Nope. It's difficult enough to get decent gigs let alone get labels to sign them. These bands aren't really after having their songs recorded and sold massively but they just want to play, be heard and have a rockin' good time. Some of them are doing recordings though but are using their own money to pay for the fees.

The best thing to do really is just to go to their shows and enjoy the scene. Rock on!

It's quite difficult for underground rock bands in Bohol to get a decent event to play at these days. No producer seems to be interested with producing a concert with bands who look like (and sound like) a bunch of hungry retards/addicts/degenerates pounding on empty rice kettles. All they want are the commercially viable, publicly loved and horribly boring radio pop-rock bands. I mean, I totally understand them. They won't bet their money on something that won't be a viable for the cashflow.

With a little prodding from my friends, I went to the Spongecola Concert. I had to test my brand-spanking-new Nikon D80 DSLR anyways, so off I went.

"Where's, Yael?", you say. You'd have to click here to see him. Yeah, yeah. I'm a tease. Sue me. :)

P.S. For those of you who are Pinoy-band ingnorant (like me), Yael is the hunkadory frontman (or so hundreds of youngish-girl fans scream) of the Pinoy Rock band Spongecola. FYI.

Hey there. As planned and promised, a group of us photographers went out one sunshiny Sunday to watch and document (take photos, that is) this years Sandugo Streetdancing. So here they are, the photos from the event:

Talk of the Town / Re: Sandugo 2007 was anemic
August 03, 2007, 09:44:34 AM

It was not anemic! Hahaha Or so I wrote in my blog. I had a fun taking photos of people, especially the dancers, who weren't having fun at all. I mean, under the sweltering heat of the freaky July sun, only a few could really afford a smile. Not without prodding from their trainors who would shout at those poor kids, "Smile! Smile mo! Kay naay piktyur!"

Oh, well.

Hmm...I'm a blogspot user but i'd like to point out that a lot of serious bloggers are using blogspot, mike. well, blogspot has its downside i suppose but there are also a lot of advantages..like good networking, SEO friendly, easy to use, lots of widgets, customizeable and most of all it's FREE! hehehe the last part is the best for me 'coz i'm a freeloader, baby..hahaha

but yeah, it's better if you have your own domain and hosting so you can use WordPress (the best in the world)..but it's also nice to have blogspot to maintain the "networking" advantage of blogger.com.

IMHO lang ha. :p

Photographers!

Let's hit the streets this Sunday to cover the annual Sandugo Street Dancing Festival. Together with a bunch of Bohol-based, we will be crouching, leaning and peeling our way into the event to capture the coolest photos we can get. It is also a nice way to know each other and be merry! Hooray!

(Click here to view some photos from last year.) | (Click here to view my blog post last year.)

Coolest thing is, we can barge in across the cordons of those cadets that line up the sides of the streets to keep people from falling into the dancers. Your camera will be your press pass.

The event starts in the morning and ends in the afters. (Actually, I don't know the exact sked..hehe) Beer will be served afterwards! (pero KKB! hehehe)

Sigbin is quite right. Sir Gardy has been an icon these days in the culture and arts of Bohol. Actually he is currently sitting as the Chairman of the Bohol Arts, Culture and Heritage (BACH) Council.

Very well said, Riva.

Yeah I agree. We should wait. The disadvantages of changing to a parliamentary system of government greatly outnumber its advantages, at least, with our current social and political situation.

Ayaw pagdali-dali, Pinoy. Hinay-hinay lang. :)

Job Opportunity / Re: You want to WORK at GOOGLE?

"Their business naiveté was a plus. It helped them avoid many common mistakes of the dotcom age. For instance, the site went live before Page and Brin had thought to hire a webmaster. So while search giants like Yahoo were filling their home pages with news headlines, stock quotes and sports scores, Google had nothing but a search box and logo."

"3. Talk about money. they'll think you're just trying to get rich. Even though you probably are, it's something you're not supposed to discuss out loud"

On your way to the interview, be sure to pick up a bottle of Visine or two to wipe that perpetual "dollor sign" on your eyes. They won't like it. Not a chance.

General Topic / Re: Education for Tourists
July 05, 2007, 12:59:47 PM
With all the "tele-novelas" (both new and reruns..hey AngTV is being re-played too, fyi!) bombarding the airwaves 24/7, I'm sure the DepEd would pull-out all the Filipino subjects across the board this year. I mean, the tube is way better than your average Filipino teacher who still teaches tagalog sh*t like: "Ang yeso ay gamit panulat sa pisara!" or "Baybayin sa tagalog ang salitang parirala!" Aaaannnnooo??? Give me a break! No wonder students go crazy and flunk all other subjects, too.

So instead of the usual fare of "takdang aralins", let them watch Judy Ann's "Ysabella", the star-studded "Rounin" or the rerun of "Meteor Garden" (yes, those Taiwaneses are fluent!) for their daily dose of Tagalog and in a year they'll be better than Sam Milby or Manny Pacquiao.

No, seriously though, I don't think the state of education in the Philippines is not brought about only by the apparent "pabago-bago" of the official medium of instruction. Among other things, 1. government spending on education has decreased dramatically (together with health and social services) in favor of the increase of military allocation and cell-phone load budget. 2. business persons have realized that schools are way better than factories as a business. 3. and most importantly, all other countries that used to come to us have improved their educational systems that they don't have to travel to study anymore. Leaving us lagging behind.

Poor us. Is there still hope? Anyone?
#19
Absolutely! Boholanas (Filipinas in general) are strong and sharp yet sweet and caring at the same time. Nobody else can top that I'm sure. But there are better ways to showcase these gifts. Beauty pageants just don't quite do the trick, really. Sorry to say, pero kitang tanan na lang intawn mapakauwawan ba.

Anyways, don't some of them wear bagul and all that up the stage? I'm sure someone has done the maglalatik during the talent portion. :)

Sad to say, the candidates of "beauty pageants" lately have been less than beautiful and/or smart. Much of these events have evolved into mediocrity and sheer bore-fests. The signs are apparent in the thickenning of make-ups, more constricted poster photos, and most importantly, the number of "boooos" contestants get for the wrong grammar, pronunciations and logic of their answers. Gone are the days when pageants were still about beauty and glamour. (And well, money).

It's not that we've run out of "beautiful and smart (and rich)" candidates. It is more on the fact that nobody is willing to take up the challenge anymore. "Baduy" and "untasteful" are the most common remarks. I can hear the some girls saying it's "cheap" to join pageants and would rather do gigs up the catwalk as models. While a growing number are saying it's the worst form of sexual exploitation - legally parading young innocent girls who will be preys to businessmen or politician-flesh-predators after they win.

Some traditions are worth keeping while other aren't. As a people, we, the Boholanos, I guess, are just starting to rethink about OUR traditions - whether they are worth keeping or not.

Hey, I think I know you. Were you also a product of DSPCs and RSPCs? Be patient with an old lady like me. I'm trying to job a rusty and rusting memory.

Hey! Musta? I don't think we've met. And I'm not a product of the press cons either. Don't worry too much about your age though..or it'll get the best of you. :)

See you around.
