Researchers at Rice University have pioneered a technique that uses vibrating dye molecules, triggered by near-infrared light, to physically tear apart cancer cells at incredible speed. These so-called “molecular jackhammers” work a million times faster than earlier molecular machines, shattering tumor cells with precision.
In early animal trials, mice with melanoma showed remarkable recovery, with half becoming completely cancer-free. Because the method doesn’t rely on chemical drugs, it sidesteps the issue of treatment resistance and minimizes harmful side effects — offering hope for a safer, more effective alternative to conventional cancer therapies.
