Philippine Provinces / CARP in Region 12
February 16, 2010, 07:13:49 AM
(PNA) â€" The Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) in Region 12 topped anew the nationwide processing and distribution of private lands last year that were covered by the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP).

Nasser Musali, DAR Region 12 director, noted in a report that they were able to distribute some 8,671 hectares of land to CARP beneficiaries within the region’s four provinces and five cities in 2009.

Region 12 covers the provinces of South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat Sarangani, North Cotabato and the cities of General Santos, Koronadal, Kidapawan, Tacurong and Cotabato.

Musali said their accomplishment last year was reportedly the highest among the 16 DAR regional offices in the country.

He said it helped them retain their status as the topmost performing regional office for the last six years or since 2004.

From 2004 to 2008, he said they were able to distribute some 85,309 hectares of private lands to CARP beneficiaries in the region.

DAR Region 12 registered the highest accomplishment in 2005 with a distribution record of 21,028 hectares.

Agrarian Reform Secretary Nasser Pangandaman credited the region for topping last year’s land distribution program and meeting anew their targets.

He said DAR Region 12 has been serving as model for the agency’s other regional units for the implementation of CARP, which expires in 2014. (PNA)

First district Rep. Ma. Isabelle Climaco-Salazar has advised the consuming public to help conserve water and energy as a practical and sensible measure to cushion the effects of the looming energy and water crisis in this southern port city and other parts of the country.

Salazar’s advise came as the El Niño phenomenon is taking its toll on almost all areas of the country, drying up rivers and lakes which are the main sources of energy and water supply.

“I encourage everyone to save energy and water to adapt to climate change,” Salazar said.

The Zamboanga City Electric Cooperative (Zamcelco) has resorted to power shedding while the Zamboanga City Water District (ZCWD) has implemented water rationing scheme since last week to ensure sufficient supply of energy and water to the consumers in this southern port city.

Salazar said the decrease in the water level in Lake Lanao due to the onset of the dry season is the main reason that power supply is erratic in this southern port city in particular and Mindanao in general.

“The same is true in other areas of the country,” she said.

The water level in Tumaga river and other tributaries has also dropped due to insufficient rain, which is the main reason the ZCWD has implemented water rationing scheme in this city.

Salazar said the present situation requires public commitment to energy management strategies and to water conservation strategies.

She stressed the residential and business sectors have to do their share of smartly managing water and energy consumption while the different utilities, government agencies and other sectors are undertaking measures to help mitigate the impact of water and power shortage. (PNA)

Philippine Provinces / Grenade Blast in North Cotabato
February 16, 2010, 07:12:03 AM
A 13-year-old boy died and his father was seriously injured when a grenade went off while they were plowing the rice field in a village in Carmen town in North Cotabato, around 7:15 a.m., on Saturday, belated police reports said Monday.

Insp. Winston Seniel, chief of Carmen PNP, identified the slain boy as Joebert Abellana Librando, 13, of Sitio Kakal, Purok-7, Barangay Ugalingan in Carmen.

Seniel said the boy was walking along a partition dike of the rice paddy when he accidentally stepped on what appeared to be a booby trap: bamboo grass where the safety pin of a fragmentation grenade was attached.

The boy died on the spot.

His father Tirso, who was a few meters ahead of him, was hit on his back and was rushed to nearby Kabacan Medical Specialist Hospital in Kabacan, North Cotabato.

Seniel said based on the initial investigations, it was the boy’s father who set the booby trap.

“The boy’s father admitted to our operatives that conducted the investigations that it was him that set the trap. The booby trap was designed to hit those persons who would change the course of the irrigation in his area,” he said.

Seniel said they are readying charges against the boy’s father, including illegal possession of explosives. (PNA)

DAVAO CITY, Feb. 15 (PNA) - President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo will leave the legacy of almost full electrification to Mindanaoans, with majority of the 9,730 total barangays in Mindanao already electrified, Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Secretary Ricardo Saludo said on Monday.

“About 9,600 or 99 percent of the total barangays in Mindanao are already electrified. This means a lot to an island that has continuously complained of being left in the backwater of the country’s development since electricity brings the barangays to the 21st century,” he said during a press conference here.

Saludo said this is a 46-percent increase compared to the 6,565 total barangays electrified in the year 2000.

He said Mindanao is able to generate growth that is not dependent on electricity at all.

“You don’t need electricity to grow crops,” he said.

However, he added, the government has seen to it that Mindanao has the necessary electricity needed to encourage the growth of the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) sector.

When asked about the power shortage in Mindanao, Saludo said there is no power shortage here but only a tripping of the power lines.

“This is not a problem of generation but of transmission,” he added.

He said the issue on power shortage is tricky since it is also a sign of economic development.

There could be a shortage of power, he added, because development went faster than expected.

Former Dangerous Drugs Board chairman, now senatorial candidate Vicente Sotto III of Nationalist People Coalition (NPC), said that no politician in the city has been found engaged in the illegal drugs business.

However, there are businessmen from Bacolod and Iloilo who have already been included in Philippine Drugs Agency’s (PDEA) drugs list.

He said that before the filing of certificate of candidacy, PDEA had already a watch list of those political candidates involved in the illegal drugs.

Sotto was in Bacolod recently as a guest to the Bacolaodiat Festival, which was on its 5th year celebration.

He said the drugs watch list was a compilation of the records from the different agencies of the National Bureau of Investigation, Philippine National Police, and other agencies , copy of which was furnished to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

He said that if there were some local officials whose municipalities and cities are in the watch list, “it doesn’t necessarily mean that the mayor is directly involved.” (PNA)

Residents of six barangays identified by the Revolutionary Proletariat Army- Alex Boncayao Brigade (RPA-ABB) as peace development areas have availed of some P25-million worth of anti-poverty sub-projects from the national government through the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP).

The anti-poverty sub-projects were implemented under the Kalayaan Barangays Project (KBP) which were chosen based on a community needs assessment.

Each barangay received some P4.5 million worth of projects, according to Presidential Assistant for Western Visayas Raul Banias.

Just recently, the sub-projects ranging from farm-to-market road (FMR), water system, electricity, school buildings, day care centers and health centers were turned over to their respective recipient in a ceremony that was graced by the commanding officer of the 3rd Infantry Division of the Philippine Army, Gen. Police Regional Office-8 (PRO-8) director Chief Supt. Ray Lañada said that Pilar Luzano, a widow and a resident of Barangay Suba, Danao City, had just disembarked from a passenger ferry at the Ferry Terminal in Sito Pingag, Barangay Matlang, Isabel, Leyte when intercepted at a checkpoint by elements of the Isabel Municipal Police Station on Sunday noon.

