Foundation announces grant to fund key initiatives to support COVID-19 global research programs

The i2b2 tranSMART Foundation, a global non-profit open-source foundation advancing the development of clinical and translational research through effective collaboration, has been awarded a grant to support the initial deployment of three key initiatives to advance COVID-19 research.
Professor Isaac Kohane, Chairman of the Department of BioMedical Informatics at Harvard Medical School and Chairman of the i2b2 tranSMART Foundation Board of Directors, said, “This significant grant marks a milestone for the Foundation as it joins the global community in offering significant new tools for the research community in their quest to find methods to treat patients and prevent future infections of the COVID-19 virus.”
The global COVID-19 research initiatives are focused on providing the following capabilities:

tranSMART for Genomics Data and Analysis - within the next month, a public version of the tranSMART Platform v19 will be made available with existing public datasets of COVID-19, SARS and MERS genomics data. Research groups around the world will be invited to add their datasets. This project is a collaboration with Axiomedix. In making this data accessible across the global research community, researchers can directly examine previous studies and adjust and improve their planned studies and more quickly complete and evaluate their new findings. This genomic data and analysis will help to speed the path to further understand the virus, identifying better diagnoses and treatment and ultimately lead to more effective vaccines.

Searchable online profiles of researchers around the world studying COVID-19 - Since January, more than 6,000 journal articles from nearly 25,000 authors have been published about COVID-19. The Foundation will quickly deploy a website that contains searchable online profiles of every researcher worldwide and visualizations showing how they are connected using “Profiles,” an open source program that creates a rapid research-ready portal. Researchers across the world can identify scientists conducting similar and complementary work and to potentially share results for more efficient and faster time to impact.

Harnessing the combined power of i2b2 and tranSMART query and analysis of clinical and genomics data - The organizations will work to improve the interoperability of i2b2 and tranSMART and streamline the installation process to help institutions join a growing community of sites that are leveraging their EHR and genomic data for COVID-19 research. This project, when completed, will offer the full power of i2b2 and tranSMART to be used by research groups to provide a significantly expanded suite of tools and analyses. This is the first step in realizing the vision that led to the merger of the i2b2 and tranSMART Foundation in 2017.

The funding for these projects was donated by Dell Technologies, in line with the company’s focus on supporting those working to treat and contain COVID-19 around the world.
“These projects will each have a significant impact for the research teams who are working on COVID-19,” said Diane Keogh, Executive Director of the i2b2 tranSMART Foundation. “We have been planning these projects but have not had sufficient funding to date. We can now deliver the first phases of all three within this year and integrated together they will not only help ongoing COVID-19 research projects but will help the research community in the future.”

Patients currently enrolled in ongoing clinical trials for medical conditions other than COVID-19 report experiencing changes as a result of the pandemic such as telemedicine, study medication delivered to their homes, and the use of smartphone apps.

The recent public healthcare crisis has generated an increasing amount of attention on the topic of clinical research. In light of this, CISCRP conducted a brief survey among the public and patients in April 2020 to assess the impact of the pandemic on clinical research perceptions and experiences. The final report can be accessed here.
Five hundred diverse individuals in the United States and a few select countries in Europe (United Kingdom, France, Germany and Italy) completed the survey. Eighteen percent of the respondents have clinical trial experience. Of those who have participated in clinical research, more than half (56%) are currently enrolled in a clinical trial for COVID-19. Where appropriate, comparisons were made to the baseline 2019 Perceptions & Insights Study, a biennial large-scale global analysis of public and patient views of and experiences with clinical research to identify any notable differences.
Overall, awareness of clinical trials remains low – as 58% had not heard of a COVID-19 clinical research study recently.
“Interestingly, among the minority that had recently heard of a COVID-19 clinical research study in the recruitment phase, we learned that a higher proportion (40%) of Europeans are aware than Americans (34%),” said Annick de Bruin, Director, Research Services. “This contrasts with our larger baseline 2019 Perceptions & Insights Study where we found that North Americans are more likely to be aware of a current clinical trial in general than any other region. This may partially be due to the fact that the crisis evolved earlier in Europe.”
Misconceptions about the clinical research development process persist. Most (60%) think a treatment or vaccine for the virus will be developed in less than one year. Once developed, the majority (64%) think it will be less than a year before people can start receiving it.
Patients currently enrolled in ongoing clinical trials for conditions other than COVID-19 report experiencing changes as a result of the pandemic such as telemedicine, study medication delivered to their homes, and the use of smartphone apps. Twenty-six percent report a suspension of the clinical research study in which they were enrolled and 11% report a reduced number of in-person clinic visits.
Top motivators for participating in a COVID-19 clinical research study include altruistic reasons with 46% mentioning ‘to help others who are suffering’ and 46% mentioning ‘to advance science and the treatment of COVID-19.’ These motivations are in line with findings from the larger baseline 2019 Perceptions & Insights Study.

