The Island Where People Forget to Die

By Andrea Frazzetta / Source: NY Times

In 1943, a Greek war veteran named Stamatis Moraitis came to the United States for treatment of a combat-mangled arm. He'd survived a gunshot wound, escaped to Turkey and eventually talked his way onto the Queen Elizabeth, then serving as a troopship, to cross the Atlantic. Moraitis settled in Port Jefferson, N.Y., an enclave of countrymen from his native island, Ikaria. He quickly landed a job doing manual labor. Later, he moved to Boynton Beach, Fla. Along the way, Moraitis married a Greek-American woman, had three children and bought a three-bedroom house and a 1951 Chevrolet.

One day in 1976, Moraitis felt short of breath. Climbing stairs was a chore; he had to quit working midday. After X-rays, his doctor concluded that Moraitis had lung cancer. As he recalls, nine other doctors confirmed the diagnosis. They gave him nine months to live. He was in his mid-60s.

Moraitis considered staying in America and seeking aggressive cancer treatment at a local hospital. That way, he could also be close to his adult children. But he decided instead to return to Ikaria, where he could be buried with his ancestors in a cemetery shaded by oak trees that overlooked the Aegean Sea. He figured a funeral in the United States would cost thousands, a traditional Ikarian one only $200, leaving more of his retirement savings for his wife, Elpiniki. Moraitis and Elpiniki moved in with his elderly parents, into a tiny, whitewashed house on two acres of stepped vineyards near Evdilos, on the north side of Ikaria. At first, he spent his days in bed, as his mother and wife tended to him. He reconnected with his faith. On Sunday mornings, he hobbled up the hill to a tiny Greek Orthodox chapel where his grandfather once served as a priest. When his childhood friends discovered that he had moved back, they started showing up every afternoon. They'd talk for hours, an activity that invariably involved a bottle or two of locally produced wine. I might as well die happy, he thought.

In the ensuing months, something strange happened. He says he started to feel stronger. One day, feeling ambitious, he planted some vegetables in the garden. He didn't expect to live to harvest them, but he enjoyed being in the sunshine, breathing the ocean air. Elpiniki could enjoy the fresh vegetables after he was gone.

Six months came and went. Moraitis didn't die. Instead, he reaped his garden and, feeling emboldened, cleaned up the family vineyard as well. Easing himself into the island routine, he woke up when he felt like it, worked in the vineyards until midafternoon, made himself lunch and then took a long nap. In the evenings, he often walked to the local tavern, where he played dominoes past midnight. The years passed. His health continued to improve. He added a couple of rooms to his parents' home so his children could visit. He built up the vineyard until it produced 400 gallons of wine a year. Today, three and a half decades later, he's 97 years old â€" according to an official document he disputes; he says he's 102 â€" and cancer-free. He never went through chemotherapy, took drugs or sought therapy of any sort. All he did was move home to Ikaria.

The Magical Island of Longevity

I met Moraitis on Ikaria this past July during one of my visits to explore the extraordinary longevity of the island's residents. For a decade, with support from the National Geographic Society, I've been organizing a study of the places where people live longest. The project grew out of studies by my partners, Dr. Gianni Pes of the University of Sassari in Italy and Dr. Michel Poulain, a Belgian demographer. In 2000, they identified a region of Sardinia's Nuoro province as the place with the highest concentration of male centenarians in the world. As they zeroed in on a cluster of villages high in Nuoro's mountains, they drew a boundary in blue ink on a map and began referring to the area inside as the "blue zone. Starting in 2002, we identified three other populations around the world where people live measurably longer lives than everyone else. The world's longest-lived women are found on the island of Okinawa. On Costa Rica's Nicoya Peninsula, we discovered a population of 100,000 mestizos with a lower-than-normal rate of middle-age mortality. And in Loma Linda, Calif., we identified a population of Seventh-day Adventists in which most of the adherents' life expectancy exceeded the American average by about a decade.

In 2003, I started a consulting firm to see if it was possible to take what we were learning in the field and apply it to American communities. We also continued to do research and look for other pockets of longevity, and in 2008, following a lead from a Greek researcher, we began investigating Ikaria. Poulain's plan there was to track down survivors born between 1900 and 1920 and determine when and where individuals died. The approach was complicated by the fact that people often moved around. That meant that not only were birth and death records required, but also information on immigration and emigration.

