The Feast of the Holy Family is a liturgical celebration in the Roman Catholic Church in honour of Jesus of Nazareth, his mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and his foster father, Saint Joseph, as a family.

The feast of the Holy Family was instituted by Pope Leo XIII in 1893 and until January 1969 was celebrated on the Sunday within the Octave of the Epiphany; that is to say, on whichever day from January 7 through January 13, all inclusive, fell on a Sunday (see General Roman Calendar of 1962).

It is now observed on the Sunday between Christmas and New Year's Day, in the Octave of Christmas; in years when no such Sunday exists, because both December 25 and the ensuing January 1 are Sundays, it is held on December 30, a Friday in such years.

The feast is not a holy day of obligation, but the obligation to attend Mass holds for the Sunday on which it most frequently falls, as happens for other feasts and solemnities that happen to be celebrated on a Sunday.

When the Feast of the Holy Family was moved to its present date, its previous place in the calendar was taken by the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord.

Most Protestant denominations refer to the Sunday that Roman Catholics call the Feast of the Holy Family simply as the First Sunday after Christmas.

Prayer
GOD our Heavenly Father, You call all peoples to be united as one family in worshipping You as the one and true God. You willed that Your Son become man, giving Him a virgin mother and a foster father to form the Holy Family of Nazareth.

WE pray: may the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, image and model of every human family unit walk in the spirit of Nazareth and grow in the understanding of its particular mission in society and the Church. May our families be living cells of love, faithfulness and unity, thus reflecting God's covenant with humanity and Christ's redeeming love for His Church.

JESUS, Mary and Joseph protect our families from all evil; keep us, who are away from home, one in love with our dear ones.

Gluehwein

Mulled wine, variations of which are popular around the world, is wine, usually red, combined with spices and typically served warm. In the old times, wine often went bad. By adding spices and honey, it could be made drinkable again. Nowadays, it is a traditional drink during winter, especially around Christmas.

Glögg is the Nordic form of mulled wine, similar to Glühwein in German-speaking countries. Glühwein is usually prepared from red wine, heated and spiced with cinnamon sticks, vanilla pods, cloves, citrus and sugar. Almonds and raisins are often added to the Scandinavian version, though not to the German. Fruit wines such as blueberry wine and cherry wine are sometimes used instead of grape wine in Germany. The oldest Glühwein tankard is documented in the high noble German and first Riesling grower of the world, Count John IV. of Katzenelnbogen around 1420. This gold-plated lockable silver tankard imitating the traditional wine woven wooden can is called Welcome.[1]

In Romania it is called vin fiert ("boiled wine"), and can be made using either red or white wine, sometimes adding peppercorn. In Moldova the izvar is made from red wine with black pepper and honey. In Italy, mulled wine is typical in the northern part of the country.

What Is a Hickey? Tsikinini
A hickey is actually broken blood vessels beneath the skin. It's sort of like a bruise, if you got hit with a baseball and the impact broke the blood vessels. But instead of being caused by a foul ball, it's caused by the other person's mouth.

How Do You Give a Hickey?
What you do is put your mouth against the side of their neck, in a kissing shape. You leave your mouth slightly open in the middle, like you're saying the letter "O". Now you suck in! You suck the skin into your mouth, in essence hurting it, and causing the blood vessels to break. This turns that circular area bright red. It doesn't take long, maybe 30 seconds.

If you really aren't good at suction, you can nibble with your teeth. But that is really a last resort, because now you're not giving them a hickey. Now you're just gnawing their skin to make it red.

Yes, giving a hickey hurts the person you're doing it to. You're breaking their blood vessels! But to some, a hickey is a temporary mark of love. Sort of like a red tattoo that fades naturally after a few days. It says "This girl (or guy) trusted me enough to let me damage their throat, one of the most sensitive parts of the human body".

Who Gives a hickey, the Boy or the Girl?
That's like asking who kisses who! Hickeys aren't a male or female thing. They're an "I was Here!" thing, sort of like a mark of pride. So either the girl or the guy can give it to each other. It's sort of a primitive way of saying "This boy is mine!" or "This girl belongs to me!"

