I'm just happy to hear that for once Clinton said something "right" - at least from my perspective. The Catholic Church thinks the same way: "Babies are no mistakes!" They deserve to live just as all of us. I lived in the slums of San Jose Resettlement Area (1980) and Bagong Bayan, Dasmariñas, Cavite (1982), and 3 months in Tondo (during my regency year in 1980) and among fishermen of Cavite City during my activism and/or part of my apostolate days as a student. Yes, these are very poor.. and often, a product of irresponsible parenthood and/or arratic government/s... but nonetheless they are still human beings who deserve to live with dignity and respect. They are not all bad (although many are victims of circumstances). Many of them have been successful to this day. I'm still in contact with a few of them who now live in the U.S. (who are not poor anymore). Dili baya na sila tanan k******n, drug victims, etc. just because they are poor and basically come from families who have nothing. In other words, dili pod nato ma generalize as altogether "bad" by-products of poverty. Kung sinagoyon pagkasulti... on the contrary, daghan pod gikan sa mga maayong pamilya and affluent classes... pero ang mga kanahan man hinooy big time "k******n" "drug users" who are sitting in big offices and sometimes along the hallways of our capitol buildings or Congress, bwahahaha. If you know what I mean.  ;D

Kahibaw na siya Bay Gwaps. Yes, President Clinton is rich and powerful (wa na tay mahimo ana) but he knows the plight of the poor people being the President of the United States. And as a former President, he does a lot of charity works - maski palakero pana siya  before and probably still now (hahaha). He has also helped a lot of people both from Third World countries and locally... probably more than all of us here at TB combined. It's all perception... and presidents included, at times, they don't get the respect they deserved because of who they are. But they do, sometimes, that we don't know about. I for one can attest to his charity works because our community (my parish) is one of the many recipients of the Presidentd Bush & Clinton grant after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

But the reality (also) is....

Daghan gihapon gipang-anak o ipanganak out in some irresponsible ways...

Are these babies mistakes then?

This is where I repeat my stand, "NO, they are not!"

And they deserve this world or the Philippiens just as much (as I do).

Kini daw atong ipangutana sa atong kaugalingon...

Are you a mistake? Would the Philippines have been better off kung wa paka ipanganak sa imong ginikanan kay daghan na jamo ta?

If you are then I rest my case.

If not, is it right to say, "Kining kalibutan o Filipinas" para ra ba ni nato (nga gipanganak na or our kind nga maka afford mobuhi ug bata)? Or, even to say "Para ra ni sa atong mga anak? Apan dili para sa uban, who don't deserve to have babies or don't deserve to be babies? Tsk tsk tsk... tao nga naman.  ???

Balik napod ta ani sa issue sa "nipatong," "naglami" "wa tujoa" "nahubog ko ato na time" "kalimot pamutos" etc

VS

"self-control" "immoralidad " "family planning" etc, bwahahaha!!!  ;D

Sa mga niagi ani - labi na sa mga batan-on pa sila - kahibaw jud nga di ni lalim... basta uwag na ang "maghari." ;D Gawas na lang kung buotan jud na sila sa sila pay mga batan-on... then THEY have the right to form an opinion against this stand or statement!!!

If not, then you're no different from these who keep on making babies, or making mistakes!!!

On my part, padayon kos akong pagtoo nga "babies are no mistake."  :P

What a turnaround then for a Democrat President - a political group which espouses abortion - to finally say "babies are not liabilities, but assets for the country... and for the world in general."  ;)

The very elaborate and abeautiful Church of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona

VATICAN CITY, 7 NOV 2010 (VIS) - At 9 a .m. today the Pope travelled by popemobile from the archbishopric of Barcelona to the church of the Sagrada Familia, masterpiece of the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi.

Work on the building, which began in the year 1882, continues today thanks to donations from all over the world and is scheduled to come to an end in 2026. The final project is due to comprehend eighteen spires, twelve dedicated to the Apostles, four to the Evangelists, one to Jesus - at 170 metres the highest of all - and one to the Virgin Mary.

Before Mass, the Holy Father travelled around the outside of the church where thousands of people were gathered to greet him.

