February 16, 2015, 04:27:03 PM
Libya has slid into chaos after longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown and killed three years ago, as interim authorities failed to confront powerful militias which fought to oust the authoritarian leader.

Taking advantage of the chaos, ISIL has carried out a string of deadly attacks.
The group has released several propaganda videos boasting vows of allegiance from fighters in the country. In October, Ansar al-Sharia in Derna pledged allegiance to ISIL.

Libya's embattled parliament, which is locked in a conflict with militias, expressed its condolences in a statement and called on the world to "show solidarity with Libya" against ISIL.

The UN's mission in Libya called for the group's actions to be "rejected and denounced by all Libyans".

A scrolling caption in the video referred to the hostages as "People of the cross, followers of the hostile Egyptian Church".

Speaking in English, a fighter from the group said the beheadings were revenge for "Muslim women persecuted by Coptic crusaders in Egypt".

Sunday's video comes less than two weeks after ISIL released a video showing the burning alive of a Jordanian pilot it captured after his plane went down in Syria in December.

ISIL video shows Christian Egyptians beheaded in Libya
16 Feb 2015 06:32 GMT | War & Conflict, Middle East, Libya, ISIL

Fighters pledging allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) have released a video purporting to show the killing of 21 Egyptian Coptic Christians kidnapped in Libya.

The Egyptian government and the Coptic Church confirmed the authenticity of the footage, released on Sunday.
It showed the Egyptian workers, all wearing orange jump suits, being beheaded near a waterfront said to be located in the Libyan province of Tripoli.

The men were seized in two attacks in December and January from the coastal town of Sirte in eastern Libya.
Al-Azhar stresses that such barbaric action has nothing to do with any religion or human values.

"Egypt reserves the right to respond in a suitable way and time to punish these murderers," Sisi said in a televised speech.

Later, state television reported that Egypt's military had bombed ISIL targets in Libya at dawn on Monday.
The Coptic Orthodox Church issued a statement saying it was "confident" the killers would be brought to justice.

Al-Azhar, the prestigious Cairo-based seat of Islamic learning, denounced the "barbaric" killings.

"Al-Azhar stresses that such barbaric action has nothing to do with any religion or human values," it said in a statement.

An inexpensive protein source, one egg can already provide 10 per cent of the daily protein requirement. A good source of antioxidants â€" lutein and zeaxanthine, it can help lower the risk of age-related eye disorders. Moreover, it contains choline, a B vitamin-like molecule responsible for cardiovascular and brain functions.

The consumers’ dereliction of the egg yolk should be stopped because compared to the egg white, it contains 100 percent of the fat-soluble vitamins(A,D,E, and K) and 90 percent of the calcium, iron, phosphorus, zinc, thiamin, folate, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12. Though egg white is higher in protein and riboflavin, it would still be best to eat the whole egg to be able to get the best of both worlds â€" unless you’re an athlete preparing for an event.

There also is no connection between the nutritive value of the egg and its shell color.

An egg is actually good for one’s health when eaten in moderation. Though studies that daily consumption (one per day) is not linked to heart disease and stroke, a recent report published online in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, concluded that it increases the chance of developing type-2 diabetes.

A person at risk; or currently diagnosed with diabetes, stroke, and heart disease should be more cautious in eating eggs. A diabetic person should limit egg yolk intake to 3-4 times per week. In the incidence of stroke, egg yolk consumption should be stopped. A healthy individual may eat more, but with other food sources available, variation is encouraged.

To optimize the benefits from eggs, go organic. Organic eggs have more omega-3 and nutrients. Poaching and boiling are also better methods of cooking, because they do not require the use of oil, and do less damage in the egg’s nutritive value.

The nature of science has always been dynamic. The facts of today may be myths of tomorrow and the myths of today may one day be facts. It’s wise to always read and EGG-xplore.

Like the egg, cholesterol also suffers the same fate. It has been demonized for many decades to the detriment of the health of the multitude. Little do people know that cholesterol is one of the most important nutrients in the body. Without cholesterol, there is no life, for it is a part of every cell membrane and is required for the production of steroid hormones, Vitamin D, and bile acids responsible for fat digestion.

