Apple has pushed past arch-rival Microsoft to become the world's biggest technology company.

Changes in the share price values of the two in Wednesday's choppy trading left the total value of Apple at $222bn (£154bn).

Microsoft is now valued by investors at $219bn.

The worth, known as market capitalisation, is calculated by multiplying the number of shares in a company by the current share price.

Although Apple shares closed down 0.4%, Microsoft fell by 4%.

Apple, which makes computers, iPods, iPhones and now iPads, almost went out of business in the 1990s.

Its growth is partly owing to the launch of the stylish iPod in 2001.

Its compatibility with existing - but not mass-selling - Apple computers lead customers to engage with them, just as Microsoft's products looked set for long-term dominance. -bbc

Social network Facebook has said it will offer a one-stop shop for privacy settings in response to user concerns.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg admitted the settings had "gotten complex" for users.

It follows a storm of protest from users over a series of changes on the site that left its members unsure about how public their information had become.

"We needed to simplify controls," he told a press conference.

"We want people to be able to share information in the way that they want," he told BBC News.

In a bid to further accelerate Philippine exports to Japan, local companies from the fashion wearables and home furnishings sectors will participate in the two-week Philippine Trade Mission with Business Meetings in Tokyo.

“The vision [here] is to increase awareness on Philippine products in the world’s second biggest market and of Japan as one of the top export destinations of products from the Philippines,” said Trade Secretary Jesli A. Lapus.

Rural folks continue to benefit from the higher loan portfolio of the Land Bank of ]the Philippines (Landbank) as it grew by 5.6 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2010.

Landbank President Gilda Pico, in a briefing, said their loan portfolio rose by P10.3 billion to P193.9 billion in the first three months of 2010 from the P183.6 billion same period last year.

She explained that their priority sectors had a share of 67.5 percent amounting to P130.9 billion of the whole pie.

Landbank’s priority sectors include small farmers and fisherfolk, microenterprises and small and medium enterprises (SMEs), livelihood, agri-business, agri-infrastructure, socialized housing, schools and hospitals, and other agri- and environment-related projects.

In particular, loans extended to the agri-infrastructure projects of local government units (LGUs) had the largest share at P27.9 billion or 14 percent of the total and was followed by funding extended to agri-related projects of government-owned and controlled corporation (GOCCs) at P25.7 or 13 percent.

Loans extended to agri-business and microenterprises and SMEs both had 10 percent share although the amount varied at P20.1 billion and P19.1 billion, respectively.

While loans used for socialized housing, schools and hospitals totaled to P12.7 billion.

Pico said total loans to small farmers and fisherfolk reached P16.9 billion in the first three months this year while those extended to environmental-related projects to P4.4 billion and to livelihood projects to P4.1 billion.  - pna

Filipino and American troops have disposed of more than 2,000 pounds of unexploded ordnance that had reached potentially hazardous levels, U.S. and Filipino military officials said Tuesday.

The Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) technicians from the 3rd EOD detachment in Camp Gen. Arturo Enrile worked earlier this month with the Naval Special Operations Unit (NAVSOU) sixth EOD technicians in the Sirawai, Zamboanga del Norte and disposed the unexploded ordnance.

During the day-long event, sailors from Joint Special Operations Task Forceâ€"Philippines (JSOTF-P) provided technical support and subject matter expertise.

“We have a good working relationship with our counterparts in NAVSOU EOD,” Maj. Michael Duquez, commanding officer of 3rd EOD Detachment, said.

“When we conduct an operation near the area of water, we coordinate with them and if they have an activity on the ground they coordinate with us to accomplish the mission safely,” Duquez said. - pna

The guy says: "Nope, I want you to increase my I.Q. times five, and if you don't do it, I won't set you free." But no matter what the mermaid said, the guy insisted on having his I.Q. increased by five times it's usual power. So the mermaid sighed and said: "Done."

Associated Press: A service vehicle at Maine's Bangor International Airport has struck and killed two dogs owned by John Travolta.

The city says the accident happened after an airplane carrying members of Travolta's family landed early last Thursday and the dogs were being walked. The city issued the statement after the Bangor Daily News newspaper confirmed the accident through an e-mail from the city manager to the City Council.

CBS and fans of "Two and a Half Men" don't have to fret about subtracting Charlie Sheen from TV's top-rated sitcom.

Sheen has agreed to a new contract that will keep him on the show for two more seasons, spokesman Stan Rosenfield said Monday evening after the deal was reached.

"To put a fitting end on the 2 1/2 months of whirlwind speculation, I'm looking forward to returning to my CBS home on Monday nights," Sheen, 44, said in a statement, adding his thanks to CBS Corp. Chief Executive Leslie Moonves for his support.