Found in her possession were three cal. 45 pistols, one cal. 45 revolver, five cal. 38 revolvers, a cal. 22 magnum revolver, assorted magazine assemblies and two silencers for cal. 45 pistol.

According to Lañada, criminal charges will be filed against Luzano for illegal possession of firearms and violation of the Omnibus Election Code.

Also on Sunday, police arrested Chairman Antonio Deocampo of Barangay Daraga, Placer, Masbate for possession of illegal guns.

A composite police team from the Masbate Police Provincial Office, PNP Special Action Force and Special Task Force Masbate led by Senior Inspector Elmer Decena searched Deocampo's residence on Sunday morning by virtue of a Warrant of Arrest issued by Judge Nilo Barsaga of RTC Branch 46 of Masbate City.

Confiscated from Deocampo were an Elisco M16 rifle, a Winchester M14 rifle, a 9mm Intratec KG9 machine pistol, and assorted ammunition.

On Saturday night, police and military troops manning a Comelec checkpoint were fired upon by some 20 armed men in Barangay TUmahubong, Sumisip, Basilan. No casualties were reported among the government security forces who returned fire prompting the attacker to withdraw.

Reports reaching the PNP National Operations Center said an IED explosion preceded the strafing and shooting at the position of government security forces by armed men believed led by Whyms Wakil and Rolly Ikib, both sub-leaders of the terrorist Abu Sayyaf Group.

Troops are now in hot pursuit operations against all the perpetrators believed to be hired by unscrupulous politicians for election purposes. (PNA)

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga, Feb. 15 (PNA) -- The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has launched its livelihood program in the municipality of Sto. Tomas here to help marginalized residents in getting steady source of income.

DOLE regional director Ernesto Bihis, together with Sto. Tomas Mayor Joselito Naguit and other local officials, awarded Tulong Pangkabuhayan sa ating Disadvantaged Workers (TUPAD) and Kabuhayan starter kits to the municipality’s 100 qualified beneficiaries.

The program was aimed at providing indigent families, especially ambulant vendors and others whose backyard business was severely affected by the typhoons and floodings last year, with steady source of income, Bihis said.

Luningning Vergara, head of the province’s Public Employment Services Office (PESO), said the DOLE had given P600,000 for the livelihood program while the local government unit of Sto. Tomas shared 20 percent of the program cost as its counterpart.

Vergara said that similar livelihood programs of the DOLE were launched in the municipalities of Guagua, Sta. Ana and the City of San Fernando earlier this year.

“We can very clearly see that the livelihood programs of DOLE directly benefit the needy families and that government funds are well spent and go to the intended public,” she said.

Aside from TUPAD and Kabuhayan starter kits, other livelihood programs of DOLE in the province include Kabataan Ito (K-Ito) which provides computer literacy learning sessions to out-of-school youths and nego-cart projects.

At present, Vergara said 90 percent of the province’s total number of municipalities were benefited by DOLE’s livelihood programs.

“For this year, the labor and employment office has earmarked a whopping P3.8 million to fund livelihood programs in the entire province of Pampanga,” she said.

A provincial ordinance was finally passed on Feb. 5 declaring and citing April 5, 1580 as the official foundation day of Pangasinan.

Provincial Ordinance No. 30-2010, approved on unanimous motion of all members of the provincial board, paved the way for the holding of a grand celebration on April 5 this year, to mark the 430th foundation of the province.

The board, headed by Vice Governor Marlyn Primicias Agabas, presiding officer, made a 10-minute recess in its regular session to personally witness the signing of the ordinance by Governor Amado Espino Jr.

It was Espino who created the research and study committee headed by Dr. Gonzalo T. Duque, president of Lyceum-Northwestern University.

After signing the provincial ordinance, Espino named Duque the chairman of the first-ever Pangasinan foundation day on April 5 this year.

The committee worked in tandem with Board Members Alfonso Bince Jr,. Von Mark Mendoza and Charissma Go in determinating the exact day, month and year when Pangasinan was founded.

The date April 5, 1580 was determined by the committee following research in various libraries and National Historical Institute. The committee even made series of communications with institutions in Madrid, Spain for them to shed light as to the day, month and year the province was founded.

The research and study committee was composed of representatives of the provincial government, historical and cultural organizations, academe and media.

The committee found out that it was on April 5, 1572 when Pangasinan was made an encomienda by the Spanish royal crown to receive instructions on the Catholic faith.

This means that Pangasinan was organized under one leadership and had identity of its own before the Spanish royal court.

Eight years later, in 1580, Pangasinan was organized into a political unit under an alcalde mayor who, at that time, has authority as head of province or provincial government with judicial function indicating that Pangasinan has become a province.

The research and study committee unanimously recommended April 5 as the day when Pangasinan became an encomienda in 1572, and when it became a province in 1580. (PNA)

Philippine Provinces / Donation to Davao Oriental
February 16, 2010, 07:04:06 AM
CITY OF MATI, Davao Oriental, Feb. 15 (PNA) - There seems to be an endless flow of donations for the Davao Oriental Provincial Hospital as many more international humanitarian organizations have continued to give assistance to the provincial government-run hospital.

Among the donations are modern hospital equipment and medicines intended primarily for the province's indigent patients who cannot afford the prohibitive cost of medicines and services of the private hospitals.

Just recently, the World Medical Relief Incorporated, a humanitarian group based in the United States of America, donated various hospital equipment and medicines to the Davao Oriental Provincial Hospital.

A grateful Davao Oriental Governor Corazon Malanyaon said the "endless support" being extended by international humanitarian groups for the province "will surely improve our health services especially for the highly impoverished people."

Malanyaon said her administration has given top priority to health care program, allocating a bulk of its annual budget to fund its health care programs, among them the purchase of adequate supply of medicines for the provincial hospital, the ongoing expansion of the provincial hospital and hiring of additional doctors and nurses.

The World Medical Relief, whose professed mission is "serving the sick and poor locally, nationally and internationally," said it will continue to give donations as they were inspired by the dedication of Gov. Malanyaon in pushing for meaningful health care programs especially for the poor people of Davao Oriental.