Cholesterol does not deserve the bad reputation and there is no reason to fear eggs.

Eating eggs does not cause heart diseases and stroke to healthy people. A study in Harvard of nearly 120,000 men and women, found no correlation between egg consumption â€" one per day â€" and heart disease, except in diabetics.

The Japanese consumes an average of 334 eggs per person per year as of 2008. Yet, they have lower levels of blood cholesterol and rates of cardiovascular mortality as compared to other developed countries.

On the other hand, Filipinos only consume 14 grams of egg per day, but diseases of the heart ranked number One in the Philippines, as the leading cause of mortality in 2009. This difference is due to the fact that the Japanese diet is low in total fat and saturated fat, while the Filipino diet is the opposite.

Busting the myth about egg-cholesterol connection

Eggs, the breakfast superstar

IN a time where scientific research findings contradict each other, people do not know what to believe anymore. Are eggs good for the health, bad, or maybe a little of both?

The reason why eggs have gained such dubious reputation is cholesterol. An egg yolk contains 214-220 mg of cholesterol. The American Heart Association recommends a limit of 300 mg per day. Because it’s the yolk that contains the cholesterol, a lot of people have been eating the egg whites alone â€" and made their lives miserable.

Most studies concluded that cholesterol from the diet has little, if any, effect on the level of cholesterol in the blood. In fact, the body produces 1000 mg of cholesterol per day. When a person consumes too much cholesterol, the body will slow down its production. And when less cholesterol is consumed, the body will produce more. The bigger factors here are genetics, lifestyle, stress, and individual differences.

Bohol radio anchor shot dead
By Mike Frialde (philstar.com) | Updated February 14, 2015 - 4:59pm

Investigators are exploring the angle that Bohol-based radio broadcaster Maurito Lim was attacked due to his work as broadcaster.

MANILA, Philippines â€" A radio broadcaster in Tagbilaran City, Bohol, died yesterday afternoon after being shot by a lone gunman.

Chief Inspector George Vale of the Tagbilaran City Police said Maurito Lim, 71, had just alighted from his Isuzu Crosswind sports utility vehicle at about 11 a.m. and was about to enter the office of the dyRD “Radyo Asenso” radio station at B. Inting Street when the gunman, riding a blue motorcycle, appeared.

Police said the gunman followed Lim from behind and shot him once with a caliber .45 caliber pistol at close range.

According to police, the bullet hit Lim's left jaw and exit through his right face.

The suspect then fled on his motorcycle after the shooting.

Lim was rushed to the Gallares Hospital in Tagbilaran City where he underwent emergency surgery but died at 1:15 p.m.

While investigators have yet to determine the motive behind the attack, they are looking at the possibility the killing was related to his job as a radio anchorman.

Police said Lim, an engineer who had previously worked with the National Power Corporation (Napocor) was critical of local officials before the attack.

(UPDATE - 3:00 p.m.) MANILA, Philippines -- A broadcaster in Bohol province who had been lambasting politicians with alleged links to illicit drug dealing was murdered Saturday, Leo Udtuhan, vice chairman of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines chapter in the Central Visayas city, informed the group's main office in Manila.

Engineer Maurito Lim was about to alight from his car in front of station dyRD in Tagbilaran City when a lone gunman on board a motorcycle shot him at around 10:35 a.m., Udtuhan said.

Reports earlier indicated that Lim was hit in the left jaw, with the bullet exiting on the other side of his face.

Lim, who anchored the daily program "Chairman Mao On Board," was rushed to the Governor Celestino Gallares Memorial Hospital, across the street from the station, but was pronounced dead around 1:15 p.m., Udtuhan said.

The broadcaster is the second journalist killed in Tagbilaran, the 172nd since 1986, and the 34th under the administration of President Aquino.

MANILA -- A radio broadcaster was shot dead by a still unidentified suspect in Bohol on Saturday morning, police said.

