Empathy and sympathy are sometimes confused. Sympathy is characterized by feeling sorry for people. This can make them feel pitiful, helpless, and hopeless. Empathy, on the other hand, gives people the message that their feelings can be understood and accepted, which is empowering rather than demeaning.
