Korina Sanchez tells critics: ‘Bring it on’

‘REAL’ MAR

That Roxas was behind in the surveys meant that his supporters needed to introduce him more to the public, Aquino said.

If he were Roxas’ campaign strategist, Abad said he would organize “intimate” sessions between him and such groups as farmers or parents.

Abad said these would give the public an idea of who the “real” Mar Roxas is.

The operation cost the lives of 44 members of the elite Special Action Force. Their families still cry out for justice.

“What he did was the opposite of what would be expected of a person with integrity,” Casiple said, referring to Roxas’ decision to stay on.

“He defended the President and in so doing, he was also at the receiving end of all the anger over the incident.”

Abad said a typical politician would have been swayed by public opinion and severed his ties with the President.

“But Mar Roxas is not just a politician,” he said. “He understood that at that point, the President needed him.”

SHORTCOMINGS

More than his image problem, Roxas will be confronted by his shortcomings as a member of Aquino’s Cabinet, according to Casiple.

Casiple cited Roxas’ failure to fix or at least improve conditions at the Metro Rail Transit system when he was still transportation secretary.

Casiple also raised questions over Roxas’ handling of the government’s relief efforts after supertyphoon Yolanda hit in 2013.

At the height of the Mamasapano fiasco, he said Roxas should have quit the Cabinet if only to show his independence and “integrity.”

Aquino bypassed Roxas as interior secretary and instead allowed then Philippine National Police chief Alan Purisima, who was suspended at that time, to run the operation to capture two high-profile terrorists.

PEDIGREE

The overriding impression that Roxas is an elitist is derived partly from his pedigree.

He comes from the wealthy and powerful Roxas and Araneta clans. His grandfather is former President Manuel Roxas. His father is the late Sen. Gerry Roxas, a former LP president who fought alongside Ninoy Aquino during Martial Law.

Roxas is a graduate of the Wharton School of Economics at the University of Pennsylvania in the United States.

His supporters insist his vast experience in government makes him more than qualified to be President. He’s been a member of both houses of Congress and a Cabinet secretary during the Estrada and Aquino administrations.

Casiple said no candidate, not even Binay, could really claim to “already know the job.”

“The presidency is a one-time job,” he said. “What a vice president, senator, congressman, or Cabinet secretary does is far from what is required of a President.”

Philippine Daily News / Re: Aquino endorses Mar Roxas

Abad said this supposed image problem was merely cooked up by critics of Roxas.

“That’s what people who don’t play politics are accused of, that they’re a snob, that they’re not approachable,” he said, claiming also people would realize that that opposite was true whenever they got to see him more closely.

Aquino also came to Roxas’ defense in his speech endorsing the Interior Secretary at Club Filipino.

“I wonder: Is this part of the job description of a good leader? That, even when you exert all effort to do good, those in opposition will only ever see the bad?” he said.

MAR ‘ARTIFICIAL, FAKE’

Ramon Casiple of the Institute for Political and Electoral Reform said Roxas is suffering from an “image problem” -- the impression that he doesn’t really connect with the poor owing to his elitism.

“He comes off as artificial, he comes off as fake,” he said.

“He doesn’t carry sacks every day. People know that he did it only for PR [public relations],” he added, referring to one warehouse inspection when Roxas was seen carrying a sack of feeds for the cameras.

“People don’t see that as natural to him, that he can do it even without the camera.”

But Roxas remains largely unpopular despite opportunities and exposure he has been getting under the Aquino administration.

He lagged behind Sen. Grace Poe and Vice President Jejomar Binay in the last Pulse Asia and Social Weather Stations surveys for possible winners in next year’s presidential election.

The question now is: can Roxas actually win?

“Of course he can win,” Budget Secretary Florencio Abad of the Liberal Party insisted in an interview with ABS-CBN News.

Philippine Daily News / Re: Aquino endorses Mar Roxas

Roxas was supposed to run for President in 2010, but the death of Aquino’s well-loved mother, former President Corazon Aquino, convinced supporters that the son should shoot for the position.

Roxas gave in, a move he claimed was a “supreme sacrifice” on his part, as though the presidency is something given.

And riding mainly on the popularity of his late mother, and that of his father, former Sen. Benigno Aquino Jr., the younger Aquino won in 2010.

Now, the President talks about the need to continue what he had started the last five year. And his pick is Roxas.

Why Mar Roxas has an image problem

By Christian V. Esguerra, ABS-CBN News
08/01/2015

MANILA - Long-time presidential aspirant, Interior Secretary Mar Roxas, finally got his wish Thursday morning -- an unequivocal endorsement from President Aquino.