Benedict XVI entered the building by a secondary entrance where he was welcomed by the president of the Sagrada Familia foundation and by Jordi Bonet, head of the building project. He then went on to meet with King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain in the Museum Hall of the Sagrada Familia.

After his meeting with the monarchs, the Pope went to the sacristy to prepare for the celebration of Mass during which he consecrated the church and the altar of the Sagrada Familia.

Beginning his homily the Pope spoke in Catalan, greeting the King and Queen, and Cardinal Lluis Martinez Sistach, archbishop of Barcelona , and the other cardinals, bishops, priests, religious and lay people present.

Going on then to highlight how this day "marks an important step in a long history of hope, work and generosity that has gone on for more than a century", the Holy Father made special mention of the people whose efforts made it possible to build the church, especially "the man who was the soul and the artisan of this project, Antoni Gaudi, a creative architect and a practising Christian who kept the torch of his faith alight to the end of his life, a life lived in dignity and absolute austerity. This event is also in a certain sense the high point of the history of this land of Catalonia which, especially since the end of the nineteenth century, has given an abundance of saints and founders, martyrs and Christian poets. It is a history of holiness, artistic and poetic creation, born of the faith, which we gather and present to God today as an offering in this Eucharist".

Benedict XVI expressed his joy at the fact that "this shrine, since its beginnings, has had a special relationship with St. Joseph . I have been moved above all by Gaudi's confidence when, in the face of many difficulties, filled with trust in divine Providence , he would exclaim, ' St. Joseph will finish this church'. So it is significant that it is also being dedicated by a Pope whose baptismal name is Joseph".

This work of art "stands as a visible sign of the invisible God, to whose glory these spires rise like arrows pointing towards absolute light and to the One Who is Light, Height and Beauty itself. In this place, desired to unify that inspiration which came to him from the three books which nourished him as a man, as a believer and as an architect: the book of nature, the book of Sacred Scripture and the book of the liturgy. In this way he brought together the reality of the world and the history of salvation, as recounted in the Bible and made present in the liturgy. He made stones, trees and human life part of the church so that all creation might come together in praise of God, but at the same time he brought the sacred images outside so as to place before people the mystery of God revealed in the birth, passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

"In this way, he brilliantly helped to build our human consciousness, anchored in the world yet open to God, enlightened and sanctified by Christ. In this he accomplished one of the most important tasks of our times: overcoming the division between human consciousness and Christian consciousness, between living in this temporal world and being open to eternal life, between the beauty of things and God as beauty. Antoni Gaudi did this not with words but with stones, lines, planes, and points. Indeed, beauty is one of mankind's greatest needs; it is the root from which the branches of our peace and the fruits of our hope come forth. Beauty also reveals God because, like Him, a work of beauty is pure gratuity; it calls us to freedom and draws us away from selfishness".
"The Church of herself is nothing; she is called to be the sign and instrument of Christ, in pure docility to His authority and in total service to His mandate. The one Christ is the foundation of the one Church. He is the rock on which our faith is built. Building on this faith, let us strive together to show the world the face of God Who is love and the only one who can respond to our yearning for fulfilment. This is the great task before us: to show everyone that God is a God of peace not of violence, of freedom not of coercion, of harmony not of discord.

"In this sense", the Pope added, "I consider that the dedication of this church of the Sagrada Familia is an event of great importance, at a time in which man claims to be able to build his life without God, as if God had nothing to say to him. In this masterpiece, Gaudi shows us that God is the true measure of man; that the secret of authentic originality consists, as he himself said, in returning to one's origin which is God. Gaudi, by opening his spirit to God, was capable of creating in this city a space of beauty, faith and hope which leads man to an encounter with Him Who is truth and beauty itself. The architect expressed his sentiments in the following words: 'A church [is] the only thing worthy of representing the soul of a people, for religion is the most elevated reality in man'".

The Holy Father recalled then how "this church began as an initiative of the Association of the Friends of St. Joseph, who wanted to dedicate it to the Holy Family of Nazareth. The home formed by Jesus, Mary and Joseph has always been regarded as a school of love, prayer and work. The promoters of this church wanted to set before the world love, work and service lived in the presence of God, as the Holy Family lived them. Life has changed greatly and with it enormous progress has been made in the technical, social and cultural spheres. We cannot simply remain content with these advances. Alongside them, there also need to be moral advances, such as in care, protection and assistance to families, inasmuch as the generous and indissoluble love of a man and a woman is the effective context and foundation of human life in its gestation, birth, growth and natural end.