Superintendent Joie Pacito Yape, spokesperson of Bohol provincial police, identified the victim as Engr. Maurito Lim, a broadcaster for the local radio station dyRD in Tagbilaran City.

Yape said the victim was slain by a lone attacker around 10:45 a.m. outside the radio station in Tagbilaran City, Bohol.

A report by the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) said Lim was about to alight from his car when a lone gunman onboard a motorcycle shot him. Reports said Lim was hit in the left jaw, the bullet exiting on the other side of his face.

"The said suspect drove away after the incident... heading towards north direction," said Yape.

Yape said responding members of the local emergency group Tarsier 117 brought Lim to a hospital where the victim died around 1:15 p.m.

NUJP-Tagbilaran chapter vice chairman Leo Udtuhan said Lim anchored the daily public affairs program "Chairman Mao On Board," which is critical of local officials linked to the illegal drug trade.

Manhunt operation and investigation on the incident was ongoing, said Yape.

Lim's killing followed that of a female tabloid reporter who was slain by unknown suspects in Balanga, Bataan last month.

Lim was the second journalist killed in Tagbilaran, according to NUJP. (VR/Sunnex)

What if you could check into a hotel, have your luggage carried to your room and order a coffee â€" all with help from a team of robots?

A new hotel at a theme park in Nagasaki, Japan, hopes to make that dream a reality. The Henn-na Hotel (whose name means "strange hotel") will be partially staffed by androids that work as reception attendants, robot waiters, cleaning staff and a cloakroom attendant, The Telegraph reported.

Developed by Japan's Osaka University and manufactured by the Japanese robotics company Kokoro, many of the "Actroid" robots resemble a young Japanese woman. The bots will be able to speak Japanese, Chinese, Korean and English, make hand gestures, and pull off the somewhat creepy feat of mimicking eye movements, according to The Telegraph.

The android-staffed hotel will be part of a theme park called Huis Ten Bosch, which is modeled after a typical Dutch town. Hotel guests will be able to access their rooms using facial recognition software instead of keys, if they choose.

"We'd like to draw visitors to this setting surrounded by nature by establishing a smart hotel, which could be something we could spread through Japan and the world, a spokeswoman for Huis Ten Bosch told The Telegraph.

If the robot hotel is a success, another one may be opened in 2016, the spokeswoman added.
Room rates at the Henn-na Hotel will start at about $60 U.S. (7,000 yen), but will likely remain well below the rates for the park's other hotels, which start at around $170 to $255 (20,000 to 30,000 yen). The use of robots and renewable energy will help the hotel keep its operating costs down, The Telegraph reported.

For those Luddites who prefer a human touch, the hotel will also employ 10 human staff members.

Science and Research / Plasma Rainstorms On The Sun
February 14, 2015, 09:33:15 AM
The Sun has rainstorms with high winds that are surprisingly similar in some ways to the storms we experience here on Earth. But on the Sun, the rain is composed of plasma, ionized gas that falls from the corona to the surface at 200,000 kilometers (125,000 mi) per hour. The corona surrounds the Sun like an outer atmosphere. But when it rains from the corona, it truly pours. Each droplet is as large as Ireland, and there are thousands of droplets in a coronal rain shower.

Scientists have known about this plasma rain for about 40 years. But until they received detailed data from modern satellites and observatories, they couldn’t explain why it happened.

This is where the parallels to Earth-based weather become striking. Under the right conditions, the Sun’s clouds of dense, hot plasma will cool, condensing until they fall to the surface as coronal raindrops.

There’s also a process of rapid evaporation that forms clouds. But on the Sun, the powerful explosions of solar flares cause the evaporation. Telescopic images show that solar flares, radiation bursts on the surface of the Sun, precede solar rainstorms. Scientists believe that an unusually fast drop in temperature then causes coronal gas to morph into solar raindrops. -- http://listverse.com/

From reality TV star to supermodel, the last year has seen Kendall Jenner’s career going from strength to strength becoming one of the most sought after models in the industry.

Last month Kendall walked the Chanel couture runway but her latest shoot was a lot more of a sexy affair.

