Does someone as wealthy as Bill Gates or Jeff Bezos help support their whole extended family e.g. aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.?

Not in any major way. They do not share even a single percentage with their extended family, while nuclear family (mostly kids) get to enjoy in the wealth — but for people like Gates, he states he will only leave his children with something like $50M each.

Larry Ellison of Oracle is one of the richest, and also one of the individuals famously not on The Giving Pledge. Jeff Bezos is also missing. Ellison collects a lot of Japanese historical artifacts, sometimes displaying them for limited times at art museums — he is able to fill entire sections, and also collects property — domestic and international.

Ellison resides in Woodside, close to work in Northern California. His Woodside home is a feudal Japanese-styled property which sports a Zen garden and a surrounding moat that cost $200M to construct. He has something like 30–40 mansions in Southern California alone. He just bought his 12th Malibu oceanfront property from Joel Silver for $38M in cash this month (July 2018). He also invested enough money into his daughter’s enterprise, ANNAPURNA PICTURES, for it to be successful. Under Megan Ellison’s lead, they have produced films such as Lawless, Killing Them Softly, Zero Dark Thirty, and American Hustle. However, dropping $300M on Hawaiian islands like the one he bought in 2012, called Lanai, doesn’t exactly lend much credo regarding his generosity to extended family, or strangers for that matter.

Warren Buffett, “Oracle of Omaha,” still lives in the same ranch farmhouse he has had since he started out. He had only ever indulged on one or two private jets. In a documentary about wealth by Jamie Johnson of the S.C. Johnson & Johnson family legacy, a direct heir who inherited $600M on his 18th birthday, Buffett’s granddaughter was interviewed. She was living in a city apartment, sporting a more casual hippie look. She told Jamie that even though her grandfather is the second richest person in the world, she had never received one cent. Buffett, when he learned of the interview, disowned her immediately.

Statistics reportedly show that people who make the least and fall within the definitions of poverty usually contribute larger portions of their salaries to charities or helping others directly. The wealthy donate far less percentage-wise, and the largesse of these contributions usually benefit museums, hospitals, and universities.

For some reason, wealthy people actually don’t like to share their money, or talk about it. Regarding me, I am perhaps too much of an open book. And I have helped with numerous people’s retirement accounts directly, from Genentech to Google (for free!). I could care less about how much you make or how many homes you have. It’s whether or not you are able to share and learn, so that you can be in a better position tomorrow than today.
