The Poverty of our century
« on: January 08, 2008, 07:42:05 AM »
The poverty of our century is unlike that of any other. It is not, as poverty was before, the result of natural scarcity, but of a set of priorities imposed upon the rest of the world by the rich. Consequently, the modern poor are not pitied but written off as trash. The twentieth-century consumer economy has produced the first culture for which a beggar is a reminder of nothing. - John Berger

For me, the greatest poverty of our time is also the doom of our time. The growing secularist society that we live in and the retreat from religious conviction equates to poverty, in my opinion. Too many of our youth commit suicide by the thousands due to the alienation of family members, due to the decreasing religious influence in our lives. There needs to be an upswing to claim that umbilical cord.

For there is only so much monetary and material goods can provide, the spirit of a man can not be satiated by food, sex, money, riches. The spirit, which is eternal, can only be satiated by God and his Grace. And if deprived of that Love, the spirit will deteriorate.

What does it mean to be poor? To lack riches; to lack something. Yes. I agree. The lacking of God in our daily lives. That is what it means to be poor.