Showing off her killer figure in a series out cut-out swimsuits, Kendall proved her modelling credentials, showing she can even work with animals… er, a monkey to be precise (just another day at the office then!).

There comes a time in every model's career when she will have to pose with an animal.

And that day has come for Kendall Jenner, who appears in the March issue of Allure magazine looking incredibly stunning in a series of cut-out and revealing swimsuits... in the company of a monkey.

However, thanks to her natural prowess as a model, the 19-year-old doesn't let the cute Capuchin steal her shine.

"I think of the OFC as the workshop of economic value, where, in this case, you have the value of the gamble and the value of the information--the raw materials--but they haven't yet been combined," said Hayden. "This study seems to have revealed that the mixing of the raw materials happens somewhere between the OFC and the dopamine system. We now have two points in the circuit."

"One of the reasons this research is important," Hayden said, "is because this basic desire for information turns out to be something that's really corrupted in people with anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and addiction, for example."

"We think that by understanding these basic circuits in monkeys we may gain insights that 10 to15 years down the road may lead to new treatments for these psychiatric diseases," Hayden concluded.

Rewarding Curiosity

According to the researchers, their study helps to build a broader understanding for how curiosity--information seeking--is processed and rewarded in the brain.

Like monkeys, when curious we evaluate what we'd be willing to pay--or give up--to satisfy our curiosity, Hayden said. And in the case of gambling, there is also the potential of a prize to factor in. So when we make a choice, it depends on the sum of those two things: the gamble (the money you might win), and the value of finding out. And those two things need to be combined in order to make decisions about that gamble.

Earlier work suggests that these components are combined in the brain's dopamine system. This study looks at that one step earlier in the process, in a region of the brain called the Orbitofrontal cortex, or OFC.
#9537
"When it's simply a choice between getting the information earlier or not, the monkeys show a pretty strong preference for getting it earlier. But what we really wanted to do is quantify this preference," said first author and lead researcher Tommy Blanchard, a Ph.D. candidate in Hayden's lab.

In the video gambling experiments, graduated colored columns illustrated the amount of water that could be won. The monkeys were more curious about the gambles when the stakes--or columns--were higher.

The researchers found the monkeys not only consistently selected the gamble that informed them if they picked a winner right away, but they were also willing to select that option when the winnings were up to 25 percent less than the gamble that required them to wait for the results. "One way to think about this is that this is the amount of water the monkeys were willing to pay for the information about if they made the correct choice," explained Blanchard.

"That 25 percent was really surprising to us--that's pretty big," Hayden said. "These monkeys really, really want that information, and they do these gambling tasks repeatedly and never get bored of them--it's intrinsically motivated."
#9538
The study, by researchers at the University of Rochester and Columbia University, shows that rhesus macaques have such robust curiosity that they are willing to give up a surprisingly large portion of a potential prize in order to quickly find out if they selected the winning option at a game of chance.

"It's like buying a lottery ticket that you can scratch off and find out if you win immediately, or you can buy one that has a drawing after the evening news," explained Benjamin Hayden, co-senior author of the study and professor in brain and cognitive sciences at the University of Rochester. "Regardless, you won't get the money any more quickly, or in the case of the monkeys, they won't get the squirt of water any sooner. They will just find out if they selected the winning option."

In the study published in Neuron, monkeys were presented with a video gambling task in which they consistently chose to learn in advance if they picked the winning option. The monkeys did not receive their prize any sooner, which was a measure of juice or water; they were simply informed immediately if they selected a winner.

Summary: Monkeys are notoriously curious, and new research has quantified just how eager they are to gain new information, even if there are not immediate benefits. The findings offer insights into how a certain part of the brain shared by monkeys and humans plays a role in decision making, and perhaps even in some disorders and addictions in humans.

