Lorenzo the Parrot is Arrested
« on: September 18, 2010, 09:51:18 AM »
Police seize parrot trained as drug gang lookout

A parrot in the Colombian city of Barranquilla has become a jail-bird after it was seized during a police drugs raid.

According to environmental authorities, Lorenzo the parrot was trying to tip-off a local drug cartel when officers conducted an undercover raid.

"This parrot was sending out alerts," said Environmental Police Officer Hollman Oliveira. "You could say he was some sort of watch bird."

Authorities claim Lorenzo is one of nearly 1700 parrots seized by officials after being trained by drug traffickers to act as lookouts.

Lorenzo caused quite the stir as he was presented to journalists. The well-trained creature even showed off his lookout skills as he yelled out: "Run, run you are going to get caught."

Police colonel Freddy Veloza told reporters: "He spent the whole morning saying that".

Despite Lorenzo's attempts, Veloza's officers still managed to seize more than two-hundred weapons, a stolen motorcycle and a large quantity of marijuana.

At least four men and two other birds were also arrested in the raids. (ITN)

gikan ni lorenzo the cat model, naa na poy lorenzo the parrot.  what's in this name that makes it popular?

p.s.  those druglords must know their children's books, anyhow.  i found this editorial review:

From Publishers Weekly

"Well-crafted stories sprinkled with Spanish and set in Mexico depict the antics of a personable if pesky family parrot.  Lorenzo lives by a simple code: whatever he does, he does to protect and enrich the lives of his people.  To approaching visitors, "He squawked loudly as if to say . . .'Behave yourself or answer to me.' " In a notable, somewhat unusual picture-book device, Johnston presents four separate "chapters," in one of which--"La Reina"--Papa's repairs on his old car are interrupted by Lorenzo's unscheduled dip in the motor oil.  Although the children bathe the naughty bird, "the oil would take a long time to come off."  In another story, Lorenzo creates new decor underfoot when he leaves scratchy clawprints on the tiles Papa makes for Mama's new floor.  Rendered in chalky earth tones, Polito's illustrations, though tending toward the rudimentary, transmit a feeling that is at once exotic and familiar.  The security to be found in living everyday events in an uncomplicated manner shines through both text and pictures and conveys a feeling of comfort and warmth. Ages 6-12."

if i'm not mistaken, there must also be a cia agent named lorenzo.

in keeping with that quintessential british spy james bond ("the name is bond, james bond..."), lorenzo the cia must also say, "the name is bran, lorenzo bran..."

real, real cute!  i considered dressing up my cats, too, inspired by lorenzo the model cat.  to think that cat clothes are available in the philippines...  unfortunately, my cats (they're just too many to be dressed up, to begin with) don't even like cat collars. :-[  sayang.

hehe, how many cats do you have, if you don't mind my asking?

Our Kaiser hates getting dressed, tho my dad puts on a dog sweater for him during winter season. It's actually pretty cute seeing him with his green sweater, ha ha ha.

I'll post pictures someday. :)

23 as of two months ago, two had died, then plus 6 now; 2 will be homed soon.  next to a beloved cat's demise, the latter is hard to do.  but i have to do it for practical reasons, i.e. we only have so much space for a number of cats.  i keep only the shy, sickly, and maladjusted ones, just so they won't be harmed.  the good ones i do my best to home elsewhere. :'(

(whew!  the last cat that had died made me poorer by 6k+ pesos in medical care.  our son who had to go to the doctor at the same time gave us a bill of only 2k+ pesos.  weird.)

Isles,

So you really are a catwoman, hehe. 23 cats and counting? Wow. As for the adopting and caring for the injured animals, that truly is a noble cause, i am sure that the animals you're taking care of right now really appreciate that.

I will agree that the cost of veterinary care in the Philippines is a bit expensive. We recently acquired a Doberman Puppy (who was part of the liter that was fathered by my dad's dog in the Philippines, Zulu (a brown Doberman)). Anyways, our recent addition to the household in Tagbilaran is a black doberman named Helmut Segundo (yours truly named him, btw). he he he. I took him to the vet in Tagbilaran, and the cost to get his shots, as well as de-worming amounted to almost 3k pesos combined. That doesn't include the anti-parasitic soap bars that i bought for Helmut.

PS. He is so adorable. So cute.

PPS. I shall share pictures.
