Snack Bar of Puto Maya and Tsokolate

Your  friendly neighborhood snack bar or refreshment parlor will attest to this. Where before these snack outlets were mere hole in the wall affair in public markets or in the dark alleys of makeshift shanties in population centers, now an enterprising owner raises the business to a higher level although the same target market is still the apple of her eyes. This is not to say however, that this snack parlor people used to patronize, has lost its luster where it usually belongs.

For its long line of followers, they are still doing brisk business in the same, old and familiar venues.

The market being zeroed in by the owner of La Kars Snack Bar remains the same –the loyal patrons of the lowly puto maya and tsokolate found in street corners and public markets.

The young entrepreneur Karen Jude Jipos is bullish that someday she will have her hands full in catering to the daily needs of puto maya and tsokolate fans.

What makes her snack staple a cut above the rest is the setting which she purposely  chose in order to give maximum satisfaction to her loyal clients.

She inherited the business from her mother Tata Jipos who used to operate a refreshment parlor inside the defunct Torralba Private Market several years back. The snack outlet of old was patronized by the who’s who in Tagbilaran whose afternoon sorties would not be complete without the ubiquitous puto maya and tsokolate.

In the case of the new establishment, Karen is looking forward that her snack will become an afternoon delight to those who are looking for a different ambience the moment the urge to eat rushes in.

Tucked in a concrete structure along J. A Clarin St. just beside the main entrance of the Holy Name University, the La Kar’s is slowly gaining adherents from students of the nearby school.

Fully air-conditioned, the  establishment serves the same major snack menu in a setting qualified as high end in the annals of the snack business.

From the leather chairs to the panelling of the  snack bar’s interiors, there is no mistaking the owner’s flair for minimalist details. One component of the snack business is the presence of two mini-conference rooms also fully air-conditioned.

But make no mistake about the classy look of the establishment. The price of its afternoon menu is just slightly  higher than any snacks of the same kind found in public markets and neighborhood nooks.

Ms. Jipos, a junior in  hotel and restaurant management is the daughter of. Mr. and Mrs. Oscar and Tata Jipos, whose core business is lending and food supplement distribution.

Since, Karen, the eldest, is attracted to culinary art, the Jipos couple did not lose time to convince her to venture into the snack business, of course, totally different from the rest, because she is doing it in style.