Design for Environmental Nature Center and Pre-school receives COTEemoji2400 - Show Posts - m_marie06 Top Ten Award, the industry’s most prestigious award for environmentally sensitive, high-performance design

Irvine-based integrated design firm LPA has received a national COTE Top Ten award from the American Institute of Architects, the industry’s highest award for sustainable design, for the design of the Environmental Nature Center and Pre-school on a 5-acre campus in Newport Beach, California, the AIA announced today.
The AIA also awarded the two LEED Platinum, net-zero projects with the COTE Top Ten Plus designation, which recognizes projects that have already demonstrated “exemplary performance and generated post-occupancy lessons.” The Environmental Nature Center (ENC) was the only one of the projects honored to receive the Top Ten Plus designation.
The COTE awards recognize 10 innovative projects each year for “integration of design excellence with environmental performance.” Projects are evaluated on 10 distinct parameters, ranging from energy strategies and water conservation to resiliency and wellness.
The Environmental Nature Center design “is special in that it is a pre-school that embodies many environmental lessons,” the AIA jurors wrote. “It introduces kids to responsible sustainability at a young age and is a place where people will want to send their children.”
An early adopter of sustainable design, last year LPA was the largest firm in the country to surpass the AIA 2030 Commitment target of a 70 percent energy use reduction in new buildings. LPA has designed one of the largest portfolios of LEED Platinum and Gold projects in the country.
“For LPA, COTE represents the highest honor because it focuses on actual performance,” LPA President Dan Heinfeld says. “We’ve always connected performance and design excellence as one of our core values.”
The 9,000-square-foot LPA-designed Nature Center, opened in 2008 as the first LEED Platinum building in the region, provides environmental education through hands-on experiences with nature. Last September the ENC added a 10,380-square-foot pre-school, designed to deliver nature-based education for children ages 2½ to 5 through a series of intuitive indoor-outdoor play and education environments.
Energy efficiency and water conservation are baked into every element of the facility. The butterfly-shaped roof opens the classrooms to natural light and supports a 32KW array of photovoltaic panels, which are designed to provide 105 percent of the net energy for the pre-school’s electrical needs. Natural ventilation, low-energy ceiling fans and a radiant floor heating system eliminated the need for traditional HVAC systems. Rainwater is treated as an educational tool, where water is channeled through rock basins and bioswales, and naturally treated and clarified by plant materials.
“It was extremely important for the design to mirror our sensibilities on sustainability and energy efficiency,” said Bo Glover, executive director of the ENC. “Working with LPA gave us a unique opportunity to design a nature-based pre-school from the ground up.”
The pre-school was developed through LPA’s unique integrated design process which included the firm’s architects, landscape architects and interior designers, taking a holistic approach to addressing the educational spaces, as well as energy and water conservation. Learning spaces throughout the facility are designed to spark creativity, cooperative learning and imagination.
“We were able to work as a unit with educators, the community and ENC leaders to develop the idea of learning through nature in a facility that reflected the group’s core mission,” says LPA Design Director Rick D’Amato.
The pre-school was certified as LEED Platinum in April. The pre-school is also pursuing the Living Building Challenge’s Petal Certification, one of the first projects in the region to target both a high-level of sustainability and the healthy environment standard.