The data collection had to be rigorous. Earlier claims about long-lived people in places like Ecuador's Vilcabamba Valley, Pakistan's Hunza Valley or the Caucasus Mountains of Georgia had all been debunked after researchers discovered that many residents didn't actually know their ages. For villagers born without birth certificates, it was easy to lose track. One year they were 80; a few months later they were 82. Pretty soon they claimed to be 100. And when a town discovers that a reputation for centenarians draws tourists, who's going to question it? Even in Ikaria, the truth has been sometimes difficult to nail down. Stories like the one about Moraitis's miraculous recovery become instant folklore, told and retold and changed and misattributed. (Stories about Moraitis have appeared on Greek TV.) In fact, when I was doing research there in 2009, I met a different man who told me virtually the exact same story about himself.

The study would try to cut through the stories and establish the facts about Ikaria's longevity. Before including subjects, Poulain cross-referenced birth records against baptism or military documentation. After gathering all the data, he and his colleagues at the University of Athens concluded that people on Ikaria were, in fact, reaching the age of 90 at two and a half times the rate Americans do. (Ikarian men in particular are nearly four times as likely as their American counterparts to reach 90, often in better health.) But more than that, they were also living about 8 to 10 years longer before succumbing to cancers and cardiovascular disease, and they suffered less depression and about a quarter the rate of dementia. Almost half of Americans 85 and older show signs of Alzheimer's. (The Alzheimer's Association estimates that dementia cost Americans some $200 billion in 2012.) On Ikaria, however, people have been managing to stay sharp to the end.

Life is here to serve you, not put obstacles in your way.
Everything you desire will show up or not show up in response to
your vibration. And if something else shows itself to you that you
prefer, life can give you that too. You're calling your own shots.
The key is to feel good no matter what. Tell the story the way you
want it to be. You truly can command your subconscious mind.

Sometimes we worry because what we want requires so much of our
attention or so much is happening in our lives that it is hard to
hold a stable position - but you can.  Just keep telling yourself,
"I am in charge here. I am in charge of my life. I am in charge of
what comes. And more importantly, I am in charge of how I FEEL."

When it comes to money, the reason most people want a lot of it
is because of fear (which dams up the stream). There is nothing
wrong with having money, but the big mistake is asking for the
security that comes from promises of others.  You want your
security to come through your awareness of knowing how the laws of
the universe work. You know how to focus on what you desire and you
know how this focus will always bring you the good things in life,
including money. Remember, you can command your subconscious mind.

Don't try to see so far down the road. Don't demand that promises
be made by others to give you the security you need. This is the
thing that makes the difference between someone who can
stand in an attitude of belief and trust and someone who cannot.

You have a lot of evidence in your life that supports the power of
your focus.  Don't try to figure it all out at once.  Just feel
more appreciation for what you have already and more will come to
you.

I make my money by trading "futures". I learned the trade from my dad. When I was 15 years old my dad gave me $10,000. 5 yrs. later, I made my first million.

I wake up every day as a totally independent and self-reliant man. I control every moment of my time. I work when I want, doing what I want. And, when I’m done working, I simply  take off to do whatever my heart desires.

If I want to spend the day visiting with family and friends, I do it …

If I want to hop on a plane for an unplanned getaway vacation, I do that, too.
In fact, last year I “took off” on a trip around the world. I spent some time in Lithuania, then travelled to Salzburg, Austria for a few days of outdoor fun. From there, I moved on to Vienna, Austria, and finally a night in Copenhagen before traveling home.

And just last month, I spent a week touring the Porsche Factory in Germany. I even raced their latest experimental models.

I have all the money I want and the time to enjoy it. I make my own rules, set my own agenda and pretty much live life on my own terms … every day.

We will resume programming our minds when everyone is ready. For now, everyone can reply, post a comment. I am serious when I say I want to help you. This is not a multi-level marketing plan. I do not want to recruit you to make money for me. I have all the money I need or want.

Money Tree Plant Care

Botanical Name: Pachira aquatica

Money tree plant care is easy. Just put it where it'll get some indirect sunlight. Water thoroughly and allow the soil to dry out a bit between waterings. Cut back on water in the winter when growth slows. Use a container with drainage holes and take care not to overwater your plant because it can get root rot.

Its thin trunks are often braided by growers to add to its appeal. Each spoke-like leaf has 5-7 bright-green leaflets.

Don't overpot. Use a smallish container because a too-big container will hold too much water. Soggy potting mix is often the biggest problem with this plant, causing stem and root rot and yellowing/dropping leaves. Growing money tree in a small container will also prevent it from getting too big. In fact, this tree can be grown as a bonsai. Regular pruning will also help control its size. Pinch or prune off growing tips.