With the endorsement, it seems the so-called "sacrifice" made by Roxas in 2009 has finally paid off.

Not only will he benefit from Aquino’s popularity and whatever’s left of his political capital; he will also enjoy the political machinery of the ruling Liberal Party.

MANILA, Philippines â€" President Benigno Aquino III on Friday, July 31, endorsed Interior Secretary Manuel Roxas II as his preferred successor.

Speaking to Liberal Party members, allies, and supporters at the Club Filipino in San Juan, Aquino enumerated his basis for choosing his preferred presidential candidate. (READ: How much a factor is Aquino's endorsement?)

He then concluded: "Sa madaling salita, doon na po tayo sa siguradong itutuloy ang 'Daang Matuwid.' Ang paniniwala ko po, ang taong ito ay walang iba kung hindi sa Mar Roxas (In other words, let's go with someone who would surely continue the 'Straight Path.' Garin said such figure is not really surprising since hookworms are endemic in the country.

“Hookworms are actually endemic in the entire Philippines. Lahat po kasi nasa soil siya,” she said.

Belizario said schoolchildren with worms are prone to problems in their health and nutrition, as well as possible effects in their performances in school.

Intestinal worms can cause poor physical growth, poor intellectual development and impaired cognitive functions in children. (With HDT/Sunnex)

The National Deworming Day targets public school pupils from kindergarten to Grade 6, or children aged 5 to 12, said DOH Secretary Janette Garin.

DOH Undersecretary Vicente Belizario said they are looking at holding the activity twice a year, as deworming will not make children immune from parasitic worms.

At present, the DOH said about 66 percent of schoolchildren have soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) inside their bodies.

Zamboanga Sibugay Governor Wilter Palma said the schoolchildren vomited and suffered stomachache after taking the tablet.

Palma lamented that there was lack of information dissemination on the part of DOH, particularly on how to deal with various reactions to the medicine.

Constantino said it is highly possible that the children who suffered stomachache and vomited did not eat breakfast when they went to school.
#9132

About 204 others were treated as out-patients and were sent home, he added.

Constantino said that six of the 24 schoolchildren admitted are from the province of Zamboanga Sibugay, 13 in Pagadian, Zamboanga del Sur and five in Zamboanga del Norte.

DOH officials said the number of patients may increase as reports continue to come from the different parts of the region. As of 7 p.m. Wednesday, about 1,000 children who took the deworming tablet were reportedly rushed to hospitals.

Constantino said the out-patients were from the following areas: Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur, 20; Lakewood, Zamboanga del Sur, 55; Piñan, Zamboanga del Norte, 69; and, Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte, 60.

Deworming tablet downs hundreds of schoolchildren

ZAMBOANGA CITY -- A number of schoolchildren from different areas in Zamboanga Peninsula were hospitalized after taking a deworming tablet administered to them in line with the National Deworming Day on Wednesday, July 29.

The National Deworming Day is a joint project of the Department of Health (DOH) and Department of Education (DepEd) that aims to save children from parasitic intestinal worms. It targets to deworm 16 million schoolchildren nationwide, making it the "largest national deworming program in the world," according to World Health Organization representative to the Philippines Dr. Julie Hall.

But Dr. Ruby Constantino, DOH-Zamboanga Peninsula assistant director, said that based on initial report Wednesday afternoon, 24 schoolchildren were admitted in hospitals in the region due to "adverse effect" of the deworming tablet.

Chan’s photographs may seemingly depict an impossible (or at least one in a million) scene, but images of crows “riding” eagles abound online. In 2012, for example, Caters News photographer Hyeongchol Kim captured a similar occurrence in South Korea:

I saw the crow flying towards the much bigger eagle, and prepared myself to capture the fight on camera. However, the bird just hovered above the eagle for a few seconds â€" and then appeared to just latch onto his back.

The eagle didn’t seem to mind at all â€" I think they must have been friends.

As the largest bird of prey, eagles are harassed nonstop by birds of all species. Sometimes the hecklers are so persistent, it looks like the eagles “are being followed by mosquitoes,” says McGowan.

Phoo Chan, the bird photographer who snapped the photographs back in May 2014, offered a similar explanation on his 500px page:

Crows are known for aggressively harrassing other raptors that are much bigger in size when spotted in their territories and usually these ‘intruders’ simply retreat without much fuss.

However, in this frame the crow did not seem to harrass the bald eagle at such close proximity and neither did the bald eagle seem to mind the crow’s presence invading its personal space. What made it even more bizzare was that the crow even made a brief stop on the back of the eagle as if it was taking a free scenic ride and the eagle simply obliged.