Puerto Rico-based firm Gox Rising offers to buy out creditor claims from the now-defunct Mt. Gox Exchange

Gox Rising engages the international community of creditors of the Mt. Gox Estate with an offer to purchase claims from those creditors that do not wish to wait for the final outcome of the ongoing civil litigation.
Mt. Gox filed for bankruptcy in 2014 after losing more than 850,000 BTC due to theft and mismanagement. (Case Number: Tokyo District Court 2014 (fu) no. 3830) 200,000 BTC was later found in an old-format wallet. In 2018 Japanese courts changed the case from bankruptcy to a civil rehabilitation case, meaning creditors could now receive the missing bitcoin rather than the cash equivalent – approximately $451 US per BTC – at the time of the exchange's collapse.
Since that time, the progress of the case has been delayed several times and the outcome of the proceedings is still not resolved. The case could still be years from the final resolution. A trustee has been tasked with redistributing the remaining bitcoin, which has been delayed by a series of lawsuits brought against the Mt. Gox Estate.
“We recognize that some investors may not wish to wait any longer to see what the final resolution and payout will be and how much longer that payout will be delayed,” said a Gox Rising spokesperson. “Each claim will need to be individually reviewed, but we are looking to offer $800 US per BTC claim. Gox Rising will pay that in Bitcoin, or in the fiat currency of the Creditor’s choice. Our payment would be put in escrow and made within 10 business days of the claim transfer confirmation.”
They continued, “We have also been investigating potential avenues for bringing better liquidity options to claim holders and any interested parties should reach out. We look forward to conversations irrespective of claim size."

Rapid Application Group leads collaboration to enable thousands of FDA approved devices produced using additive manufacturing

Rapid Application Group (RAG), in collaboration with FlightSafety International and Newton Design, responded in mid-March 2020 to deliver thousands of critical Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) devices to local first responders and healthcare teams in Oklahoma.
Pivoting rapidly from their usual aerospace production work, the three companies teamed together to start production of face shields and masks using additive manufacturing. Working with healthcare providers and the FDA, the team at RAG were able to create approved designs within 3 weeks and the three started production of face shields and masks immediately using additive manufacturing with Class VI materials. Producing hundreds of parts a day, the three companies have produced and delivered more than 5,000 parts, with thousands of orders yet to fulfill.

FlightSafety International, a manufacturer of critical flight simulation systems, stepped up to the challenge from its Tulsa, OK plant by offering additional additive manufacturing platforms to help the effort.
“We felt we had to assist what the team at Rapid Application Group had started,” said Mike Halsey, Director of Manufacturing and Material Management, at the FlightSafety’s Simulation facility in Broken Arrow. “This is a crisis like no other and we realized that Oklahoma’s manufacturers were ideally positioned to help.”
Newton Design, also a supplier of flight simulation and training systems, also volunteered when they heard what the RAG team were doing. Donating use of their SLS additive systems, they quickly verified the machines and materials and started production of the PPE devices.
“When we heard the call, we felt we had to respond,” said Jeff Newton, President, Newton Design. “The work between the three teams has been remarkable in its ability to rapidly produce PPE devices that are in desperate need.”
As the teams step forward with 24/7 production using additive manufacturing, they are also preparing tooling for increased production through injection molding.
“Additive is perfect for rapid production without having to wait for tooling,” commented Jason Dickman, COO, Rapid Application Group. “But we are going to use all the tools and production technologies available to us to make sure the need is met.”
As the team ramped up, it was also assisted by companies such as EOS, an additive manufacturing vendor, which donated critical materials for the teams to use.
“We really couldn’t have got to the production phase so quickly without the help of these incredible companies,” said Terry Hill, CEO, Rapid Application Group. “We are all doing 24/7 production to fill the need and protect our healthcare and first responder teams and will continue until the work is done.”
