Dostarlimab, an experimental cancer drug, appears to have cured every patient in its clinical trial in the US.
After taking Dostarlimab for six months, the 12 patients with rectal cancer entered remission, according to a study in The New England Journal of Medicine.
After the patients stopped the medication, the cancer had vanished, undetectable by physical exam, endoscopy, PET or MRI scans.
Unlike chemo drugs, there were no significant side-effects reported.
“This is the first time this has happened in the history of cancer,” said oncologist Dr. Luis Diaz, the paper's lead author.
Dostarlimab unmasks cancer cells so that the immune system can identify and destroy them.
