Medical Discusison Board
« on: July 11, 2009, 05:09:01 AM »
This board will be placed for medical discussions, for anyone who has questions, an ailment, a question on a drug, or just to share information, opinion etc.

I'm looking for participation in this thread, to bring in a greater awareness in medical perspective; I need the help of our medical professionals that are members in this forum.

So Im calling on members like St. Agnes, Statesville, Ms Da Binsa, C2H4, Svetlana and all others that are members and are med professionals. I know that many of you guys are Registered Nurses, Pharmacists, Physicians, Physical Therapists, OT, etc~~

So please join me and others in this thread/board.

---

You can even share anything, even concerning your day at work, any problems, etc etc.

Ive thought about starting a thread just on this some time ago, but never thought about starting a join-group-discussion. So now I thought about it after reading and joining another medical forum, which had allied health personell sharing and inferring points of views. Sharing ideas, correct one another, etc.

Alright! Come, lets talk!

I have an interesting information that I would like to share as follows;
this is really an eye opener.

    WATER OR COKE?

We all know that water is important, but most people
have never seen it written down like this before.

       WATER
1. 75% of Americans are chronically water dehydrated.
2. In 13% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak
that it is mistaken for hunger.
3. Even mild dehydration  will slow down one's metabolism
     as much as 3%.
4. One glass of water will shut down  midnight hunger pangs
for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of
     Washington study.
5. Lack of water, the #1 cause of daytime fatigue.
6. Research indicates that 8-10 glasses  of water a day
could ease  back and joint pain up to 80% of sufferers.
7. A mere 2% drop in body water can  trigger fizzy  short-term
memory loss, trouble and difficulty  focusing on a printed page.
8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon
cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer
by 79%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder
     cancer.

And now the properties and luxury of Coke:
Subject: Before You Reach For That Coke

  Coke--Facto-Cide
Presented on behalf of your Health and Wellness!
No wonder Coke tastes s-o-o-o good:
1. In many states  in the U.S.A the highway patrol
carries 2 gallons of Coke in the trunk to remove blood
from the highway after a car accident.
2. Put a T-bone steak in a bowl of Coke, it will be gone in 2 days.
3. To clean a toilet: pour a can of Coca-Cola  into the toilet
bowl and let the "real thing" sit for an hour, then flush
clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from
     vitreous china.
4. To remove rust spots from chrome  bumpers: Rub the
bumper  with a crumpled-up pieces of Reynolds wrap
     aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola.
5. To clean corrosion from a car battery terminals: Pour
Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away corrosion.
6. To loosen a rusted bolt: Apply a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola
to the rusted bolt for several minutes.
7. To remove grease from clothes : Empty a can of Coke into
a load of greasy clothes, add detergent and run through
a regular cycle. Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains.
It will also clean road haze from windshields.

For your Coke info:
1. The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric.
Its pH is 2.8. It will dissolve a nail in about 4 days
Phosphoric acid also leaches calcium from bones, a
major contributor to the increase in osteoporosis.
It is a fact that colas weaken bones.
2. To carry Coca-Cola serum (the Concentrate) the
commercial truck must use the hazardous material
placard signs reserved for highly corrosive materials.
3. The distributors of Coke have been using it to clean
engines of their trucks for over 20 years.

     Now the question is;
Would you like a Coke or a glass of pure water?
For your Health and Wellness!

Hehe, never good to drink too much coke because it can cause metabolic acidosis. As well as heavy carbonation.

Think about it this way lang.

Think to yourself, "What will happen if i drink alot of one drink?"

And then analyze the medical situation.

:::

1. Okay so person X^2 is sitting in his house and drinks a 2 liter bottle of Pepsi (lets say this guy is a caffeine junky, lol!)

2. Okay so person 2X^3 is sitting outside of her cubicle (she's an IT specialist ;) ) and drinks a 2 liter water gallon (she's thirsty, she was recalibrating and rehydrating herself--trying to restore her electrolytes after binge drinking the night before with her college buddies).

---

So let's analyze the scenarios we've been given ;)

Scenario 1: Mr. X^2 clearly isn't wise. Drinking a 2 liter bottle of pepsi with an empty stomach will not only expose the stomach to heavy concentration of acidic pH. What's the result of this if kept in a chronic state? Peptic Ulcers, folks. Burns right through your mucosal lining of the stomach.

Scenario 2: Ms 2X^3 is merely restoring water balance (she was hypovolemic, as indicated), so the intake of 2 gallons of water is warranted to maintain fluid homeostasis. Water (H2O) is a pure liquid. Not acidic, and not too basic. Neutral. Its effect on the GIT system is positive: it cleanses the stomach, and expels any fecal matter in the DJI region to the large intestinal region, then out through the anal sphincter. To your local handy dandy toilet. lol

Clinical and Critical difference here:
Case 1 --> leads to metabolic acidosis as well as peptic-gastric ulcers. As well as neurologically speaking, caffeine binging can lead to self induced tachycardia--> if patient was a CHD patient or  CVD patient, is heavily contraindicated.

Case 2 --> Liquid therapy. In this case the water intake was positive. Since she was hypovolemic. Had she been hypervolemic, or was a CHD patient: clinical features of periopheral edema, fluid retention due to CRF (chronic renal failure), would be detrimental. In that case excessive water intake would be contraindicated due to the already increased pre-load, and increased afterload--and therefore furtheremore increae the burden of the O2-starved heart (which in that case would be suffering from cardiomegaly)

hehehe.

Excellent explanation, mora man kog nabalik pagka student,
anyway, the medical field is a continuous process of learning
in which we need in the daily care  given to the patients.

Nurses in general are really neglectful in taking care of  their
kidneys.  When we are busy, we just keep going and
push  till  our job is done. We forget to drink nor to take
a bathroom break. Well, patients comes first as  they say.
I manage  to find time though to sip some water, to refuel
  and boost my energy.

I was told about a joke as follows;
A young woman was found unconscious on the side
of the road possibly being mugged or just passed out.
The ambulance personnel assessed her, no ID found.
Personnel # 1 said, "I'm know who this woman is"
Personnel # 2 asked, " Who is she?"
Personnel # 1 said, " She is a nurse, her bladder is very
distended and firm to the touch"
 :D

Today was hilarious, simply hilarious.

My friend Tom did his presentation on FAD (alzheimer's) on our weekly Journal of Medicine Association--AMSA Chapter. AMSA stands for American Medical Student's Association.
There was a considerable number of folks that attended today's lecture: 60-80 or so at least. Tom presented well, introducing the etiology of the diseae, the clinical symtpoms, possible genetic causes, treatment, diagnosis etc. the whole kabootle. ;)

So i told him i'd film the presentation. But what i didnt tell him was that id film also a pre-presentation intro. Taken 1 hour before his presentation. lol!

Guys will be guys, i guess. Hahahaha~

I wanted to share lang:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYD-QcwqoTk
