According to a report by the United Nations, climate change and biodiversity loss threaten progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as they are mutually reinforcing.

The report states that achieving human well-being and eradicating poverty for all of the Earth’s people—expected to number eight and a half billion by 2030—depends on protecting and restoring nature.

The report also shows that biodiversity loss is undermining progress on 80% of the SDGs.

Biodiversity loss and climate change are both driven by human economic activities and mutually reinforce each other.

Neither will be successfully resolved unless both are tackled together.

A study published in Nature shows that biodiversity buffers against climate extremes and their removal increases risks.

Biodiversity forms the web of life that we depend on for so many things – food, water, medicine, a stable climate, economic growth, among others. Over half of global GDP is dependent on nature.
