Petition seeks to name typhoons after corrupt officials

How can public officials found to have misused government funds be shamed? It’s easy, netizens say: just name typhoons after them.
 
A petition posted via online platform Change.org, said typhoons “can’t compete with them (corrupt officials) for destruction of life and property.”
 
“Let this be a constant reminder of how our hard-earned money has been stolen or misspent by corrupt politicians,” the petition posted by Ismael Tomelden said.
 
The online campaign comes as the Senate Blue Ribbon committee probes an alleged P10-billion pork barrel scandal involving five senators and 23 congressmen.
 
The lawmakers are being accused of funneling cash from their Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) to nonexistent non-government organizations.

The scandal, which has sparked widespread anger, prodded President Benigno Aquino III to call for the abolition of PDAF.
 
It has also led to a massive National Heroes Day protest at the Luneta Park, with thousands pushing for the abolition of the pork barrel system.
 
Asking the state weather bureau Pagasa to name typhoons after corrupt politicians is “very appropriate,” Sean Sanchez of Bulacan, the first to sign the petition said.
 
Marty Li of Manila agreed, adding: “Para mapahiya ang mga kurakot! Kung may hiya pang natitira sa kanila (So the corrupt will be shamed, if they still have shame).”
 
“It’s time we start naming those damned typhoons that ruin our land [after those who] ruin our lives for their betterment,” Aliz Reyes of Manila said in the petition.

“Maliit na bagay ito but may dating (A small move that has impact),” is how petitioner Elizabeth Rendon of Manila described the move.
At present, the Pagasa system uses a list of about 140 names chosen from submissions during a public contest in 2001. There are four sets of some 35 names each.
 
The weather bureau also decommissions names of typhoons that caused massive destruction, particularly those that inflicted damages that exceeded P1 billion.
 
Some Filipinos who signed the petition to name storms after corrupt politicians, however, raised concerns over the proposal’s implementation.
 
Quezon City resident Alfred Pavia said it would be an “opportunity for educating younger, apathy-leaning generations about our country's horrific past.”
 
This, even as he noted that it may be “politically challenging at best to implement as it has undertones of potential libel lawsuits.”

Jonathan Joson of Muntinlupa, meanwhile, said it “might backfire during elections though when some names are top of mind because of media exposure.”
 
Some have meanwhile found more reasons to use the new naming sytem. “Kasi eventually, dapat na silang umalis (Because eventually, they have to go,” Australia-based Paz Habersatt said.
 
Other petitioners have also floated some of the first names that must be used, should Pagasa agree to the proposal.
 
Signing the petition, Reynaldo Barretto of Pasig City said, “[L]et’s start start with typhoon PNoy! Number 1 kurakoter!” Aquino has drawn flak for refusing to abolish his Presidential Social Fund.
 
James Chin of Quezon City meanwhile said, “Una na dito si Makoy?” referring to former strongman Ferdinand Marcos, who is said to have plundered billions.