Philippine Provinces / No Failure of Philippine Elections
February 16, 2010, 07:03:20 AM
As many fear that the power crisis will have an effect on the May polls, deputy presidential spokesperson Ricardo Saludo assured on Monday that there will be no failure of election.

Although he admitted that tripping off of power was experienced the past weeks, he explained that the reason was not production but distribution.

Saludo said to solve the problem, major players are being brought in to the power sector, naming among them STEAD, a European power company, which is putting up a 261-megawatt coal plant.

He said the government is barred from putting up power plants and the Electric Power Industry Reform Act (EPIRA) Law prohibits the state-owned power company, the National Power Corporation, from getting into power production.

"The law prohibits the government to build more power plants and we work hard to bring in more investors in the power sector," Saludo said.

But citing the analysis of election lawyer, Atty. Romulo Macalintal, he said there will be no failure of the first ever automated elections in the country.

"In worst case scenario with about 70 percent counted through automation and 30 percent manually, you will not have failure of election," he said.

Saludo said even in case of a partial automation, the situation would still be far better compared before when 100 percent of the counting was done manually. (PNA)

(PNA) -- Mayor Rodrigo Duterte appealed on Monday to the city residents to stay calm amid the worry brought about by killing incident at a mall last week, involving the warring Moro clans of the Mangudadatus and Ampatuans.

Speaking to reporters at the city hall, he said he would exert effort to talk to these clans and ask them to spare the city from their conflict.

He said that it was just incidental that the warring families were in the city as most of their respective children study in the schools here.

“I will talk to these families to ask them to spare the city,” Duterte said.

He said he was wary of the impact of the incident to the confidence and safety of local residents to go to public places.

The mayor declined to comment on the merits of the incident leading to the death of Tamano Kamendan Mamalapat at the fourth floor of the mall, implicating the body guards of Buluan Vice Mayor Esmael Mangudadatu.

Duterte said he respected the right of the wife Mamalapat to file murder charges against the alleged perpetrators.

He urged the police to gather more pieces of evidence in the pursuit of any legal complaint cropping up from the incident.

Duterte reminded the police not to force anyone to testify against their will.

He surmised to believe more on the police report and the investigation of the fiscal on the incident. (PNA)

(PNA) â€" The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) 11 which covers Western Visayas is optimistic that it can achieve its collection goal for the year initially set between P5.7 and P6 billion.

BIR 11 officer-in-charge/regional director Atty. Glen Geraldino said the agency was short by about 13 percent from its P5.6 billion target collection last year but with the trend now, he was optimistic that it could be attained.

The agency collected about P307 million last month as against the P473 collection a year ago.

“If we can sustain the intensity of what we are doing, the close monitoring of the compliance of our taxpayers and we are conducting ‘Oplan Kandado’ for non-compliers I am positive that I can reach our goal,” he said.

Geraldino also said that the increased collection last month was a good indication that indeed the economy was picking up. (PNA)

Travel and Tours / Manila to Antique Flight
February 16, 2010, 06:57:28 AM
The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) is now preparing the airport in Antique, also known as the Evelio B. Javier Airport, for bigger aircraft operations that may start in April.

CAAP area manager Efren Nagrama said the airport presently accommodates the private planes owned by the Semirara Mining Corp. only.

However, the Cebu Pacific Air has already made known its intention to start commercial operations from the Evelio B. Javier Airport to Manila and vice-versa in April.

During a recent ‘Ulat sa Bayan’ by the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC), Nagrama said that the government spent around P52 million for the improvement of the runway surface, apron and other features to include the construction of the Flight Service Station.

The fund was taken from the President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's Social Fund and assisted by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp.

Nagrama also said that the coming in of flights from Manila to Antique would surely encourage the business sector to invest in the province because of its economic potential. (PNA)

DUMAGUETE CITY, Feb. 15 (PNA) â€" Police investigators are now looking closely at the possibility that the weekend murder of a beauty queen in Dumaguete City could be strongly linked to her alleged relationship with a politician.

Dumaguete police chief Supt. Leopoldo Cabanag, who declined to reveal the name of the politician, told reporters on Monday that probers were now considering the policitician as a possible suspect in the gunslay of 25-year old Ann Rose Fe Bernadette Neri.

Neri, who won the crown as Miss Dumaguete 2007 and held several other beauty titles as well, was shot at close range Friday evening at the Quezon Park in Dumaguete by a lone triggerman believed to be a gun-for-hire, said Cabanag.

Ann Rose and her sister, Charisse, were attending a Miss Gay pageant rehearsal when the gunman approached her and shot her twice.

She was rushed to the Holy Child Hospital, just on the next block from the city park, but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The victim was said to have been receiving death threats.

The police have yet to determine the motive of the killing and have engaged the services of a cartographic sketch artist after locating several witnesses to the crime.

Cabanag said the family of the victim was cooperating in the investigation of the case.

However, Cabanag believes the suspect is a gun-for-hire from Ozamis City in Mindanao and could have left the city by now.

Cabanag said he had spoken to the politician and had told him that the police were now focusing their investigation on him, although he admitted there were also other angles being considered in the murder.

He assured that the investigation will proceed without fear or favor.

Meanwhile, the victim’s mother, Rolinda Neri, is calling for justice for the untimely death of her daughter.

She said she had no personal knowledge about the problems of her daughter Ann Rose, who usually confided in her friends instead.

Mrs. Neri admitted of previous incidents in the past that had even been reported to the police, such as the burning of her daughter’s car.

She said she has given some vital information to the police that would hopefully help in their investigation.

(PNA) â€" Acting provincial election supervisor Atty. Eddie Aba has lauded the Diocesan Electoral Board (DEB) for spearheading Sunday’s peace covenant signing among political candidates, describing it as an encouraging step forward towards a peaceful, honest and orderly elections in May.

About 100 candidates and incumbents seeking various local positions such as congressman, governor, vice-governor, mayors and board members, flocked to the Marian Priests’ Center at the Cathedral compound Sunday morning for the first peace pact undertaken in the province for this year’s automated polls.

Aba expressed optimism that majority, if not all, of those who signed the manifesto during the peace covenant would hold true to their promise not to espouse violence and engage in unlawful acts to manipulate the vote.

He is, however, confident that many Negros Oriental candidates are peace-loving and God-fearing even as he called on the public and various sectors to be vigilant during the elections to protect the sanctity of the ballots.

