Presenting “a heart gripping story of braveness,” Agnes Sassoon shares her experience living through being sent to various concentration camps at 11 years old in her autobiography, “Agnes: How My Spirit Survived” (published by Lulu).

Captured during school hours in Budapest, the author was sent to Dachau. While there, Sassoon met Alex, a young Jewish boy, who she fell in love with. Sassoon even contracted typhoid at one point, but eventually recovered thanks to Alex. Surviving a death march across Germany, Sassoon was interred at Bergen-Belsen at the same time as Anne Frank. Through it all though, Agnes Sassoon insists on being positive and still believing in humanity. Although her parents survived the horrors of the war, her brother was shot.

Sassoon also recounts what happened after the war. She slowly returned to life under the care of the British mayor of Hannover and eventually found her parents in Budapest. The author then went to school in Prague before travelling to Israel in a boat full of refugees from Europe.

Agnes Sassoon wants to impress upon readers the seriousness of the thought “That something like the holocaust shall never happen again and that it is important to believe in humanity in spite of all the horrors that have happened in the world.”

An excerpt from the book reads as follows:
I began to look upon my life in the camp as a daily fight to survive. Each day I awoke was a miracle renewed. Malnutrition, lack of hygiene and inhuman living conditions were taking their toll and were decimating the ranks of the inmates.