A group of 14 civil- and immigrant-rights organizations and 10 individuals on Monday filed a federal lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of Arizona's new immigration law.

This is the fifth legal challenge of the law, which goes into effect July 29 and makes it a state crime to be in the country illegally. All of the lawsuits seek to prevent the law from going into effect. However, this latest case names Arizona's county officials as defendants, while previous suits were filed against state officials.

Alessandra Soler Meetze, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Arizona, said the intent is to focus on the entities that will actually be carrying out the law. - azcentral.com

A woman who lured a pregnant teen to her apartment, drugged her, cut the child from the womb to try to pass it off as her own and killed the teen was sentenced Monday to life in prison plus 20 years.

The penalty for Andrea Curry-Demus, 40, of Wilkinsburg was largely determined in March when Allegheny County Judge Jeffrey Manning found her guilty but mentally ill of second-degree murder. That carries the mandatory life sentence imposed formally on Monday, and Manning tacked on 20 years for kidnapping, saying, "It would be a huge injustice if you were ever released into society." - azcentral.com

The Seattle City Council voted Monday to boycott Arizona as much as possible because of a new, stricter immigration law there.

Arizona legislators voted in April to give police power to detain anyone suspected of being in the country illegally and makes the failure to carry immigration documents a crime.

Seattle joins several other cities in passing a boycott of the state in response to the strict immigration law. Boston; New York City; Los Angeles; Oakland, Calif.; West Hollywood, Calif.; and San Diego have passed similar resolutions condemning the law and promising to spend less money in the state. An English teacher at a Tucson high school has been arrested for allegedly having a sexual relationship with one of her male students.

Tucson police say in a statement released Monday night that 25-year-old Christie Elliot faces charges of luring a minor for sexual exploitation and sexual conduct with a minor.

Elliot taught at Empire High School, where she also is the cheerleading coach.

According to police, a parent found inappropriate messages on his son's cell phone in April and reported them to the school. A police investigation included search warrants and interviews, and concluded that the boy had an inappropriate sexual relationship with his English teacher. - azcentral.com

Saudi security forces have freed two German girls kidnapped in Yemen last year, the interior ministry says.

The two children were part of a family of five, kidnapped along with another four people, almost 12 months ago in Yemen's northern region.

Two German nurses and a South Korean were found dead shortly afterward.

The girls were found in the disputed border region between Yemen and Saudi Arabia, a statement said. The condition of the remaining hostages is unknown.

The computer systems used to control modern cars are very vulnerable to attack, say experts.

An investigation by security researchers found the systems to be "fragile" and easily subverted.

The researchers showed how to kill a car engine remotely, turn off the brakes so the car would not stop and make instruments give false readings.

The former Food Network star awaits arraignment today after being arrested for allegedly trying to hire homeless men to kill his wife. Cruz was booked on solicitation to commit murder Thursday.

According to Santa Monica, Calif., Sgt. Jay Trisler, three homeless men told the city's homeless liaison officers that Cruz asked them to kill someone. They agreed to help police investigate the alleged murder-for-hire plot.

A U.S. immigration court has granted asylum toPresident Obama's Kenyan aunt, Zeituni Onyango, who was ordered deported from the U.S. in 2004 but stayed and appealed for the right to live here.

Onyango, 57, the half-sister of Obama's late father, made a personal appeal before a judge at a closed hearing in February, but details of the case she made remains unclear. "The asylum process is confidential and she wants to keep it that way," her attorney Scott Bratton told the Associated Press today. "She doesn't want people to feel sorry for her."

(Reuters) - Richard Blumenthal, the early favorite to win retiring fellow Democrat Christopher Dodd's Senate seat from Connecticut, never served in the military in Vietnam despite his public comments indicating he had done so, the New York Times reported on Monday.

If these revelations harm Blumenthal's campaign, they could help Republicans pick up a Senate seat now in Democratic hands as they try to gain control of Congress in November elections.

Blumenthal, Connecticut's state attorney general, received at least five military deferments from 1965 to 1970, the newspaper said, citing his military records. It said in April 1970, Blumenthal landed a spot in the Marine Corps Reserve but never actually was sent to serve in Vietnam during the war.

Iraqi security forces have detained an al-Qaida militant suspected of planning an attack targeting the World Cup in South Africa next month, an official said Monday.

Maj. Gen. Qassim al-Moussawi, a spokesman for Baghdad security services, said Abdullah Azam Saleh al-Qahtani was an officer in the Saudi army. He is suspected of planning a "terrorist act" in South Africa during the World Cup beginning June 11, al-Moussawi told a news conference in Baghdad.