Where does the Hickey Go?
Hickeys are marks of possession, so most people put them on the neck where they're nice and visible. Also, a hickey is caused by lips breaking blood vessels and that's easy to do on the sensitive neck. It's less easy to do, say, on the sole of someone's foot. Plus, nobody would see it there. Sure, you could put a hickey on someone's upper inner thigh, but unless they were wearing a swimsuit, nobody would see it. You might as well draw a smily face with magic marker :)

How Long does a Hickey Last?
A hickey is a bruise. Just like any other bruise you get on your body, it will fade when your body heals. There's no set rate. Some people heal quickly, some people heal slowly. It all depends on your own body. You must have been bruised before in your life! So you know how long bruises tend to last ...

How do I Hide my Hickey?
A hickey is put there to show up! It's a mark of I-Was-Here. Why else did you get a hickey on your neck? But let's assume that some wild hickey attacker got to you and now you have to hide the evidence. Again, it's a bruise. It won't just vanish with warm water or cold water or lukewarm water. You can get make-up concealer and try that, to cover it while it fades away naturally. Wear turtlenecks or scarves. If you tend to be a really slow healer, take vitamins and eat healthy food so your body has half a chance of healing up well. Stand in dark corners :)

It will NOT work to put water, ice, eye drops, or aspirin on your hickey. This is a bruise. Blood vessels are broken, they need to mend.

What if I Don't Want a Hickey on Me / Don't Want to Give a Hickey?
In fact I know MANY people who hate hickeys and would never want to give or receive one. To them, it is deliberately causing a partner pain and anguish, and physically harming them. Why would you ever want to do that to someone you cared about? It's just as bad as hitting them with your open palm and then admiring the welt you left. If you personally do NOT want to give or receive a hickey, that is your right. Never let anybody pressure you into doing something you feel uncomfortable with. A true partner would always value your feelings, and would not try to push you into something you didn't want to do.

A kiss is the touching of one person's lips to another place, which is used as an expression of affection, respect, greeting, farewell, good luck, romantic affection or sexual desire. The word comes from Old English cyssan "to kiss", in turn from coss "a kiss".  wikipedia.

St. John's Wine

Drinking blessed wine for the love of St. John is an old Catholic devotion.

Directions

In some churches, after the convent or parochial Mass, wine is blessed in honor of St. John (see the Roman Ritual, English translation The Book of Blessings, Blessing of Food or Drink or Other Elements Connected with Devotion). If the custom is not held in your church, the pastor would probably be happy to bless a bottle for you.

The wine is served in the home before the main meal. The father lifts the cup toward the mother and says: "I drink you the love of St. John." And she answers, "I thank you for the love of St. John."

Then the mother turns to the eldest child and says, "I drink you the love of St. John." The ceremony continues from one to another including any guests and servants. This practice takes its origin from the fact that St. John was the apostle of love, and in the legend that at one time poisoned wine did not affect him.
............................................................

We drank wine after the mass, I experienced this for the first time.

Spaetburgundy was the wine, and the priest said "Drink to the love of St John!".

Nahinumdom ko sa galon nga tuba.

Saint Peter's Square - The Pope Benedict XVI before the Urbi et Orbi Blessing
by *Checco*.

Urbi et Orbi, literally "to the City [of Rome] and to the World," was a standard opening of Roman proclamations. Nowadays the term is used to denote a papal address and Apostolic Blessing that is addressed to the City of Rome and to the entire world.

The blessing takes place at each Easter and Christmas celebration in Rome from the central loggia of St. Peter's Basilica. Part of the urbi et orbi blessing is the remission of all temporal punishment due to sin through a plenary indulgence attached to the Papal blessing.

The main phrase of the blessing ends Et benedictio Dei omnipotentis, Patris et Filii et Spiritus Sancti descendat super vos et maneat semper (And may the blessing of Almighty God, + the Father, + the Son, and + the Holy Spirit, descend on you and remain with you always).

