A transit of Venus across the Sun takes place when the planet Venus passes directly between the Sun and Earth, becoming visible against (and hence obscuring a small portion of) the solar disk. During a transit, Venus can be seen from Earth as a small black disk moving across the face of the Sun. The duration of such transits is usually measured in hours (the transit of 2004 lasted six hours). A transit is similar to a solar eclipse by the Moon. While the diameter of Venus is almost four times that of the Moon, Venus appears smaller, and travels more slowly across the face of the Sun, because it is much farther away from Earth. Observations of transits of Venus helped scientists use the principle of parallax to calculate the distance between the Sun and the Earth.

Transits of Venus are among the rarest of predictable astronomical phenomena. They occur in a pattern that repeats every 243 years, with pairs of transits eight years apart separated by long gaps of 121.5 years and 105.5 years. The periodicity is a reflection of the fact that the orbital periods of Earth and Venus are close to 8:13 and 243:395 commensurabilities.

A transit of Venus took place on 8 June 2004 and the next will be on 5 and 6 June 2012. The previous pair of transits were in December 1874 and December 1882. After 2012, the next transits of Venus will be in December 2117 and December 2125.

A transit of Venus can be safely observed by taking the same precautions used when observing the partial phases of a solar eclipse. Staring at the brilliant disk of the Sun (the photosphere) with the unprotected eye can quickly cause serious and often permanent eye damage. --Wiki

The next transit of Venus will occur on June 5–6 in 2012, succeeding the previous transit on June 8, 2004. After 2012, the next transits of Venus will be in December 2117 and December 2125.

The transit will be best viewed from the Pacific Ocean. North America will be able to see the start of the transit, while South Asia, the Middle East, and most of Europe will catch the end of it. The transit will not be visible in most of South America or western Africa. The regions from which the transit is visible are shown in the map below.

As Galileo invented his first telescope in 1609 the first chance to observe a Venus transit using modern optical devices came with the transits of 1631 and 1639. Five years before the 1631 transit, in 1627, Johannes Kepler became the first person to predict a transit of Venus. Kepler successfully predicted the 1631 event. However, Kepler was unable to determine where would be the best location to observe the transit, nor did he realize that in 1631 the transit would not be observable in most of Europe. Therefore, no one made arrangements to travel to where they could see it, and this transit was missed.

Fortunately, 8 years later on December 4, 1639, a young amateur astronomer by the name of Jeremiah Horrocks became the first person in modern history to predict, observe, and record a Venus transit. Horrocks corrected Kepler’s earlier calculations and realized what we now know about Venus transits, that they occur eight years apart after long (very long) waits. It is commonly stated that he performed his observations from Carr House in Much Hoole, near Preston England. Horrocks also told his friend, another amateur astronomer by the name of William Crabtree, about the coming predicted transit and he also spotted the planet’s silhouette on the solar disk. Crabtree probably observed near Broughton, Manchester England. Although Horrocks was uncertain when the transit would begin, he was lucky enough to guess the time so that he was able to observe part of it. He used a telescope to shine the image onto a white card, thus safely observing the transit without harming his eyes. Multiple transits are very, very, very rare occurrences, but do happen. It is possible for there to be a solar eclipse and a transit of Venus at the same time. The last time this took place was in the year 15,607 BC. The next solar eclipse plus Venus transit will occur on April 5, 15,232.

It is also possible for Mercury and Venus to transit the Sun at the same time. That’s right, both of Earth’s inner planetary neighbors perfectly lining up with the Earth’s orbit and the Sun so that an observer on Earth could see both tiny shadows passing in front of our Sun at the same time. The last time this happened was in the year 373,173 BC. The next time the simultaneous transit of the Sun by both planets will occur will be July 26, 69,163. Will man even be around to see this far off transit? --

oh, no.  i'm scheduled to travel on such a date.  :( maayo unta pohon ug wa ko sa eroplano aning exact time... type ra ba gyod nako ning looking at the heavens, anything about astronomy labaw pag mga astronomical phenomena.

Most people don’t begin the week with thoughts of staring directly at the sun, but this week is different.

That’s because Venus, the second planet in our solar system, is going to be visible as a small black circle with the sun behind it for almost seven hours, beginning Tuesday at 3:09 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time.

It is a rare phenomenon, occurring in pairs about every 120 years. The transit last occurred in 2004 as the first half of the 21st-century pair. The next Transit of Venus will not occur until December of 2117.

The first scientific observation of the celestial event occurred in 1639, when careful measurements helped determine the distance from the earth to the sun. Additional transits were observed in 1761, 1769, 1874, 1882 and 2004.

According to NASA, “The timing favors observers in the mid-Pacific where the sun is high overhead during the crossing. In the USA, the transit will be at its best around sunset.” NASA goes onto say that “creative photographers will have a field day imaging the swollen red sun ‘punctured’ by the circular disk of Venus.”
As with the recent solar eclipse of May 20 or any event that may spark an interest in looking at the sun, proper eye protection is crucial. NASA reminds anyone who may be interested in viewing to avoid looking at the sun. The agency suggests using a projection technique or a solar filter, such as No. 14 welders’ glass. It also suggests contacting local observatories or astronomy clubs to see about special programs that may be scheduled.

While not visible from every spot on Earth, the Transit of Venus will be visible from all seven continents.

NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) is going to be monitoring the skies and will release top-quality images.

The Los Angeles Times is reporting that solar glasses are a hot commodity as people prepare for what will likely be the last Transit of Venus that anyone alive today will witness.

The first observation of the Transit of Venus-- where the planet passes directly between the sun and the Earth-- was made by Salford stargazer William Crabtree in 1639.

The former Manchester Grammar School pupil's observation-- lauded by some as the birthplace f modern astronomy-- was made with a helioscope from his bedroom window and proved that planets orbit the sun and not the Earth.

To mark Crabtree's legacy, the room where he made the discovery was transformed to how it would have been in his time, using furnishings from Ordsall Hall.

Organisers linked up with NASA for the special event, which involved actors in period dress recreating Crabtree's moment of discovery.

Footage from the house at Lower Broughton Road-- which retains Tudor features from his day-- was beamed to millions of internet users from NASA's site.

Meanwhile, a giant projector on the side of the house was set up to screen images of the Transit from NASA's telescope in Hawaii, and guests at the event were able to take part in a question and answer session with the American space agency's experts.
