Bohol wildlife 'saw' the quake coming, caretakers say

It's a phenomenon that has puzzled observers for a long time: How is it that animals seem to know when an earthquake is coming?

Experts and caretakers say that Bohol's wildlife, particularly its famous and seemingly fragile tarsiers, may have been fazed but escaped largely unharmed by the devastating quake that hit the island on October 15.

“Generally, unless masira ‘yung habitat nila ‘pag may earthquake, they’d be fine. Alam nila pag may earthquake. They know what to do,” said Dr. Arvin Diesmos, chief herpetologist of the National Museum.

“Yung mga nasa wild, wala naman sa kanila (ang earthquake). May chance sila na maka-escape from one tree to another,” said Dr. Stephen Toledo, officer-in-charge of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Wildlife Bureau.

Strange behavior before the quake

The tarsiers in the Philippine Tarsier Sactuary, for instance, were unharmed, said Joannie Mary Cabillo, Program Manager of the Philippine Tarsier Foundation.

“They were unusually active a day before the earthquake. Palipat-lipat sila ng puno,” she said in a phone interview with GMA News Online.

Of the 300 to 500 tarsiers in the sanctuary, only five to 10 were allowed to be viewed by the tourists. As of now, only three to five are present.

“Hinahanap pa namin ‘yung iba. Nagtatago pa kasi sila,” Cabillo said.

The tarsiers were believed to have relocated and have gone to safer ground before the earthquake hit.

The workers manning the sanctuary weren’t as fortunate.

The sanctuary had to close because the earthquake ruined their houses. It opened Thursday to allow tourists to see the famed endangered species.

“It was the first time we encountered such strong earthquake and were able to observe them a day before the 7.2-magnitude earthquake na restless po sila,” she said.

Animals have a ‘sixth sense’?

Caballo said that they are not certain if the tarsiers really did ‘predict’ that the earthquake was coming because it is not scientifically proven.

But it is believed that they have a natural tendency to know where to go and what to do in the event of a natural disaster.

Similar odd behavior was observed before a tsunami hit Sri Lanka and India in 2005.

"Wild and domestic animals seemed to know what was about to happen and fled to safety," a report said.

Eyewitness accounts include elephants screaming and running for higher ground, dogs refusing to go outdoors, flamingos abandoning their low-lying breeding areas, and zoo animals rushing into their shelters that could not be enticed to come back out.

The belief that animals can ‘sense’ an impending earthquake or tsunami has been around for centuries.

“Wildlife experts believe animals' more acute hearing and other senses might enable them to hear or feel the Earth's vibration, tipping them off to approaching disaster long before humans realize what's going on,” the report said.

The beauty of Bohol

Bohol’s mountainous interior is home to rare flora and fauna, including the famed Philippine Tarsiers.

About 65-140 million years ago, Bohol was underwater except for some parts such as Mt. Malibalibod and the terrains of Alicia.

Over time, the land we call Bohol slowly surfaced. The skeletons of the coral reefs slowly became limestone, the most abundant mineral in the surface of Bohol.

These were used to make the colonial churches ruined by the earthquake.

Bohol is not as earthquake prone as other areas in the country.

No one thought that its beautiful surface would shake as hard as it did, taking hundreds of lives and injuring many more.  — TJD, GMA News
