I have been thinking about this old saying that I came across in one of the articles I read today. I don't know what got me to keep thinking about this. I guess I am confused by the meaning of this saying. I kind of have a feeling but it's not quite hitting the nail right on head, so to speak.

Don't examine a gift too closely! You can tell a horseâ€™s age by looking at its teeth, which is why people 'looked a horse in the mouth'.