"Only where love and faithfulness are present can true freedom be born and endure. For this reason the Church advocates adequate economic and social means so that women may find in the home and at work their full development, that men and women who contract marriage and form a family receive decisive support from the state, that life of children may be defended as sacred and inviolable from the moment of their conception, that the reality of birth be given due respect and receive juridical, social and legislative support. For this reason the Church resists every form of denial of human life and gives its support to everything that would promote the natural order in the sphere of the institution of the family", said the Pope.

Benedict XVI asked God "that in the land of Catalonia new witnesses of holiness may rise up and flourish, and present to the world the great service that the Church can and must offer to humanity: to be an icon of divine beauty, a burning flame of charity, a path so that the world may believe in the One Whom God has sent".

"I implore the Lord of our lives that, from this altar, which will now be anointed with holy oil and upon which the sacrifice of the love of Christ will be consumed, there may be a flood of grace and charity upon the city of Barcelona and its people, and upon the whole world. May these fruitful waters fill with faith and apostolic vitality this archdiocesan Church, its pastors and its faithful".

The Pope concluded his homily in Catalan, saying "I wish to commend to the loving protection of the Mother of God, Mary Most Holy, April Rose, Mother of Mercy, all who enter here and all who in word or deed, in silence and prayer, have made this possible this marvel of architecture. May Our Lady present to her divine Son the joys and tribulations of all who come in the future to this sacred place so that here, as the Church prays when dedicating religious buildings, the poor may find mercy, the oppressed true freedom and all men may take on the dignity of the children of God. Amen".

At the end of Mass Cardinal Sistach read out the decree by which the Pope declares the church of the Sagrada Familia to be a minor basilica.

Following the Eucharistic celebration, the Holy Father left the building by the Portico of the Nativity and appeared on the terrace overlooking the square and adjoining street where thousands of faithful had followed the Mass on giant screens.

Before praying the Angelus , the Pope recalled how in the Brazilian city of Porto Alegre yesterday the beatification had taken place of Servant of God Maria Barbara of the Blessed Trinity, foundress of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. "May the deep faith and fervent charity with which she followed Christ", he said, "awaken in many the desire to devote their lives completely to the greater glory of God and the generous service of their brothers and sisters, especially the poorest and the most needy".

Referring then to the architect Antoni Gaudi, the Holy Father highlighted how, "through his work, he sought to bring the Gospel to everyone. For this reason, he conceived of the three porticos of the exterior of the church as a catechesis on the life of Jesus Christ, as a great Rosary, which is the prayer of ordinary people, a prayer in which are contemplated the joyful, sorrowful and glorious mysteries of our Lord. In collaboration with the parish priest Gil Pares, he also designed and financed from his own savings the creation of a school for the children of the workers and of the poorest families of the neighbourhood, which was at that time a outlying suburb of Barcelona . He brought concrete reality to the conviction, saying: 'The poor must always find a welcome in the Church, which is an expression of Christian charity'".

The Pope then travelled to the archbishopric of Barcelona , where he had luncN.

(saving my files was a first experience.  whew!  step by careful step, with a very meager computer familiarity, i felt like a blind man walking in a dark street at midnight.  then some kind of street brawl between drunks happened at around 3 a.m., and all the dogs barked.  last night was a scary night. :()

Are you sure you're not dreaming? Sleep-walking perhaps the dark alleys of "half dream-half-real" world of your past (and I don't mean last night's). ;D ;D

it's nice to know that cebu pop music festival adhered to its tradition.  ang nobel prize bitaw, wizened old men man ang judges.  i know perry aleonar is an accomplished violinist.

some negative feedbacks before point to the winning pieces as traditional, not pop, because the judges are already old.  ugh.  i guess all it needed was a clear understanding of the word 'pop'.   kun mga bata ibutang as judges, aray, rap man kaha ang modaog.  maoy gidangat.