Fr. Julius Heruela, DEB convenor, disclosed during the peace covenant that the DEB, the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV), and the National Citizens’ Movement for Free Elections (NAMFREL) have committed to undertaken massive voters’ education campaigns for the formation of conscience of the Filipino electorate to vote responsible and wisely.

He said one of their roles would include monitoring the conduct of the elections to safeguard the sanctity of the ballot and the integrity of the electoral process and educating the voters on “good governance and responsible citizenship particularly through the election of public officials with unsullied integrity, proven competence and non-negotiable independence.”

According to the priest, elections determine democracy, measure “the rule of the people, by the people and for the people,” and define the political stability of a government, and consequently, of the nation.

CAMP BGEN OSCAR M. FLORENDO, La Union, Feb. 15 (PNA)--At least five Partisan Armed Groups (PAGs) have already been neutralized by the police in the entire Ilocos Region as of February 14 this year, according to Police Regional Director Constante Azares Jr.

Azares said the five PAGs already neutralized were among 11 that reportedly operating in the whole Ilocos Region, comprising Pangasinan, La Union, Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte.

The PNP regional office organized a total of 11 Special Task Groups (STGs) to dismantle and neutralize the identified PAGs within Region 1.

Azares said that for each identified PAG, the police formed a dedicated task group to conduct a deliberate effort for their neutralization.

"The STGs had already drawn up case operation plans directed against the PAGs.” he said.

Azares identified the neutralized PAG members as Dennis Serquina, who was arrested on October 2009; and Warlito Roriquito, arrested in December 2009.

Both are members of the Alvin Flores Group, a notorious criminal gang responsible for the robbery of a Rolex watch store at Glorietta in Makati last year.

Also neutralized were Armando Flores and Nicolas Laroya, both from Pangasinan province; and Alvin Uniag from Naguilian town in La Union.

“Our operatives are undertaking continuous intelligence monitoring of the PAGs’ activities in coordination with other intelligence units,“ Azares said.

Technology / Release of the Opera version 10.5 beta
February 15, 2010, 08:26:06 PM
With today's release of the Opera 10.5 beta, HTML5 video is again moving one step closer to becoming the default way video is served online. There's a lot of ground to cover yet, but with four of the five major browsers supporting the feature, it's definitely on the right track. But, while any support for the upcoming standard is a good sign, Opera's latest move only makes the matter murkier than it already was and it further exacerbates the main issue behind HTML5 video, the codecs.

Codec choice and support is now the most heated issue with HTML5 video and one not likely to be settled soon, a major setback for a wider adoption of the proposed standard. There are two main competitors, the open source Theora and the proprietary h.264. Theora is more popular with browser makers, as it doesn't involve an expensive license and it creates a healthier environment for online video. h.264, on the other hand, is preferred by most video sites, at least the ones that ventured to launch support for HTML5 video, mostly for its superior performance and quality.

Mozilla is a strong supporter of Theora and will not implement h.264. Apple, on the other hand, has concerns about "hidden patents" in Theora and only supports the h.264 in Safari. Google supports both in Chrome and Internet Explorer neither. - softpedia.com

Technology / New GeForce GT 240 model
February 15, 2010, 12:20:10 PM
Mainstream end-users may be pleased to learn that NVIDIA cards are still coming out on a regular basis, even though they lack DirectX 11 support. Sparkle has recently unwrapped a new GeForce GT 240 model that bears the Calibre brand and comes both in a 512MB version, as well as one with 1GB memory. Sparkle employs a special cooling solution that, thanks to its high cooling power, enabled the manufacturer to push the card's clocks significantly higher than those of the stock model.

As far as technical specifications are concerned, the Calibre X240/X240G features 96 stream processors and 512MB/1GB GDDR5 memory with a frequency of 3600MHz, as opposed to the reference card whose memory runs at 3400MHz.

Also, the GT 240 graphics processing unit has a clock of 630MHz and a shader frequency of 1677MHz, compared to the respective stock speeds of 550MHz and 1340MHz. In addition, the card has a memory interface of 128 bits, support for DirectX 10.1 and D-Sub, DVI and HDMI outputs. - source: softpedia.com

Technology / Albatron G210-512 PCIe x1
February 15, 2010, 12:18:52 PM
Graphics cards have been evolving rapidly but, at the same time, they saw the need for better interfaces because the ones available were either too performance-restrictive or did not supply enough power. As such, graphics cards released nowadays typically operate on the PCI Express x16. Still, it seems that at least one company is seeking to make decent graphics available to the PCIe x1 interface. This manufacturer is the Taiwanese company Albatron, which has just unveiled its second PCIe x1 VGA card, namely the Albatron G210-512 PCIe x1.

The previous PCIe x1 VGA card that the Taiwanese company released was the GeForce 9500GT PCIE-1X, back in 2009, but the G210-512 PCIe x1 is its first such device to boast DirectX 10.1. This model, featuring a memory interface of 64 bits and 512MB DDR2, has the 40nm GT218 graphics processing unit (GPU) running at 589MHz. Furthermore, the shader and memory clocks are set at 1402MHz and 500Mhz, respectively. Other specs include 16 processing cores and a passive cooling module for heat dissipation.

PC enthusiasts, overclockers and hardcore gamers are always on the lookout for the most high-end components available. These types of end-users are defined by a voracious appetite for the best in computing, memory, graphics and connectivity. This need is not restricted to the system's components alone, as such users also often put special effort in choosing a suitable case. Hoping to provide such consumers with a suitable option, Sunbeamtech has stepped up with its VentMax chassis, which hopes to fulfill end-users' needs for both performance and aesthetics.

Sumbeamtech describes its computer chassis as “designed for high performance cooling […] to suit the needs of our demanding customers.” A good cooling system always enables a computer to survive longer than it would in the absence of a solid airflow and, in the case of overclocked systems, it can make the difference between life and death (the system's, that is).

As such, the VentMax, as its name implies, comes with a variety of fans, five of them being pre-installed. One 120 x 120 x 25 mm Silent Fan is placed at the front, for intake, with another, identical, one installed on the side. There is also an optional, extra 120mm fan for side intake. Exhaust is achieved by an 80 x 80 x 25 mm Silent Fan at the rear and two top 120mm spinners, which are “tri-speed adjustable.” - source: softpedia.com

Sapphire has been implementing its Vapor-X treatment into whichever of its cards saw a significant popularity. One such card is AMD's ATI Radeon HD 5850 that Sapphire has redesigned with a custom PCB and is going to soon launch as part of its Toxic Series. The card has a custom-built PCB and is factory overclocked, with speeds higher than those of the reference model for the graphics processing unit and the memory.

