Rongorongo, the hieroglyphic script of Easter Island, has remained a mystery since its discovery. For over a hundred years, controversy has raged over the meaning and source of these enigmatic characters. Recently, it was reported that Dr. Steven Fischer had successfully deciphered this unique Oceanic "writing". To provide an opportunity to examine varying positions on the subject - an essay on Rongorongo by Steven Fischer, Ph.D. is hereby provided, with a corresponding critique and general overview offered by Jacques Guy, Ph.D.

Text C of the rongorongo corpus, also known as Mamari, is one of two dozen surviving rongorongo texts. It contains the Mamari Calendar.

Recto (side a), as traced by Barthel. The lines have been rearranged to reflect English reading order: Cr1 at top, Cr14 at bottom.

Verso (side b), as traced by Barthel: Cv1 at top, Cv14 at bottom.

Thomas Sylvester Barthel (January 4, 1923 Berlin – April 3, 1997 Tübingen) was a German ethnologist and epigrapher who is best known for cataloguing the undeciphered rongorongo script of Easter Island. --Wiki
