There are two forms of child abuse:

1) Physical abuse and

2) Sexual abuse

Physical abuse

Evidence: healed fractures on x-ray, cigarette burns, subdural hematomas, multiple bruises, retinal hemorrhage, or detachment

Abuser: Usually female and the primary caregiver

Epidemiology: ~ 3,000 deaths/ year in the United States

Sexual abuse

Evidence: Genital/ anal trauma, STDs, recurrent UTI (urinary tract infection)

Abuser: Known to victim, usually male

Epidemiology: Peak incidence 9 - 12 years of age