This is the spot that marks the traditional exact place of birth of Jesus Christ.

"Fitted into the paving, shines a 14 pointed silver star marking the exact spot surrounded by the Latin inscription: HICDE VIRGINE MARIA JESUS CHRISTUS NATUS EST. 1717. (Here Jesus Christ was born to the Virgin Mary). Of the 15 lamps burning around the recess, six belong to the Greeks, 5 to the Armenians and four to the Latins." [Description from atlastours.net]

Bethlehem, birth place of Jesus

In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
He was in the beginning with God.
All things came to be through him,
and without him nothing came to be.
What came to be through him was life,
and this life was the light of the human race;
the light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness has not overcome it.
The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.
He was in the world,
and the world came to be through him,
but the world did not know him.
He came to what was his own,
but his own people did not accept him.

But to those who did accept him
he gave power to become children of God,
to those who believe in his name,
who were born not by natural generation
nor by human choice nor by a man’s decision
but of God.
And the Word became flesh
and made his dwelling among us,
and we saw his glory,
the glory as of the Father’s only Son,
full of grace and truth.

The Society of the Divine Word was founded by Saint Arnold Janssen on September 8, 1875 in Steyl, a small village in The Netherlands, just across the German border. Inspired by the Holy Spirit, Saint Arnold Janssen also answered the need of the Church in his time by founding two other religious congregations for women; the Missionary Sisters Servants of the Holy Spirit (active) and the Sisters Servants of the Holy Spirit for Perpetual Adoration
The SVDs, in their 16th General Chapter, re-elected Antonio M. Pernia (Bol-anon), a Filipino, as the superior general for the next six years.

A Catholic Fil Community from Duesseldorf made a trip in Steyl. The home province of the Divine Word Missionary. I will share some pictures with you.

Christmas Day

On this day the Church focuses especially on the newborn Child, God become human, who embodies for us all the hope and peace we seek. We need no other special saint today to lead us to Christ in the manger, although his mother Mary and Joseph, caring for his foster-Son, help round out the scene.
But if we were to select a patron for today, perhaps it might be appropriate for us to imagine an anonymous shepherd, summoned to the birthplace by a wondrous and even disturbing vision in the night, a summons from an angelic choir, promising peace and goodwill. A shepherd willing to seek out something that might just be too unbelievable to chase after, and yet compelling enough to leave behind the flocks in the field and search for a mystery.

On the day of the Lord’s birth, let’s let an unnamed, “un-celebrity” at the edge of the crowd model for us the way to discover Christ in our own heartsâ€"somewhere between skepticism and wonder, between mystery and faith. And, like Mary and the shepherds, let us treasure that discovery in our hearts.

This is really exciting to find an ethnic group Eskaya who truly exists. Sad to say they were not able to put  their history and culture in writings. If there are present developments in Balanghai and Eskaya connections , rest assured I will post and share it with you here.