Photos Unlimited / Re: Unusual hitcher

Although some viewers disclaimed the above-displayed photographs as depicting an aerodynamically impossible activity, according to Kevin McGowan, a biologist who specializes in crow behavior, they are indeed real:

“This would be kind of like a dog chasing a car and jumping up” on it, says McGowan. “Dogs always want to catch the car, but they never know what they’d do if they get it.”

But why didn’t the eagle react to the crow landing? Since the crow wasn’t pecking, it didn’t warrant the Eagle’s attention.

The development and upkeep of bridges is a community affair. Initially, a length of bamboo is secured across a river divide and a banyan plant, Ficus benghalensis is planted on each bank. Over the months and years, the roots and branches of the rapidly growing Ficus are trained along the bamboo until they meet in the middle and eventually supersede its support. At later stages in the evolution of the bridge, stones are inserted into the gaps and eventually become engulfed by the plant forming the beautiful walkways. Later still, the bridges are improved upon with the addition of hand rails and steps.

It’s always nice to see a religion that advocates kindness and respect, but that shouldn’t make it immune from criticism when it’s warranted. Jains are very bad at being self-critical, and it has plenty of beliefs that are untrue. I’d love to see a Jain organization, or blogger, or adherent offer up the evidence for their supernatural beliefs because I’m convinced there is none.
…
Note to my parents (who’ll probably never see this, anyway):

This is why I never had a desire for you to set me up with a “nice Jain girl.”

http://www.patheos.com/
#9172

They’ll do research in a lab one day, and then sing a chant praising prophets, saints, and “liberated souls” the next, without ever realizing the two worlds ought to be colliding. (I sang that particular mantra every day growing up. Can you imagine how I felt when I finally figured out what it actually meant?)

As far as religions go, Jainism isn’t the worst one you’ll find. But there are plenty of lies that it spreads that we need to call out. Young Jains should be concerned with the truth and they ought to know that the religious leaders in the temple are trying to lead them away from it â€" as most religious leaders everywhere do. The fact that even the most outspoken atheists put on kid gloves when dealing with it is upsetting.
#9173

Demi-gods, nirvana, “next lifetime,” karma? Those beliefs sound like something out of Scientology. But Jains take them very seriously.

The funny thing is that so many Jains go into scientific fields, and yet, I never hear Jains say this stuff is untrue. They find a way to compartmentalize it and ignore it. When you ask them what they believe, they’ll say “Non-violence”… but they won’t mention the several levels of Hell and multiple levels of Heaven.
#9174

An article profiling a Jain “nun” by Morgan Wilson in the Houston Chronicle shows just how absurd the faith can be:

“There are plenty of difference between Hinduism and Jainism; the biggest being the gods” said [Jainesh Mehta (no relation), vice president of the Jain Vishva Bharati-Preksha Meditation Center]. “Essentially, we don’t believe in the same things; we share eight demi-gods with Hinduism but even then we don’t worship them like a Hindu would. But we do have similar faith traits, that being giving up world materials to achieve Nirvana.”
…
“The karma you accumulate in this life and previous lifetimes will determine your condition for your next lifetime,” Mehta said. “We associate karma to be like a black cloud. The more karma you have the more ignorant you are; the less karma you have the more aware you’ve become.”
#9175

While the “non-violence” aspect is admirable, Jains still believe in plenty of b***:

# Jains believe in a never-ending, cyclical time cycle, with phases of “rising” and “falling” happiness. Each phase lasts several thousands of years. This is all fiction, of course.

# Jains believe that they can accumulate and shed karma and this impacts their future lives (reincarnation). There’s no evidence of this.

# Jains support being free of materialism â€" not because it can be destructive in and of itself, but because it’ll allow you to more easily break free from the cycle of reincarnation. They’re doing a good thing for the wrong reason.

# Jains don’t believe in a god, per se, but they do believe in supernatural beings who have broken free of the reincarnation cycle to attain Nirvana. In fact, there are 24 beings who have done that… and we know their names. We memorized their names as children. Though there’s no evidence any of them ever “attained Nirvana.”

# Jainism encourages an 8-day-long (or worse), unhealthy fasting during the holy time of the year. During the fast, you may only consume water that’s been pre-boiled.

# The Jain rules regarding a vegetarian diet seem like they’re made up on the spot. Eggs are bad, but milk is ok. Potatoes and other food from the ground are bad, but there are exceptions depending on the day. Alcohol is forbidden, but young Jains go to bars all the time. The rules make hypocrisy rampant… but almost unavoidable.
#9176

Even Richard Dawkins said as much in a 2007 interview with Terrence McNally:

TM: In other words, if it were just a philosophical belief that had no impact on the world, fine.