Even though the card has not been introduced yet, it is already being listed on Overclockers UK, along with the complete list of specifications and a fine image gallery. The Toxic HD 5850 is described as having a GPU clock of 765MHz, compared to the stock 725MHz, and a memory frequency of 4500MHz, as opposed to the reference 4000MHz. In addition, the card boasts 1400 stream processors and its 1GB of GDDR5 memory operates on an interface of 256 bits.

This factory overclock is kept alive and stable by the aforementioned Vapor-X liquid cooling solution. This cooler not only allows the card itself to run at lower temperatures than would normally be possible, but it also creates less noise and provides headroom for further performance tuning. This overclocking potential makes it suited for overclockers and, in addition, the card is also made aesthetically noticeable through its dash of ray blue graphics. - source: softpedia.com

Technology / Network-attached storage device
February 15, 2010, 12:15:15 PM
Eager to cater to the storage needs of small and medium businesses, Synology UK has been developing a network-attached storage device that can be set up and configured in only a few minutes. Now complete, the DiskStation DS710+ NAS does not require end-users to know extensive technical knowledge in order to install it and, as such, will serve well not only business environments but also storage enthusiasts.

As one of the few Synology DiskStations powered by an Intel processor, the DS710+ consumes only 31W of power. It can pack up to a significant 14TB of storage space, if purchasers choose to pair it with a DX510, an upcoming external drive unit. Also, DS710+ supports JBOD, RAID 0, 1,5 and 6, which means that it can reach read and write speeds of over 110MB/s and 100MB/s, respectively, when running within a Windows environment.

"As far as a small or medium business is concerned, the DS710+ ticks all the right boxes," exclaimed Victor Chiang, Sales and Marketing Director, Synology UK. "Smaller than the size of a shoe box, the DiskStation is powerful, secure and reliable enough to cope with the majority of a company's backup, IT and internet requirements at a low initial cost outlay and on-going running costs." - source: softpedia.com

Technology / Quanta Computer and Compal Electronics
February 15, 2010, 12:12:09 PM
Currently, Hewlett-Packard holds the top position as a PC supplier, followed closely by Acer, the latter having managed to secure the second place after outpacing Dell. Acer is already putting efforts into outmatching HP and, more recently, the company has even been reported to be working on an ultrathin laptop that will supposedly be instrumental in the reaching of this goal. Still, while these two are competing against each other, Quanta and Compal are making strides of their own.

Digitimes reports that Quanta Computer and Compal Electronics have been seeing their notebook shipments growing and are expected to sell 50 million units and 46-48 million units, respectively, in 2010. This means that, at least on the notebook front, these two might even take the crown of leadership away from Acer and HP. If realized, this will be the first time when Compal and Quanta outsell the current two top players, whose notebook shipments are forecast to revolve around 45 million for Hewlett-Packard and 40 million for Acer. - source: softpedia.com

Two men from the Penn State University seem to have built and tested a device capable of performing wireless transmissions based on reflected infrared light. This device was said to transmit data through the air at a speed six to 14 times faster than the most capable WiFi networks currently in existence. Not only that but the two inventors even state that their system can support data rates “well beyond” the 1 gigabit per second they claim to have reached.

The two inventors are Mohsen Kavehrad, professor of electrical engineering and director of the university's Center for Information and Communications Technology Research, and graduate student Jarir Fadlullah. Part of their setup modulated a beam of infrared light that was focused on the ceiling, with a specially modified photodetector being tasked with picking up the reflections. Such optical networks may prove more suitable and capable in hospitals, factories and aircraft, among others, because, in such cases, radio frequency transmissions can interfere with the control systems, navigation systems or medical devices. - source: softpedia.com

Technology / Power7 Eight-core Processor Server
February 15, 2010, 12:09:37 PM
While Advanced Micro Devices and Intel are aggressively promoting their consumer-oriented central processors, IBM has decided not to pay heed to this segment overly much, investing, instead, more time and effort into its high-performance multi-core server solutions. Most recently, the company has completed the development of its Power7 eight-core server chips and has begun to ship them on schedule.

IBM designed its Power7 processors as a means to achieve a high computing performance and efficiency in tasks that handle high quantities of data. The chip is built with up to eight cores, each boasting 8MB of embedded DRAM, removing the need for L3 cache. As such, these processors can run up to four threads at the same time and achieve a throughput that is four times greater than the one possible with the Power6 processor. The Power7 also has 1.2 billion transistors and can divide any system into up to 1,000 virtual systems, each with its own OS (excluding Windows)

IBM has already started offering a series of pre-built servers based on this new computing solution, although, predictably, their prices are not exactly among the most concerned with end-user budget. The entry-level IBM Power 750 Express, for instance, brings the benefits of up to 32 parallel tasks but has a price tag of no less than $34,000. But even at this price, it can barely compare with the high-tier Power 780, which can use up to 64 Power7 cores. - softpedia.com

Technology / Chrome netbook in 2010 from Samsung
February 15, 2010, 12:05:57 PM
Netbooks are still set to see a significant growth during 2010 and PC vendors are naturally keeping an eye on this market, seeing as how netbook sales were one of the main factors behind the more favorable general marketing performance of 2009, compared to 2008. One element that is expected to help keep interest in netbooks high is Google's Chrome OS. Recently, Samsung reportedly stated that, like Acer, it would be bringing its own Chrome netbook in 2010.

Acer's plans to bring out a Chrome OS netbook in the third quarter were reportedly confirmed in late January. The same report estimated that the company's total shipments of the netbook, for 2010, would amount to 12 to 15 million. This marketing performance, however, may be harder to achieve now that Samsung is gearing up to launch its own device.

Channel News reveals that the company will introduce the netbook later this year, according to Phil Newton, head of Samsung IT Australia. Among the specs mentioned in the report were 2GB of memory, a 10.1-inch display, 3G, WiFi and a storage space of at least 64GB. The device would supposedly be able to run for up to 12 hours on a single battery charge. - source: softpedia.com

Technology / Dual-screen Laptop: Multi-monitor Support
February 15, 2010, 12:04:02 PM
Normally, when looking to increase productivity by maximizing workspace, business users turn to desktop computers with support for multiple monitors, as they can provide better multitasking. One company, however, feels that multi-monitor support should not be confined to the desktop alone. As such, GScreen has been developing a laptop whose two screens aim to provide users with the increased workspace they need. The notebook is dubbed the SpaceBook 17 and comes with two 17.3-inch screens.

