Despite the thousands of people that gathered at the Presidential and Vice Presidential inauguration on June 30 at the Quirino Grandstand in Luneta, celebrity watchers were acutely aware of something missing. It seemed that what’s more important than the ones that showed up were the ones that did not.
A glaring absence in the Kris Aquino contingent were her husband, cager James Yap, with whom she’s newly estranged; and her best friend and erstwhile co-host on “The Buzz,†Boy Abunda.
With the celebrity factor a little bit reduced by his absence, especially since there had been a great deal of interest in his decisions following that much talked-about non-offer of a supposed Cabinet position in the Aquino administration, Abunda surprised many when he opted skip the inauguration, but with good reason. Abunda attended the oath-taking of his sister, newly-elected Mayor Ma. Fe Abunda in Borongan, Samar.
Now, with Kris’s self-imposed shut down of her Twitter account—where she would famously make pronouncements and announcements about everything, including various personal matters—James’ non-appearance was unexpected since both he and President Noynoy already announced his attendance to the media earlier.
However, it was shortly after James’ assurance that he would show up at the inauguration that Kris announced on “The Buzz†that she and James were splitting up. “With finality I can say, ako sumuko na,†she told Boy.
At the inauguration, reporters noted, however, that Kris hardly showed any grief over the matter. When cornered by “TV Patrol,†Kris replied, albeit with a smile, “’Wag mo na akong tanungin niyan.â€
In another interview, this time with “24 Oras,†she expounded that, “Hindi ko naman siya pinagbawalan. Hindi na kami nagko-communicate. I also think na siguro baka naman inisip din niya on his own na ‘wag nang makadagdag sa gulo and ibigay ang araw na ito kay Noy. Kasi siguro kahit hindi man maganda ang naging ending namin, masasabi naman siguro ni James na naging mabuting bayaw sa kanya si Noy.â€
