Millions of siblings and their friends and their families are expected to celebrate Siblings Day (SD) worldwide on April 10, 2020. It and the Siblings Day Foundation (SDF) were created by Claudia Evart, a native New Yorker, to honor and memorialize her only siblings, Alan and Lisette. April 10, 2020 will be SD’s 23rd anniversary!
“We have had Mother’s Day and Father’s Day in the U.S. for more than 110 years. Now, at last, we are honoring our sisters and brothers,” Evart points out. “Siblings Day is already recognized in 49 states by gubernatorial proclamations. The 50th state of California is pending. Presidents Obama, Bush and Clinton also recognized the day by issuing a Presidential Message during their terms in office.”
“All siblings should be appreciated, honored and celebrated on April 10 each year and have a day to call their own,” says Evart.
“During this difficult time, we need to be in touch with our siblings more than ever and the use of modern technology makes it easy to reach out to them including Facebook messenger, Zoom, Skype and FaceTime. An overwhelming number of Facebook and Instagram users continue to post childhood photos or a memory of them and their sibling on Social Media”, Evart says.
Over the years, SD has been celebrated with activities across the U.S., at the Bronx Zoo in New York City, the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago, The Children’s Inn at NIH in Maryland, St. Jude’s Ranch for Children in Nevada, Seattle Children’s Museum, and at other museums, as well as at numerous university and college campuses.
Several sibling support groups nationwide sponsor annual events celebrating siblings with disabilities and special needs, seriously ill or those separated in foster care. “These are siblings who may have a stronger bond due to their special and challenging relationships,” and “the caregivers of special needs siblings are heroes”, Evart says.
For our siblings who have passed, light a candle in memory of them on Siblings Day, April 10th. Honor, appreciate and cherish relationships with your brothers & sisters. Friends may come and go but siblings are forever.