The company initially planned for the SpaceBook to have two screens of only 15.4 inches but decided to delay the device in order to switch to the larger LED-backlit displays. The developers did not limit themselves to this, as they also updated the specifications.

The SpaceBook 17 is powered by an Intel Core i7- 620M CPU with 4M Cache and a frequency of 2.66 Ghz. The system also has 4GB DDR3 memory, up to 500GB of storage and the 1GB NVIDIA GeForce GTS 150M GPU for graphics. The device will come with a DVD unit, either a DVD dual (DVD +/-rw) or a super multi (DVD +/-rw + DVD- RAM).

As far as connectivity goes, the SpaceBook 17 features 802. 11b/g/n wireless and Bluetooh 2.1+EDR. The laptop also includes a six-in-one card reader, three USB ports, an eSATA port, FireWire, RJ45 LAN (w/ metal shielding), an RJ11 modem connector, HDMI and a nine-cell battery. The I/O options include jacks for headphones and mic. - source: softpedia.com

Technology / Hynix Semiconductor Needs Buyer
February 15, 2010, 12:02:37 PM
The group of nine financial institutions that hold the controlling stake for Hynix Semiconductor, for the third time, had received no letters of intent from possible purchasers when they closed bids, even though the closing date was extended by two weeks. This development comes even though Hynix is the second largest maker of DRAM (dynamic random access memory) and despite the strong demand for PCs and electronics that has caused DRAM prices to rise.

Early this year, the government of the United Arab Emirates expressed their interest in acquiring a stake in Hynix. Such a purchase would help the UAE develop its own semiconductor industry, considering that Abu Dhabi already controls Globalfoundries, the contract maker of semiconductors currently ranked third worldwide. Abu Dhabi even has a large stake in Advanced Micro Devices, second largest x86 processor supplier worldwide. Nevertheless, the bids closed without any offers, which will likely prompt lenders to sell a part of their combined 28% stake to institutional investors, in portions.

Korea Exchange Bank said that one of the options that the creditors are reviewing implies, reports Bloomberg, a block of sales of some shares, but the group will still remain open to bids from interested parties. - source: softpedia.com

Companies have been supplying the graphics market segment with a steady flow of DirectX 11-capable cards from the ATI Radeon 5xxx series. Even in such conditions, market rumors and reports seem to indicate that hardware makers are, as always, working on more products than they care to say. One of the more recent occurrences was the emergence of photos that showed two graphics cards ASUS is reportedly working on. Dubbed the HD 5870 TOP and HD 5850 DirectCu, the two adapters are expected to have higher clocks and better cooling than the stock models.

These two graphics adapters are not the only models set to come from the company. ASUS has already been revealed to be preparing an extra HD 5870 card, with a memory of no less than 2GB GDDR5, a GPU clock of 900MHz and an interface of 256 bits. However, while the rumors dealing with this Republic of Gamers Matrix HD 5870 were more generous when it came to specs, the same cannot be said here. All that is more or less known of the HD 5870 TOP and HD 5850 DirectCu is what reasonable speculation can point towards. - softpedia.com

Technology / Better Performance for Gaming
February 15, 2010, 11:44:35 AM
As Advanced Micro Devices, Intel and NVIDIA keep pushing their many CPUs and GPUs on the market, more and better possibilities for high-performance gaming appear. It is quite known that the gaming segment, and its continuously growing demand for better performance and higher efficiency in processing and graphics, is one of the main driving forces behind the advancements in this field. In trying to provide such users with a high-performance gaming system, Digital Storm has introduced the Black|OPS desktop PC.

Aiming to provide its customers with the highest customizability possible, the company delivers users multiple combinations of technology from Intel, AMD and NVIDIA. Processors can be Core i5 or i7 Intel CPUs or chips from AMD's Phenom II x4 line. Concerning graphics capabilities, the company offers both AMD and NVIDIA options.

As far as the specifications are concerned, the Black|OPS will have at least 4GB of RAM and all models come with Digital Storm's Sub-Zero Liquid Cooling System. This cooling solution will ensure that the processor, video cards and chipset stay at working temperatures, even while PC sound output is reduced by the Noise Suppression Package. Furthermore, end-users may even overclock their rigs thanks to the TwisterBoost option. - source: softpedia.com

Health and Food / One Cause of Stroke
February 15, 2010, 11:39:59 AM
One Cause of Stroke

Swedish scientists from the Karolinska Institutet have recently determined that one of the primary causes behind a person's risk of stroke is the amount of antibodies he or she has inside their bodies. The new investigation could also carry considerable implications in the fight against the dangerous condition called arteriosclerosis, which sees the blood vessels inside the body impaired, and unable to properly ensure a steady blood flow. Using the new data, investigators hope to soon be able to develop a new class of vaccines that could have the ability to mobilize the entire immune system, so that the risk of stroke is considerably lowered, AlphaGalileo reports.

Professor Johan Frostegard, the leader of the Swedish research group, has already demonstrated in previous researches that immune systems rich in the antibody anti-PC were linked to reduced risks of stroke. This particular type of antibody has been directly linked to less chances of developing arteriosclerosis as well. This medical condition is one of the primary causes of thrombosis (the formation of blood clots), which in turn lead to myocardial infarction. People suffering from this condition basically suffer from cramps in the muscle of their heart.

“We're now examining the possibility of developing new immunological treatments for arteriosclerosis and stroke, either in the form of a vaccine to stimulate the immune defense or immunization through the injection of antibodies,” Frostegard explains. - source: softpedia.com

Science and Research / Sensor Sensitivity
February 15, 2010, 11:30:25 AM
Researchers at the US Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) have recently been able to exploit a phenomenon that has for a long time stopped electronics manufacturers from doing what they do best in order to create a new class of advanced chemical and biological sensors. The new instrument is capable of detecting extremely small amounts of various compounds in the air, and acts pretty much like a dog's sniffer. The innovation was produced in the laboratory of researcher Panos Datskos, who is the leader of the current efforts.