That's a very good point, Isles. I didn't even see it that way. Thanks!!!  ;)

kinsay una, fr. chic, si fr. caberte o si fr. curso?  hehe, where boholanos go, music follows gyod diay.  bisag shepherds of the flock, or because they're shepherds of the flock; tokar ug kanta gyod gihapon. :)

Si. Fr. Caverte was the music teacher of Fr. Boboy Curso ug Bishop Ites Jimenez sa sila pay mga seminarista hehehe. Fr. Curso was our music teacher sa 1st year HS in 1972 after his ordination (one year lang), then Fr. Ites "Obispo" Jimenez followed in 1973 til I graduated in 1980. He stayed til 1981 and joined Pagadian Diocese handtud nahimo siyang obispo didto. Boy Biliran, TQ Solis, Arnold Zamora and hundred of us, including myself, sakop na aning duha (Curso and Jimenez) both of whom were protegees (students?) of Msgr. Rudy Villanueva. Among nadawat influence ra intawon ni Msgr. Rudy (adto man mi dagan sa Cebu mangayog kopya sa iyang mga bag-ong arrangements during those days), except those who proceeded to Cebu for their further studies, nga nahimo jud niyang sakop sa music.

Sa akong parte I was lucky to have Fr. Caverte as our kura in Catigbian in the late 70s for many many years. He was the best basketball player I've ever met, kay wa man siya mag kanta2x or tukar2x when he was in Catigbian. Di ba kaha tungod kay way piano sa Catigbian in those days? Hehehe.  ;D

For many years the type of songs that Msgr Rudy composed and arranged dominated the Cebu Pop for many years, until now. It seems that participating composers anticipate which type of songs can make the final cut of 12 finalists. Every year since the 1990s I always go to the Cebu popfest; nothing has changed. Mao-mao lang gihapon ang mga judges. Hangtud ang mga finalists nagbalik-balik na lang through the years. Bag-o pa lang mi retire as chairman of the board si Perry Aleonar, tigulang na kaayo. Usahay naay mga new blood sa mga judges, pero panagsa ra. Host Sam Costanilla's jokes are repetitive and boring na. Pero despite these, motan-aw gihapon ko, kay uroy ug naay surprise guests. Like this year (30th anniversary sa popfest), walay contest, pero dihay mini concert of "the best of cebupop" plus a full concert of vina morales. Basta Vina concert gani, grabe ang energy. Enjoy tanan.

Amen. Dili lang ang Cebu Pop Festival but almost all of OPM in recent and in the not so recent years. Halos usa ray style ug "gubot pas lukot," ika nga ang mga arrangements (they put everything together at the same time). I may sound bias coz of my affinity to (and love for) Nashville music. But lately medyo giganahan napod kog balik sa OPM because, I guess, of the globalization of almost everything. Nisikat napod sa ato ang acoustic which are simpler (beauty in simplicity ;) ) and easy-to-the-ear artform, hehehe.  :)

hahaha!  buot silag duol sa luwag ang bol-anon musicians maong iyang na-arrange ang kang tq solis.  bitaw, the way i see it, buotan man god ang mga proteges ni rv aka msgr rudy nga mga bol-anon.  ang mga cebuano niyang proteges kay nagpabadlong man (di tanan kay naay usang amigo nako, buotan.  nigawas lang siya pagkapari kay naminyo man.  but that does not make him badlungon.)

dihay usa nga nanglagot kaayo ko.  he stole my lyrics, honest.  he only changed one word and then concluded that i wasn't the lyricist.  iya na tanan, as composer-lyricist of the songs of a show (nothing to do with msgr rudy; mokurog tingali ko kun naa pa).  paskang tong seminaristaha, dakoag ulo, nisukol ug syinagitay ni msgr rudy.  maayo gani kay wa ma-pari ug dayon.  tua na sa australia, nag-taxi driver.)

bitaw, last nakong attend ug memorable concert ni msgr rudy was eons ago.  the concert's repertoire were the songs of barry manilow.  i learned later that msgr rudy and manilow were classmates when they took their graduate studies in music.

a couple more msgr rudy concerts followed, which rather struck me as forgettable.  it's been more than ten years.  sadly, the latest i heard is that his concerts are no longer as good.  i surmise it's not so much that he's lost the passion or that he's not so healthy anymore but it's more because his talents (i.e. the seminarians) may no longer be as good in music as those who came before.

it's great to know that you have a trail of music too.  (as i suspected, based on some posts here. :D)

Sus, nabiktima diay pod ka aning angkon2x ug intellectual property right. Like you said, daghang kanahan sa ato basta bahin na ingon ana because of loose/lax intellectual property copyright rule or culture among Filipinos.

