NegOr LGUs vigilant vs profiteering

Dumaguete City (29 June 2005) -- The 15 Centers for Consumers' Welfare in some local government units in Negros Oriental remain vigilant against profiteering among traders in the province.
According to Dr. Angeline Gonzales, Trade and Industry Regulatory Division Chief at the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) here, the Centers for Consumers' Welfare are constantly monitoring prices of basic necessities and prime commodities in their areas.
Interior and Local Government Secretary Angelo Reyes recently reiterated his call to local government units to guard against profiteers and monitor prices of basic commodities at the LGU level.
Gonzales said that based on reports from the centers, profiteering is not rampant in the province because the traders here are competitive.
The traders have reportedly said that if they hike up their prices, consumers refuse to buy from them, disclosed Gonzales.
So far, only 15 LGUs have set up their own centers, namely: Basay, Bayawan City, Sta.Catalina, Siaton, Zamboanguita, Dauin, Valencia, Dumaguete City, Sibulan, Tanjay City, Bais City, Mabinay, Ayungon, Guihulngan, and Canlaon City.
A center will soon be set up in Jimalalud.
Gonzales said the LGU personnel manning the centers also address consumer complaints and hand out business name application forms. (PIA)