“While the research community has been avoiding the nonlinearity associated with the nanoscale mechanical oscillators, we are embracing it. In the end, we hope to have a device capable of detecting incredibly small amounts of explosives compared to today's chemical sensors,” explains ORNL Materials Sciences Division Center for Nanophase member Nickolay Lavrik, who was also the co-developer of the new system. The goal here is to make detecting explosives, biological agents and narcotics faster and more efficiently than ever before, the team says. - source: softpedia.com

Showbiz & Celebrity / More Babies for Jennifer Lopez
February 15, 2010, 11:27:35 AM
Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony tried hard to get pregnant, but the long wait was worth it, the singer has repeatedly said in various interviews after giving birth to twins. Of course, that’s not to say that she wouldn’t want to expand her family even more, as JLo admits to Entertainment Tonight that she would love to have more babies, even if she has no concrete plans for that just yet.

The singer and actress is now promoting the romantic comedy “The Back-up Plan,” where she plays a woman who turns to IVF in order to have a baby, having come to the conclusion that Mr. Right would never appear in her life. Making plans in this sense is never a good idea, Lopez explains to ET, adding that she would personally love it if she and Marc were to be blessed with one or more children. However, she doesn’t want to plan for it because that’s not how things work, to put it simply.

“I want more babies,” Lopez tells ET when asked about whether she could identify in any way with the character she plays in the much-mediated romcom. “That's the whole subject of the movie â€" you can't plan your life. As much as you would like to say, ‘This is what I want to do and this is how I want to do it, and by this time and it's all going to be perfect,'’that's not really life, you know? That's not really how it is. You have to just be willing to go with what happens,” the star says. - source: softpedia.com

One of the hottest films right now is undoubtedly the star-studded romantic comedy “Valentine’s Day,” directed by Garry Marshall and starring anyone and everyone from Ashton Kutcher and Jessica Biel to reported former sweethearts Taylor Lautner and Taylor Swift. The film also includes an extended cameo from Julia Roberts, arguably one of the highest paid actresses in Hollywood: and that she is, the New York Mag Vulture says, having received no less than $3 million for her small part.

The film aims to present how people react to Valentine’s Day, this now-international lovefest. This explains the star-studded cast, which was apparently seen by the producers and the movie studio as a guaranteed recipe for success, otherwise one could hardly explain the math the Post came up with. Julia Roberts got about $500,000 per minute of screen time, which means about $11,952 for each word she utters in front of the camera. As if this wasn’t enough, Roberts also got 3 percent of total grossing under her contract for her part of about 6 minutes on film, estimates say.

“New Line Cinema paid Roberts $3 million up front against 3 percent of the gross for what is little more than an extended cameo. That comes out to an astonishing $8,333 per second of screen time, or roughly $500,000 a minute. Verbally, it's a minimum of $11,952 per spoken word,” the publication states. However, this could very well not be money down the drain. “Yet even that may turn out to be a bargain, considering the Pretty Woman imprimatur: That movie is practically a religious icon to any female who's ever wept love-lorn into a pint of Ben & Jerry's while wearing sweatpants, cursing men, and pantomiming other stereotypically estrogen-saturated chestnuts gleaned from years of watching movies much like Valentine's Day. Eleven years ago, when Roberts and Marshall reteamed for Runaway Bride (albeit with Richard Gere, too), it grossed $309 million worldwide,” NY Mag further writes. - softpedia.com

Science and Research / Elephants Don't Run Actually
February 15, 2010, 10:30:37 AM
Scientists propose that large elephants may not be running, regardless of how fast they appear to be moving. A series of investigations has made experts consider the possibility that the mammals may actually be walking very fast, rather than running in the strictest sense of the word. The new research appears to indicate that an elephant which is rushing actually walks and runs at the same time. Cataloging precisely what it does is very difficult, because these creatures tend to break all rules of how animals should move, ScienceNow reports.

Biologists explain that four-legged vertebrates have the tendency to exhibit visible differences between the strides they employ when walking and running. When moving for high speeds, they take all their four feet off the ground at the same time. This is absolutely false for elephants. The animals indeed take faster and longer steps, as any other creature running, but they never take all of their four feet off the ground at the same time. Experts hypothesize that this is an adaptation for distributing their massive weight on the ground in as many points as possible while not sacrificing speed.

Biomechanics expert Norman Heglund, from the Catholic University of Louvain, in Belgium, says that there are other factors to consider as well, in determining whether elephants run or not. He adds that changing strides also produces a number of changes in how other four-legged creatures move. The expert mentions that knees flexing different than usual cause a change in their centers of gravity, as well as in the maximum amount of force they can exert on the ground when pushing themselves against it. In smaller animals and in humans, measuring these changes is relatively easy, for the simple fact that we are lighter. But elephants weigh a few tons, so studying it like this is very difficult. - source: softpedia.com

Scientists at the University of Pennsylvania (UP) have recently taken a major step in the quest to develop devices that are capable of transforming light into electricity. They managed to devise an array of nanoscale gold molecules able to trigger the transduction of optical radiation into electrical current. The new system works in a manner similar to that employed inside photovoltaic solar cells, the team reveals. The new finding could have a wide range of applications in many fields of science, but especially in the electronics industry.

Additionally, the group reveals, the devices could be used to induce and project electrical current in molecules. This is made possible by the fact that the molecule array responds to electromagnetic waves by producing surface plasmons. These particles can be induced in devices such as biosensors, and they have the potential to allow for very efficient energy harvesting for powering up other nanoscale devices. Circuits that power themselves, and require only light to work, may also become possible, if the technology is developed and improved even further.

Future nanoscale optoelectronic products, such as “resonant” optical antennae, could also become possible with additional advancements in this field of research. “If the efficiency of the system could be scaled up without any additional, unforeseen limitations, we could conceivably manufacture a one-amp, one-volt sample the diameter of a human hair and an inch long,” says UP professor of materials science Dawn Bonnell, who is also the director of the university's Nano/Bio Interface Center. Details of the investigation appear in the latest issue of the respected scientific journal ACS Nano. - source: softpedia.org

Science and Research / Level of Nicotine Addiction
February 15, 2010, 10:27:52 AM
Though the level of nicotine addiction in the general population has somewhat decreased over the past decade, some groups have been left behind, in the sense that authorities failed to comprehend the specific factors that dictate their ability to quit smoking or not. These divisions of the population include those from minorities and various ethnic groups, as well as people suffering from psychiatric disorders, e! Science News reports. Details of this research appear in the latest issue of the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, a publication of the American Psychological Association (APA).

Psychologists have reported over the past few months increased success rates â€" when reported to the general trend â€" in promoting a lower rate of nicotine addiction within these groups. This was done by tailoring existing therapies and prevention programs to the specific needs of these individuals, who therefore saw it easier to relate and find help in their effort to quit smoking. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that, after a ten-year-long steady decline in smoking rates, the percentage of smokers in the nation increased from 19.8 to 20.6 between 2007 and 2008.

