WESTMINSTER, MD. (PRWEB) OCTOBER 31, 2019
On Saturday evening, October 26, 2019, over 120 community members gathered at the South Carroll Swim Club to attend Together We Own Its’ First Annual Bull & Oyster Roast. Proceeds from the event will benefit the organization’s campaign to build a Community School and Residence in Carroll County for children and families impacted by poverty, trauma and mental illness.
“We had a lot of amazing people come together to make the event great,” said Hannah Boguski, Together We Own Its’ Director of Community Engagement and Outreach. “There was an opportunity for networking and more people are now aware of our impact in the community. It was a successful night for us!”
“This was our first large fundraising event,” said Katie Kirby, Together We Own Its’ Executive Director. “Our theme this year was ‘nothing changes if nothing changes’ and this event gave us the platform to share how we plan to step up and be the change for our community.”
Together We Own Its’ staff and volunteers spent the past three years discovering where the gap in services lie. Sitting on several committees, working with teams of professionals and building relationships with families, they’ve seen first-hand an immense amount of pain and heartbreak experienced by its neighbors. The individuals they serve are impacted by several risk factors and are more likely to end up in foster care, become substance dependent and engage in risky or criminal behavior.
Over the next few years, Together We Own It will be working hard to acquire land, develop programming and collaborate with local organizations so that together, they can provide a more integrated network of care for families in Carroll County, Maryland. Their Community School will serve children with behavioral needs and operate as a support system for county schools and the residence will provide families with respite or emergency housing for youth.
“This fundraiser exemplified the mission and dedication of Together We Own It. Community members, leaders, families, and friends rallied around a cause that reaches, assists, and impacts so many local families and children,” said Kimberly Gossert, Together We Own It Board Member who volunteered during the event selling raffle tickets. “Together We Own It has continually strived to bring the community together and make change, and the Bull and Oyster Roast magnified this mission and encouraged continued support in the days, weeks, months, and years to come.
The funds raised from this year’s Bull and Oyster Roast will go towards the organization’s ‘Project Launch’ campaign; which will be used to break ground on their Community School and Residential campus.
“I really enjoyed getting to know the staff and volunteers of Together We Own It at the Bull and Oyster Roast,” said attendee Heather Mahler. Ms. Mahler is the Program Director at the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore and travelled all the way from Salisbury, Maryland to attend this event. Heather has been a mentor for Katie ever since she completed her senior internship with the Foundation during her undergraduate career at Salisbury University. “This small but mighty nonprofit empowers kids to engage, inspire and motivate one another. Their passion and experience aligns perfectly with the needs of youth in rural Maryland.”
“This event was so much fun for us because we were able to share the mission of Together We Own It with so many new people,” said Katie Kirby. “Many people that started the evening as strangers, left feeling connected to our cause.”
ABOUT TOGETHER WE OWN IT
Together We Own It was initially founded to serve the needs of one Maryland child. Her family was evicted from their home, she was bullied in school and she had failed second grade. After one year enrolled in Together We Own Its’ programs, this young lady not only gained confidence, but she began to excel in school. Additionally, the family received needed services as well.
Today, Together We Own It serves over 500 children across the state of Maryland; primarily in Carroll and Wicomico County. We strive to foster a sense of connection between youth and their community by connecting people and resources, mentoring, educational enrichment, and recreational empowerment. Together We Own It’s programs serve youth ages 0-18 and their families.
