacquiao said he may be back on Tuesday for one week more of vacation to experience Bohol’s powdery fine white sand beaches and other sites. He will be presented with the joint resolution then.
Aumentado said the People’s Champion and the Ring Magazine’s Champion after winning his fights against Marco Antonio Barrera, Eric Morales, Oscar Larios, Juan Manuel Marquez, Oscar de la Hoya and Ricky Hatton who he demolished in a spectacular and unprecedented fashion definitely makes him the ultimate crowd-drawer.
Unlawful elements temporarily stop their nefarious trade – and even rebels whether in the Philippines or Iraq and elsewhere – lay down their arms and sometimes watch side by side the ring exploits of “Greatest Living Fighter in the History of the Boxing World†as nicknamed by Top Rank Chief Bob Arum.
Forbes Magazine has since placed Pacquiao in the 6th position among the world’s 10 highest paid athletes and berthed him also among the 100 Most Powerful Celebrities in the World for his spectator-drawing capacity and his legendary influence on the people of the world, especially the Philippines where during all his fights, complete peace and order reigned in the land even in areas infested by rebels and Abu Sayyaf members because all eyes are glued to his fights via TV and the other high-tech media used for the purpose, Aumentado observed.
Time Magazine also lists him among the most influential people of the world.
His humility, religiosity and good character have also endeared him much to the public and his virtues are admired and appreciated by the Boholano people so that for his sterling deeds and admirable virtues, Pacquiao “deserves to be acknowledged as adopted son of Bohol ,†the resolution stated.