How to make the best of a bad situation
by Michelle Maros

Happy Sunday! We are almost to the end of January, can you believe how fast time flies? Now that we are fully out of the holiday swing and back into the grind of regular life, we may start to feel a little down and dreary. The holidays bring up so many emotions, mainly positive ones, that when it’s all over, we’re left to feel a little depleted. It’s also common to feel dissatisfied with the regular to do’s of daily life. What I hear so often at this time of year is situational discontent in life. We’ve made resolutions, set goals, dreamed big; and now we are left with what we have right now, and for many of us, there’s a little bit of a let down that comes with that. We want our lives to change for the positive right now, but our minds get caught up in a tailspin of wishful thinking and unhappiness with what is. Whether you’re feeling blue about a relationship, a job, your home, or your finances, I promise you there is always some sort of silver lining. So this week, let’s talk about how to make the best of any situation you may be going through. Check out some tips below to find ways to get through anything with grace and ease.

Be the light. No matter how dark a situation may be, first start by trying to bring light to it. If you have a terribly mean boss or some dysfunction in your family, try to bring forth change, by being the change you wish to see. Negative doesn’t cancel out negative, positive does. Try it out!

Be heard. So many times we stuff down our thoughts and opinions for fear of negative repercussions. Use your voice, stand up for yourself and be heard! Be thoughtful, respectful, and honest, and share your input to promote change.

Be proactive. What can you do right now to make the situation better? Go inward and search for meaningful solutions or quick fixes to give yourself a positive boost. This may also mean, start researching ways to exit the situation or finding an alternative answer.

Be protected. Know where you stand and create boundaries. How much are you willing to take before you make the ultimate change? It’s great to always know where you stand so that you’re clear when it’s time to move on.

Be ready. Just like it’s great to know what your limits are, it’s also great to be mindful and ready on when the timing is right to make that change. If you’re wanting a new career, start exploring what makes your heart sing so that when the time is right you can transition with ease. The same goes for any other situation you’re dealing with. Preparation is key.

I hope these tips help you with any challenging situations you may be facing. I do have one caveat here. These tips are for you in the notion that you or your loved ones aren’t in any harm or danger; they simply are for bumps in the road. If you find yourself in a scary situation beyond your control, please seek help and aid from sources you trust. Have a great week everyone! xoxo

Despite the ban on trade, some Europeans like British Major-General Horatio Gordon Robley (pictured below) were able to acquire an impressive collection of Mokomokai heads. These days, Mokomokai is no longer practiced among the Maori. However, there has been a marginally successful effort to return the remaining the heads to New Zealand.

By 1831, the Musket Wars ended mostly because of market saturation of rifles. At the same time, the British government officially banned the trade in Mokomokai, and New Zealand became a British colony.

During the Musket Wars, Mokomokai heads became very valuable commercial trade items. Many tribes traded their entire collection of Mokomokai for rifles. Some tribes raided their neighbors for more Mokomokai to trade, and others started tattooing the faces of slaves and prisoners to produce more Mokomokai.

From 1820 until 1831, different Maori tribes were trading with Europeans. One of the most heavily traded items were muskets. This led to an arms race among the Maori; whoever had guns had an advantage over their neighbors. This period of time is known as the Musket Wars.

With the arrival of Europeans in New Zealand during the early 1800s, the tradition of Mokomokai changed forever.

Mokomokai also played a role in tribal warfare. The heads of defeated chiefs were preserved in this way, and considered important trophies of war. They were also used to broker peace deals between different tribes, who would return or exchange Mokomokai.

The heads would then be kept by family members and brought out only for sacred religious ceremonies.

To prevent decomposition of the head, it was then boiled or steamed, before being smoked over an open fire and dried in the sun.

The brain and eyes were removed from the skull. All orifices were then sealed with flax fibre and gum.

What This Tribe In New Zealand Used To Trade With Europeans Is Pretty Disturbing
By Mike Cahill
http://www.viralnova.com/
NOVEMBER 17, 2014

The Maori people of New Zealand are some of the most interesting indigenous people on the planet. One of their more creepy traditions is called Mokomokai.

In Maori culture, Moko are traditional facial tattoos that signify rank within the tribe. These tattoos are also used to commemorate major events in the life of a tribe member. Here's where it gets weird...

When a person with Moko died, their head would often be preserved and become known as Mokomokai.