Yes, Msgr. RV was a graduate of Julliard School of Music  in NYC, where many of the great and known musicians at one point in time walked in its hallways.

The last I've heard of him was when his face was "napatik" in Cebu's newspapers for alleged use of controlled substance or shabu... nidako jud ang news because of his stature in the community. Wala nako kadungog unsay balita human ato...  ???

#9374
There is one Boholano Msgr. Rudy Villanueva admired the most in terms of music or piano, Fr. Rolando "El Maestro" Caverte of Bilar, Bohol. According to Msgr. Rudy, "Sus no kung gitugutan pa nis Fr. Caverte sa obispo nga mo eskwela ug music..." Kuyaw naman gani nga wa maka eskwela... was his point. Fr. Caverte, now retired, was the pianist of the Singing Priests of San Francisco as well as the Paring Bol-anon USA in many of the concerts we've done over the years (26 years to be exact) in the U.S. The good ol' times!  ;)

na-mention ra gyod si msgr. rudy villanueva, the enfant terrible of creative writing (short story) of the '60s and later cebu's foremost musician.  "cebu music is not music without villanueva" or something like that was what i used to hear.

i first heard sa daplin sa baybayon from the san carlos college seminary choir sa cebu, helmed by him.  mao nga na-shock ko reading an earlier post nga kang j. ning romea diay ni nga kanta.  whew!

Yes yes yes Rudy Villanueva is Cebu music and Cebu music is Rudy Villanueva (for the longest time). All the great musicians (personally ra god pod) that I came to know and who shared their knowledge to us as youngsters were either students or greatly-influenced by this man (Fr. Boboy Curso, Bishop Ites Jimenez, TQ Solis, Fr. Arnold Zamora, etc). I'd say he was fond of Boholano priests musicians... mao sad tong ni complain ang mga taga Cebu kay pabor-pabor daw siya sa mga taga Bohol. He was strongly criticized for arranging "Damgo Man Lang" of TQ Solis when he was still, at that time, the chairman of Cecu PM Festival, hehehehe. He was also the chairman of the Cebu Pop Music Festival since its inception/establishment (basin pod diay iya ning ideya wa ta kahibaw hehehe).

RV, as he is fondly called, or his style of vocal arrangement was what gave me the inspiration to write and arrange new Tagalog religious songs when I went to Tagaytay in 1981-1985. I wasn't impressed with the way they sing religious songs, so mao tong naghimo ug nag arrange na lang pod kog akoa RV-style, which eventually led the printing of SASMASSONGS (Mass of St. Augustine), also called in Tagalog MISASMA. SASMA stands for St. Augustine Major Seminary, next to the SVD Seminary.  :)

Buhay nga naman... it doesn't tell you where it leads you...

Pina FB style na lang ni kay nagbuwag-buwag ang mga gusto nako replyan ahihihi...

@Koddi Salamat sa info about Ning Romea. He was our favorite songwriter of Binisaya when we were still with The Jeduthun Choir in the late 70s singing Bisayan classics like Buhi Sa Kanunay, Sa Daplin Sa Baybayon, etc. Also thanks for Mrs. Ganade's name (not Andrade as written earlier). Mrs. Ganade was also our pianist during concerts in our Jeduthun days and worked closely with Bishop Ites Jimenez, one of the best unknown composers of Bisayan songs from Bohol of all times. According to TQ Solis, these two were responsible in completing the translation of Bohol Hymn in the dialect. Maayo gani kay "humble" kaayo ning mga talenta, maski gipapas ilang mga ngan sa credits sa writer sa Bohol Hymn Bol-anon version.  ;D

@Islander Thanks for clarifying about the two songs. I'm sure nakadungog nako ana na kanta if that was the song that won the 1st ever Cebu Pop Music Festival because I have the first four and I used to listen to them (intently).