“One of the reasons smoking rates have remained stagnant is because these underserved groups of smokers have not been adequately targeted by research and treatment,” Brown University Medical School Centers for Behavioral and Preventive Medicine expert Belinda Borrelli, PhD, says. She adds that people most at risk of being overlooked by current approaches aimed at curbing smoking rates are those that smoke most, that have less access to treatments, and also those who, unwillingly or not, are constantly excluded from long-term treatment trials. It was additionally discovered in previous studies that people suffering from psychiatric disorders need therapies that are tailored to their specific conditions. - source: softpedia.org

In the days leading to Endeavor catching up with the International Space Station (ISS) in low-Earth orbit, astronauts aboard the orbital facility kept a close eye on how the shuttle was fairing in its pursuit. As such, they were able to capture one of the most amazing pictures available of the spacecraft, a unique view that sees Endeavor backdropped by our planet's horizon line. Against strange shades of blue, orange, brown and black, the spacecraft appears as a silhouette, perfectly contoured against its surroundings, Space reports.

Usually, a shuttle is a sight to behold, and one that is considerably different from a black shape on a more luminous horizon. It is gleaming white, with a dark, ominous-looking underbelly covered in small ceramic tiles. These protect it from the fiery temperatures, reaching thousands of degrees that form around the spacecraft as it reenters the Earth's atmosphere. Its cargo bay is the size of a bus, and the space plane can carry nearly 20 tons of supplies and other equipment to the ISS in one go. So, one might argue, it's anything but small.

The new image reveals all the major features of the shuttle, including its thrusters, wings and nose. They are very clear against the background, even if both Endeavor and the ISS were moving very fast in their orbits. The picture will be added to the existing galleries, which also feature some amazing shots of shuttles passing the Sun, or in other breathtaking situations. Some time last year, even an amateur astronomer was able to capture a view of a shuttle crossing the Sun, while affixed to the ISS, using nothing more than commercially available equipment, and conducting the observations from his backyard. - source: softpedia.com

General Topic / Extremely Long Oceanic Waves
February 15, 2010, 10:09:33 AM
Marine researchers at the University of California in San Diego's (UCSD) Scripps Institution of Oceanography propose in a new study that some of the collapse events that affected the Antarctic ice sheet in 2009 may have been triggered by extremely long oceanic waves. Lead scientists Peter Bromirski says that the waves form alongside the Pacific coasts of the Americas, and that they impact the Southern Continent with immense strength, potentially contributing to their catastrophic decline.

The main culprit that triggers this correlation, the expert states, are storms taking place above the North Pacific. They generate large waves that slam into the coasts of North and South America, where they are transformed into what are known as “infragravity waves.” These are capable of traveling vast distances, and can make their way to Antarctic coasts. Once here, they slam into water-based ice sheets with tremendous force, adding to the effects of global warming and warming oceanic water to destabilize the region, and cause more and more ice to fall into the sea.

Infragravity waves “may be a key mechanical agent that contributes to the production and/or expansion of the pre-existing crevasse fields on ice shelves,” the expert says. He conducted the investigation with funding from the California Department of Boating and Waterways, and the US National Science Foundation (NSF). Coauthors of the study include Olga Sergienko, from the Princeton University and Douglas MacAyeal, from the University of Chicago. Details of the work appear in the latest issue of the respected scientific journal Geophysical Research Letters. - source: softpedia.com

General Topic / What is Climate Tipping Point?
February 15, 2010, 10:07:38 AM
The climate “tipping point” is a concept used by scientists to denote a certain moment in time when the extent of the damage we are inflicting on the environment will become so severe that no mitigation actions will ever manage to revert the harm. According to a new investigation, conducted by researchers at the University of California in Davis (UCD), this moment will occur without any prior warning, much to the despair of scientists who want to determine when it will happen, so that they can inform policymakers, and demand more urgent action. The work was conducted by UCSD theoretical ecologist, and top ecological forecaster Alan Hastings.

“Many scientists are looking for the warning signs that herald sudden changes in natural systems, in hopes of forestalling those changes, or improving our preparations for them. Our new study found, unfortunately, that regime shifts with potentially large consequences can happen without warning â€" systems can 'tip' precipitously. This means that some effects of global climate change on ecosystems can be seen only once the effects are dramatic. By that point returning the system to a desirable state will be difficult, if not impossible,” the scientist says.

The investigation could in the near future be used for other applications as well, in the sense that, although it focuses on models from ecology, it could also be of use to researchers analyzing other complex systems. According to scientists, some of these systems may include the effects of human dynamics on nature (such as excessive fishing), as well the situation and future of financial markets. The new research basically consisted of creating a mathematical model to predict the climate tipping point. Hastings is renowned around the globe for using such models in understanding changes in nature. - source: softpedia.com

Love Talk / Valentine's Day In the Past
February 15, 2010, 09:45:47 AM
When people think about Valentine's Day today, they most likely imagine small cards that convey the warmest feelings of love, focused on the positive aspects of this strong human emotion. But historians argue that people living in Ancient Rome were not as likely to focus on the same aspects. Conversely, they were highly likely to bring out the negative, painful aspects of love in the letters they sent to their loved ones, LiveScience reports. There was no Valentine's Day in the sense we understand it today, but men sent love letters to women, usually married, as well as to other men, on occasions.

Flattery and gratitude were among the last feelings on Roman men's minds when it came to things they thought about writing in their letters. “Unlike what you see in contemporary stores where we have valentines that are all clouds and dreamy and romantic, the Romans had a very different kind of take on love. It's not something that is a good feeling usually; it's something that torments you,” says Hamilton College professor of classics Barbara Gold. She bases her statements on analyses she conducted on old love poems dating back to between the first century BC and the first century AD.

Most of these writings argued that love is an emotion that makes the writer “see double,” and swells up his tongue. They also called love a plague. “You would never go out today and find a valentine that says 'You're like a plague, you set my bone marrow on fire',” Gold adds. These differences are caused by the way in which modern and ancient people looked at love. In Ancient Rome, men or women were rarely expected to love their spouses. “Marriages were arranged, and all about wealth and status and power and keeping the family line going. There never would have been a marriage for the Romans that was based on any kind of [other] attraction,” the expert writes. - source: softpedia.com