With BP finally gaining some control over the amount of oil spewing into the Gulf of Mexico, scientists are increasingly worried that huge plumes of crude already spilled could get caught in a current that would carry the mess all the way to the Florida Keys and beyond, damaging coral reefs and killing wildlife.

Scientists said the oil will move into the so-called loop current soon if it hasn't already, though they could not say exactly when or how much there would be. Once it is in the loop, it could take 10 days or longer to reach the Keys.

US auto giant General Motors reported Monday a post-bankruptcy quarterly profit for the first time in three years on the back of a jump in sales and cost cutting.

Net income for the first quarter 2010 reached $865 million compared with a massive loss of $5.98 billion during the same period in 2009.

The earnings attributable to stockholders during the January-March period came on the back of a 40-percent jump in sales and revenue to $31.5 billion from $22.4 billion in the 2009 corresponding period.

As GM erased the red ink on its balance sheet, a weekend news report said it was eyeing an initial public offering, which would enable the government to begin selling its stake in the company.

AN INDONESIAN maid was hauled to court on Wednesday for having sex with her employer's 12-year-old son.

The 27-year-old is alleged to have caused the boy, with his consent, to engage in oral sex at the HDB unit in the east on Dec 25 last year.

She is also accused of causing the boy to have sex with her sometime at end-June and mid-December last year. The fourth charge under the Children and Young Persons Act states that she committed an obscene act with a child by engaging in sex and oral sex with him between end-June and Dec 25.

The largest study to date on links between mobile phone use and certain types of brain cancer has proved inconclusive, researchers say.

The results indicate a possible health risk from heavy mobile phone use, said the World Health Organisation (WHO), which conducted the study.

But it said further research was needed for more conclusive answers.

The 10-year study of 13,000 people has been criticised because mobile phone companies provided 25% of the funding.

"The study doesn't reveal an increased risk, but we can't conclude that there is no risk because there are enough findings that suggest a possible risk," the study's chief author, Elisabeth Cardis, told AFP news agency. - BBC

Not in Davao City, Anna. Suklian pa ka sa imong singkwenta centavos. In Bangkok Thailand, there are many honest taxi drivers. But in Manila? Sigh.

In his sermon titled “What Is the Recession For?” pastor John Piper suggests that when the economy plummets, God has His own purposes. Some of them might be:

1. To expose hidden sin and so bring us to repentance and cleansing.

2. To wake us up to the constant and desperate condition of the developing world, where there is always and only recession of the worst kind.

3. To relocate the roots of our joy in His grace rather than in our goods, in His mercy rather than in our money, in His worth rather than in our wealth.

4. To advance His saving mission in the worldâ€"the spread of the gospel and the growth of His churchâ€"precisely at a time when human resources are least able to support it.

5. To bring His church to care for its hurting members and to grow in the gift of love.

What else does God want to teach us in difficult times? That nothing is impossible with Him (Luke 1:37). That He who owns “the cattle on a thousand hills” (Ps. 50:10) is not limited by an economic downturn. That God hasn’t placed a moratorium on the Great Commission nor abandoned us (Matt. 28:20). World boxing champion Manny Pacquiao believes he can continue his phenomenal career in the ring while fulfilling his dream of helping his poor countrymen as a politician.

“It just needs discipline. You just need time management,” he said.

Still on a high after winning a congressional seat representing impoverished Sarangani province, Pacquiao, 31, said he would continue fightingâ€"both as an athlete and legislator for the people.

“There are many problems in my province, many people who need help and, one by one, we will decide what to do to help them,” said Pacquiao at a grand celebration in his hometown Saturday night. - PDI

THE DEPARTMENT OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS (DFA) reissued its travel advisory to Bangkok, Thailand, Saturday in view of the escalating incidents of violence there.

“The department has strongly advised Filipinos to postpone non-essential travel to Thailand, particularly the capital city Bangkok,” the advisory said.

“Filipinos who are already in Thailand are advised to avoid all areas where anti-government rallyists continue to congregate and stage their protest,” it added.

At least 29 people were killed and 110, including security personnel, injured in clashes between antigovernment protesters and security forces in the Thai capital Friday, online reports said.

Renegade Thai general, Khattiya Sawasdipol, who was shot on Thursday as he backed protesters in Bangkok, has died, hospital officials have said.

The announcement came amid fresh fighting between the protesters and soldiers after Thai officials rejected a demand for UN-backed talks.

There was gunfire and explosions outside upscale hotels opposite the protesters' fortified encampment.

Thirty-six people have been killed in the violence since Thursday.

Maj Gen Khattiya, known as Seh Daeng (Commander Red), was shot in the head on Thursday as he spoke to a New York Times journalist within the protesters' rally site. - BBC