About the choir version of Buhi Sa Kanunay, ang choir ra jod sa seminario akong nadunggan "ever" nga sig kanta ani - not in concerts - but during funerals. I can still replay the whole vocal arrangements in my head right now hehehehe  ;D

Finally, "Kausa Nausa Nabasa Ang Tubig" was the priests' favorite when we were young priests in the mid 80s. Si Anhing padre Nonoy Avenido used to play that song to us with additional "funny verses" to make us all laugh, much like Bay Hubs and Bay Bugs do here at TB. Makadungog gani nang duha sa lyrics ani na kanta sigurado jong ma OT napod ta ani nga thread bwahahaha.  ;D

Funny verse:

Kalibutang buak, mga laya nga bulak
Kinandadohang lawak
Sa tunga-tunga, sa kangitngit
May nabating usa ka singgit, "Waaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!"  ;D

I always know Ning Romeo as taga Loon. Wikipedia says he was born in Napo, Loon, Bohol. (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justino_Romea) but he could have migrated to Maribojoc or married a Maribojocanon. Hehehe.

Also, he is known more as a lyricist than a musician. He wrote the words to the Bohol Hymn which Mrs. Iquit Butalid claimed to be hers per record (old LP) that the former Bohol (Sanghimig) Choir produced in the 70s. But based on hearsays - among priests musicians - it was really then Fr. (now Bishop) Zacharias "Ites" Jimenez of Inabanga, Bohol - our former music director at IHMS - who was responsible for the translation of the Bohol Hymn to what it is now, with the help of HS School pianist, Mrs. (I forgot the name) Andrade. But then again, that's only a story from the grapevine, hahahaha (but which I know has some truth).  ;D

Atty Elpidio Biliran, the Sr., who co-wrote the song "Dagohoy" sung by Yoyoy Villame could be the tunesmith of the said song "Buhi Sa Kanunay" pero karon pako nakadungog ani (via Isles). But that's a big possibility knowing that Atty. Biliran is very well known as a music writer. His son, Fr. Joseph was a classmate of mine and he used to tell me stories about his dad's musical journey... while Fr. Elpidio "Boy" Biliran, Jr. was the very person responsible for teaching me how to write musical notation when we were studying together at the SVD Seminary in Tagaytay in 1981. Fr. Biliran is a good organist and one of the best lyricists I know.

As far as "Sama Sa Usa Ka Damgo" is concerned, I wonder if we are talking about one and the same song... the one which won the grand prize in the 2nd Cebu Pop Music Festival in 1982 0r 1983? The title I'm thinking about is "Damgo Man Lang," written by the former Fr. TQ Solis and Atty. Antonio Amora, Jr. and sung by Arthur Ungab? Pero morag layo raman nis title sa imong gi mention hehehehe.  :D

I need the translation of this title, Father.

My attempt: Always living?

Is this correct?

If I were to translate it freely this is how I would say it:

Always alive and unforgetable is
the love that I feel for you,
the love that I have in my heart right now.

I apologize for the second verse... those are deep Bol-anon words
(yam-id and tamay)

Even if you give me that look (?)
Or I get criticized for loving you (?)
Love will always grow (molambo)... and, molipang (I don't know this one)
Because true love never dies...

Chrosu:
Please believe in what I say
Trust in the promise I give
This love is one that never withers
Even if it's carried away by the waves of tears (hehehehe)
If my heart is pierced/hurt by fate
Then I'll just wait for you in heaven.  (Naks) ;D

I never thought for a moment that this whole issue was a secret...  :P

Of course, we know it never was a secret plan the fact that Bohol Chronicle was quoted as reporting the news. That alone took away the secrecy that the title portrayed. Of course, the thread poster is no expert literary expert nor a professional reporter. But he did expose an exposé that may have slipped the watchful eyes of Chronicle readers or TB watchdogs. In a way, it is good that this sort of "stuff" are being made even more public than it has been. Plus I get to hear/read Lorenzo, Isles et al's deliberations on a topic as intriguing as "pintik ni alging." That's why I enjoy TB... I get to read or hear news that I may have missed on a day to day basis. Plus I get to hear how people feel/think/express themselves.  ;D
