Libas, scientific 𝘚𝘱𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘴 𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘢, is a medium-to-tall tree distributed widely through the Philippines and can be found particularly in the forests of Bataan in Central Luzon. It is a sun-loving species and can reach a height of more than 25 meters. It has a smooth, grey and reddish-brown bark, and a green and yellow fruit that is edible but sour.
Libas fruit can be made into jellies and preserves, but may also be eaten raw. They are also fed to pigs, which led to the name “hog plum.” The young leaves of S. pinnata are also edible, which are used as a souring agent in dishes like sinigang. The bark, young leaves and the fruit of the libas also have medicinal properties and are used in the treatment of wounds, sores and burns.
Help us save these trees to keep them #wildandalive. Contact your nearest DENR Office to report any illegal forest activities and to know more information on how you can help in our country’s reforestation programs.
