Beauties take up cudgels for Megan Young

October 2, 2013

MEGAN Young

MANILA, Philippines—Don’t mess with a beauty queen from the Philippines.

Former beauty titlists and Miss World Philippines officials are rushing to the defense of Megan Young, the Filipino Miss World 2013 title winner who has come under attack from online haters.

On Sunday, a certain Facebook user (Devina DeDiva) criticized Young’s Miss World victory, dismissing the Philippines as a country of maids.

The Facebook user said: “Miss Philippines is Miss World? What a joke? I didn’t know those maids have anything else in them. Hahaha.”

The post has since been taken down from the social networking site. Inquirer tried to reach that Facebook user, who is alleged to be based in Singapore and studied at Manchester University, for comment but has not received a reply at press time.

Soon after the racial slur went online, a hate page attacking the Facebook user was put up on Tuesday, gaining 11,068 “likes” in a matter of hours.

Scriptwriter-actress Bibeth Orteza asked on Facebook: “But is DeDiva even her real name? Is that a surname typical from that part of the world…a cowardly pseudonym…or a play on ‘diva?’”

Filipino beauty queens have come to Young’s defense against the Facebook hater and other bashers.

Gemma Cruz-Araneta, Miss International 1964, asked pointedly: “What’s wrong with being a maid? Is that a crime?”

Melanie Marquez, Miss International 1979, told the Inquirer: “To all her detractors, bless your hearts. That’s all I can say. I am proud of and grateful for Megan’s simplicity and golden heart.”

Jennifer Cortes, Binibining Pilipinas-Universe 1978, said: “Seems the Philippines has become a powerhouse (in the pageant scene). Lots of people are getting envious. Sad about the personal attacks, but we are a country of beautiful people.”

Miriam Quiambao, Miss Universe first runnerup 1999, quipped: “I have nothing to say (to those critics). Let Megan show the world how great she is as a Filipino woman. Meanwhile, let’s all do our best to uplift our country by giving nobility to our jobs…wherever we are. This is a call for everyone to step up and show the world that we are kind, God-fearing people.”

Fashion model and Miss Visayas-RP 1976 Bessie Badilla quipped: “They are just sore losers. We shouldn’t waste our time on them. Let us enjoy Megan’s victory and ignore those who do not wish to celebrate with us.”

Philippines, Brazil And Venezuela: Three Countries To Win The Big Four International Beauty Pageants

By Riza Ornos
September 30, 2013

There are hundreds of beauty pageants held every year around the globe but out of these pageants there are only 4 that are considered the most prestigious; Miss World (1951), Miss Universe (1952), Miss International (1960) and Miss Earth (2001).

Miss World 2013

Run by Miss Universe Organization, Miss Universe was founded in 1952 by Pacific Mills, a clothing company based in California. Before it was acquired by Donald Trump, the pageant is part of Kayser-Roth and then Gulf+Western Industries.

Miss World is a London-based pageant created by Eric Morley in 1951, making it the oldest surving international beauty contest in the world. Since Eric Morley's death in 2000, his wife Julia Morley is now the chairman of Miss World Organisation.

The pageant that is not based on looks alone, Miss International winners are expected to serve as "Ambassadors of Peace and Beauty." The ultimate goal of Miss International is to promote world peace, goodwill and understanding.

Known as a non-profit organization, Miss Earth Foundation aims to increase the level of awareness on current environmental issues. Miss Earth is organized annually by Manila-based Carousel Productions and the only major global pageant that promotes the care and preservation for the planet's environment and ecology.

Known  as the Big Four International beauty pageant, these four contests are considered to be the most coveted titles by all beauty titlists, with Miss Universe and Miss World, the two pageants that most countries considered to be the most important. So here are the countries who successfully won the big four as of September 2013.

Brazil

Known for its exotic beauty, grace and elegance; Brazil is the first country to win all four pageants, the latest is when they won Miss Earth in 2004. The largest country in both South America and Latin America; Brazil has won two Miss Universe crowns (1963, 1968), one Miss World crown (1971), two Miss Earth crowns (2004, 2009) and one Miss International crown (1968).

Philippines

The only Asian country to bag the "Big Four," the Philippines is the third and the most recent country to join the ranks of Brazil and Venezuela. Thanks to Megan Young who won the Miss World 2013, the Philippines has completed the four major beauty pageants with two Miss Universe crowns (1969, 1972), four Miss International crowns (1964, 1970, 1979, 2005) and one Miss Earth crown (2008).

[Megan] Young is the first Filipino candidate to win in the 63-year-old UK-based pageant. With this triumph, the country scored a rare feat— winning in five major beauty contests: World (once), Universe (twice) International (four times), Earth (once) and Supranational (once).

According to reports, this achievement belongs solely to the Philippines. Brazil and Venezuela have yet to win Miss Supranational, which Filipino Mutya Johanna Datul won last month.
