Migration of Deep Sea Fish

Editor, Earth News

Deep sea fish species found in the north Pacific Ocean have mysteriously been caught in the southwest Atlantic, on the other side of the world.

It is unclear how the animals, a giant rattail grenadier, pelagic eelpout and deep sea squid, travelled so far.

Their discovery 15,000km from their usual home raises the possibility that deep sea currents can transport animals from one polar region to another.

Details are published in the journal Deep Sea Research part I.

"These findings were completely unexpected," says Dr Alexander Arkhipkin of the Falkland Islands Fisheries Department, based in Stanley, on the Falkland Islands in the southwest Atlantic Ocean.

What is meant by unexpected in this regard is that scientific studies have so far made hasty conclusions.

May mga isda nga naturally found ra sa Africa nga recently nasubad sa Pilipinas like the giant sunfish. Siguro trend na ni karon sa aquatic species tungod sa "unusual heating or cooling" sa mga dagat tungod sa global warming. Those species have been here since the dawn of human civilization, kung karon pa ni sila madiskubrehe nga nahalagpot sa laing bahin sa kalibutan then dili siguro tubag ang ocean current sa nahitabong misteryo.

I agree ko nimo, Vince. Man has not fully understood or studied the animals of the deep. It really is like a whole new world underneath the ocean's waves. I can only imagine the different kinds of species that are living in the deep places of the earth, as in the Mariana Trench.