Give it a winter rest. Keep your money tree warm and in bright light year-round. But cut back on water and stop fertilizing in the winter months because growth slows down with lower light levels.

Brown, crispy leaves is a symptom of dry air or low light levels. Plants often are in shock when moved to a new home because they are adjusting to a new environment. Keep your plant away from heat/AC vents and cold drafts from windows or doorways.

Dropped leaves are also caused by relocation shock. If your new tree drops its leaves, don't give up on it. They'll grow back with good care. Place your money tree in a bright location and leave it there. Increasing humidity around the plant can help. While it's tempting to overwater a shedding plant, don't. It only makes the problem worse.

According to feng shui, money tree will bring good luck and fortune. No, your money tree plant won't actually grow currency, but it is a good investment. Treat it well, and you'll enjoy this delightful tree for many years.

Money Tree Care Tips

Origin: Central and South America

Height: Up to 10 ft (3 m) tall

Light: Bright light, but no direct sun. Thrives under fluorescent light.

Water: Money tree plant likes water in big gulps. Water thoroughly, until water comes out the drainage holes in the bottom of the pot, then allow the top 1-2 inches (2.5-5 cm) to dry out between waterings. Avoid getting water on the trunk, which causes stem rot. Water less in winter.

Humidity: Moderate to high. Try to keep the relative humidity at 50% or higher. Set the pot on a tray of wet pebbles to raise the humidity around it.

Temperature: Average room temperatures 60-75°F, 16-24°C;

Soil: Use a peat moss-based potting mix with perlite or sand added for good drainage.

Fertilizer: Feed every 2 weeks in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted by half.

Propagation: Seeds or stem tips. Take stem tip cuttings in spring, with at least 2 leaf nodes attached. Dip the cut end in rooting hormone powder then place it in moist potting mix. Be patient -- it can take several weeks to root.

And then there is another candidate, the "Wojtyla from the Far East, Luis Antonio Tagle, Archbishop of Manila in the Philippines. He is said to possess the brain of a theologian and the heart of a shepherd, as well as being more charismatic than most in the College of Cardinals. But at 55, he is also the second youngest in the College of Cardinals, practically a baby by Vatican standards.

DAY 1

Today we will start programming our minds. I begin this process by promising you that this 27 days exercise will work to bring you all the abundance, wealth, peace and prosperity that you are dreaming of regardless your current financial situation or circumstance. It worked for me so it should also work with you. The most important thing is that we believe and must have faith.
ASK AND YOU SHALL RECEIVE.

Say this aloud to yourself at least 9 times a day.

"I AM fearless in letting money go out, knowing that my Higher Power is my immediate and ENDLESS supply."

For 27 days PLEASE do not reply to this topic. THANK YOU.

programma na mi mr. money...
Thank you for your interest Votives. This is a very special programming for you. I hope you are a catholic by religion. Every afternoon at 3 pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. Ask anything from our Lord Jesus Christ and He will grant it to you if it is compatible with His will. Ask that abundance and prosperity will flow through you so that you can share your blessings with those who are in need. God's mercy can be spititual as well as material.

Hour of Divine Mercy

In her diary Faustina wrote that Jesus specified three o'clock each afternoon as the hour at which mercy was best received, and asked her to pray the Chaplet of Mercy and venerate the Divine Mercy image at that hour. On October 10, 1937, in her diary (Notebook V, item 1320) Faustina attributed the following statement to Jesus:
As often as you hear the clock strike the third hour immerse yourself completely in My mercy, adoring and glorifying it, invoke its omnipotence for the whole world, and particularly for poor sinners, for at that moment mercy was opened wide for every soul.
Three o'clock in the afternoon corresponds to the hour at which Jesus died on the cross. This hour is called the "hour of Divine Mercy" or the "hour of great mercy".

Yesterday i made $152,000. You might think this is a big amount but this is peanuts compared to what George Soros made. According to a recent article in Business Insider, George Soros made $1 billion since November on a single trade.

How did he do it?

Betting against the Japanese yen.

The yen has fallen close to 20% against the dollar as the Japanese promised to crank up the printing presses indefinitely.

But this wasn’t just luck, and it isn’t the first time Soros made a billion on one trade. Back in the 1990s, he made a billion betting on the fall of the British pound sterling.

In fact, Soros has made billions of dollars, year after year, by understanding one simple fact:

Catching a big trend at the right time is the fastest, easiest way to make huge profits in the market..