Manuel Elizalde, 60, Dies; Defender of Primitive Tribe
By ROBERT MCG. THOMAS JR.
Published: May 8, 1997
Manuel Elizalde Jr., a wealthy Filipino official who caused a sensation in 1971 when he announced that he had discovered a tiny tribe of people who had lived for thousands of years in such blissful Stone Age isolation that they had no word for war, died on Saturday at his home in Makati, a Manila suburb. He was 60, and some scientists say he was one of the world's master hoaxers.
To the wave of anthropologists, archaeologists and others who descended on Mindanao, in the southern Philippines, in the early 1970's, the 24 people Mr. Elizalde said he had found there in June 1971 seemed too good to be true.
Calling themselves Tasadays, after their sacred mountain, they were hunter-gatherers who never ventured far from their cave dwellings, had no notion of agriculture, went around naked or in leaves, lived in perfect harmony and said they had assumed they were the only people in the world, even though a population of farming people lived only a three-hour walk through the dense jungle.
There were those who were suspicious from the beginning. For one thing, Mr. Elizalde was something of an iconoclast. A Harvard-educated scion of one of the Philippines' wealthiest families, he had given up his hard-drinking playboy ways to champion the nation's beleaguered minorities, first as a private citizen and later as a member of President Ferdinand E. Marcos's Cabinet.
Mr. Elizalde affected such an interest in primitive youth that he and his wife adopted 50 children from minority groups.
Still, the initial wave of social scientists who visited the Tasadays were convinced they were who they and Mr. Elizalde said they were. Their enthusiastic reports led to a book, ''The Gentle Tasaday: A Stone Age People in the Philippine Rain Forest,'' by John Nance; glowing accounts in The National Geographic, and extensive television coverage.
Expressing fear that the Tasadays' habitat would be destroyed by the encroachments of civilization, the Marcos Government created a 46,000-acre preserve for them and put it off limits to loggers and farmers.
Skeptics were dismayed in 1974 when Mr. Elizalde, citing a need to protect the Tasadays from exploitation and the harmful effects of too much contact with civilization, blocked any further visits by social scientists.
The area remained off limits until after Marcos was deposed in 1986. Then, as outsiders again made their way to the Tasaday preserve, doubts about them became rampant.
Some anthropologists had called their story implausible from the beginning. Among other things, they pointed out, their caves lacked the middens, or trash heaps, that would have been expected of peoples living there for centuries.
It did not help when members of a neighboring tribe said Mr. Elizalde had paid them to take off their clothes and pose as Tasadays for visiting journalists and others.
Mr. Elizalde, who had been forced to leave the Philippines in 1983 after a falling out with Imelda Marcos, the President's wife, settled on a coffee plantation in Costa Rica with more than a dozen young Filipino girls. It did not add to his reputation when the Costa Rica Government expelled him in 1986, citing scandalous reports of what went on inside his heavily guarded compound.
He returned to the Philippines in 1988, helped manage his family's extensive business interests and tried unsuccessfully to rekindle his political career. A 1993 nomination to be Ambassador to Mexico was withdrawn after it created a political furor over Mr. Elizalde's ties to the Marcos administration and his role in what was then widely perceived as the Tasaday hoax.
Since 1971 the Tasadays have virtually merged into neighboring groups and picked up so many trappings of modern civilization that they can no longer be studied as unique primitives.
But the debate over their origins still rages. For all the questions of plausibility and the reports that they were paid to fake the degree of their primitive status, some social scientists still believe they had lived for a few centuries in complete isolation.
It was a reflection of their rapid acculturalization that in 1988, several members of the tribe filed a libel suit against anthropologists who had called them fakers.
''We are the forest,'' one of the women said before affixing her thumbprint to the complaint. ''We are the Tasaday. We are as real as the forest and the flowers and the trees and the stream.''
It was an eloquent declaration, and one that would undoubtedly have been given more credence if it had not been made at Mr. Elizalde's Manila mansion by an interpreter he supplied.

What better way to prepare for the arrival of the Christ Child than to take a brief journey to Greccio, the spot in central Italy where St. Francis of Assisi created the first Christmas crib in the year 1223.
Francis, recalling a visit he had made years before to Bethlehem, resolved to create the manger he had seen there. The ideal spot was a cave in nearby Greccio. He would find a baby (we’re not sure if it was a live infant or the carved image of a baby), hay upon which to lay him, an ox and an ass to stand beside the manger. Word went out to the people of the town. At the appointed time they arrived carrying torches and candles.

One of the friars began celebrating Mass. Francis himself gave the sermon. His biographer, Thomas of Celano, recalls that Francis “stood before the manger…overcome with love and filled with a wonderful happiness…” For Francis, the simple celebration was meant to recall the hardships Jesus suffered even as an infant, a savior who chose to become poor for our sake, a truly human Jesus.

Tonight, as we pray around the Christmas cribs in our homes, we welcome into our hearts that same Savior.

Of Shepherds and Angels
Jesus’ birth was attended by the highest and the lowest, by angels and shepherds. While the world slept unaware, our salvation came to us. God became a human being. All heaven knew, and the angels sang praises to God. But the only ones on earth who were aware that night were Jesus’ poor parents, shivering in a shelter for animals, and the lowly shepherds watching their sheep.

You mean Manuel Elizalde of PANAMIN , this institution was a pakulo of Pres Marcos. They "discovered" stone-age people called T´saday, in South Cotabato. They were paid to act like stone age people to attract foreign attention. BBC made a documentation about this. They really gullible to believe it. Elizalde was called Taobong, the good man, as the discoverer. He was hailed like a hero. The caves where they lived was supposed to be rich in mineral deposits. It took years to realized that it was all fakes.

With the Holy Father's encouragement of the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite, the traditional practice of offering a Votive Mass of Our Lady in Advent has come back and already become a regular part of the Advent Season. Rorate Masses - so called because the Introit begins with the words Rorate coeli desuper - are often celebrated in the early morning. The practice of celebrating them purely by candlelight in Germany and Austria has spread - a practice which is alluded to in the writings of Pope Benedict who described the Rorate Mass as an important part of the realization of his own priestly vocation.

Of course, one of the really wonderful things about the current emphasis on the Extraordinary Form is that we can begin to regain many of the traditions that have been laid aside in the misinterpretation of the Conciliar mind. There is nothing stopping a priest from celebrating an Ordinary Form Votive Mass of Our Lady in Advent - indeed it should be actively encouraged! The older Form of the Mass informs our use of the Ordinary Form and brings us to a clearer understanding of the roots of the liturgy. Many parishes celebrate Advent and Christmas with candlelit services late in the evening - this is nothing new! The Rorate Mass gives the congregation just this opportunity and, whilst traditionally this is celebrated early in the morning, there seems no reason why it could be held in the evening under the newer dispensation.

So, Parish Clergy, don't dread that Advent Carol Service or Service of Light before Christmas. Instead, get out your finest white vestments, get a choir in to sing some beautiful music and let the ancient liturgy of the church do the talking.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I attended a Rorate mass for the first time 7.15 in the morning, it´s still dark, after the mass a candle was distributed for tonight. This is a special candle (12 inches long)brought all the way from Bethlehem, Israel, the place of Nativity. I was so happy!

Vintage tram and vintage costumes

..with a modern commuter train passing by. If you look sharp you see that there are neither tracks nor catenary wire for this tramway. This is because the last tramway line in Wuppertal has been abandoned some twenty years ago. On behalf of the annual state festival of Northrhine Westphalia this historic streetcar has been set up under the Sonnborn viaduct. The idea was to replicate a historic scene which is documented on picture postcards from the early 20th century which show four different means of transportation in one image: A car of Wuppertal's unique suspension monorail, a tramway car, a steam powered train and an airship. In the morning of the first festival day police cars spoiled the scene but gave an interesting contrast to the old streetcar which is preserved in a traction museum nearby.

John the Baptist’s Birth
The Church never speaks about Jesus’ birth without also mentioning his Precursor, John the Baptist, who prepared Israel for his coming. John’s birth was so miraculous that the whole village wanted to know, “What will this child become?” John is present even today, pointing to Jesus as our long-awaited Messiah, reminding us that Jesus is coming soon.

Dear Lorenzo,

These last few days I had been meditating, did Mother Mary know the sufferings that lies ahead to the baby she is holding in her arms?
But remembering Magnificat , her response to the Angel Gabriel is a great symbol of trust and humility to the Lord, that we misses, our final trust and confidence to the Divine.

Merry Christmas.

Belle,
I will try this coming year 2009 for an italian lover. Kon makaplogan ang wati akong isadya dinhi.

Lindy,
This street children is a big issue in Germany. There are lots of organizations who helps them. Orphanages are given clothings and materials for schools. What pains me a lot are those kids in jail. They are so congested and they have shiftings when they sleep.  Children who allows themselves to be sold are given better treatment,  ( polis man pod ang mag bugaw). If you have children you will shiver with pain, pity and anger. Ang DSW  are full of cases of children abuse, they can´t cope with this extreme situation.
This is sad, just to think there are people in higher political echelons who are swimming in money.