RD: Exactly. I don’t think you’ll find many people criticizing any gentle religion, like Jainism.

It’s true â€" You rarely see criticism of Jainism. But if we’re concerned with spreading the truth instead of religious beliefs, we shouldn’t stay silent. So what’s wrong with Jainism?

A lot. I know because I grew up in the faith and my parents still practice it.

The Problems with Jainism

July 3, 2011
by Guest Contributor

I don’t write about my parent’s religion here very often, but since this weekend marks the 16th Biennial Jaina Convention, we might as well discuss Jainism.

For those who don’t know, Jainism’s major tenet is non-violence. If you know anything about Jainism, that’s what you know about it. Unfortunately, that one idea seems to negate all the other nonsense Jainism propagates.

Sam Harris wrote about the non-violence aspect of Jainism in The End of Faith (where he argued that even moderate religions were harmful):

A rise of Jain fundamentalism would endanger no one. In fact, the uncontrollable spread of Jainism throughout the world would improve our situation immensely. We would lose more of our crops to pests, perhaps (observant Jains generally will not kill anything, including insects), but we would not find ourselves surrounded by suicidal terrorists or by a civilization that widely condones their actions.

A new sculpture unveiled by members of the St Petersburg Cossacks on Saturday portrayed Vladimir Putin in a new guise: that of a Roman emperor.

Designed by the St. Petersburg artist Pavel Greshnikov, the bust shows Mr Putin in a toga and breastplate striking a pose more associated with Julius Caesar.

Mr Greshnikov reportedly settled on the Roman outfit after experimenting with different looks including knight’s armour.

Subic Bay is 198 kilometres (123 miles) east of Scarborough Shoal.

The Philippines said Wednesday it was also repairing a crumbling ship serving as its lonely outpost in the disputed waters.

The move, which will ensure the rust-eaten World War II-vintage BRP Sierra Madre remains livable for a tiny unit of marines guarding Second Thomas Shoal, was lambasted by China, who branded the Philippines a "hypocritical troublemaker and rule breaker".

China claims most of the South China Sea -- home to strategically vital shipping lanes and believed to be rich in oil and gas -- and is currently pursuing a rapid programme of artificial island construction in the region.

The Philippines is among the most vocal critics of China's claims, and has asked a United Nations-backed tribunal to declare China's claim over most of the South China Sea as illegal.

Following a stand-off between Chinese ships and the weak Filipino Navy in 2012, China took control of a rich fishing ground called Scarborough Shoal that is within the Philippines' exclusive economic zone.

The Philippine military has recently leased back some of those facilities from the government authority that manages the business zone, presidential spokesman Herminio Coloma said.

Last year, Manila signed an agreement giving its defence ally the United States more access to Filipino military facilities, as part of plans by the poorly equipped Filipino forces to attain a deterrent capability.

However this deal, under which US forces could potentially have regained use of Subic Bay, has been postponed amid a legal challenge now being heard by the Supreme Court.

"Its location is very strategic," Galvez said, referring to its position facing the South China Sea, which Manila calls the West Philippine Sea.

"If we need to deploy to the West Philippine Sea, it (Subic) is already there, we do not deny that. It's a deepwater port."

After the Americans left, the sprawling base about two hours' drive north of Manila was converted into a trading zone and industrial hub with tax concessions for businesses who set up shop.

Philippines to re-open former US base amid China sea row

The Philippines said Thursday it would re-open a former US naval base that was closed more than 20 years ago, stationing its own military hardware at the facility that faces the flashpoint South China Sea.

The announcement comes as the Philippines is embroiled in a bitter dispute with China over rival claims to parts of the sea, including a rich fishing shoal close to the military base.

Defence department spokesman Peter Galvez said the Philippines would station aircraft and naval vessels at Subic Bay, which was one of the US military's biggest overseas bases until it closed in 1992.

send her a tequila on valentine's day...

Bottled Gems

Besides granting us festive Cinco de Mayo memories (or taking them away), tequila has added awesomeness in its ability to be turned into diamonds. Scientists have found that if they heated an unaged 80-proof tequila, the vapor would form diamond films on a silicon or stainless steel surface.

The self-deprecating 68-year-old made several jokes about Trump's appearance, mainly his hair, which he repeatedly referred to as "that thing on his head," and managed to slip in several "send him to Texas" quips, though a few have been omitted from the list below.

10. "That thing on his head was the gopher in 'Caddyshack.'"

9. "During sex, Donald Trump calls out his own name."

8.  "Donald Trump looks like the guy in the lifeboat with the women and children."

7. "He wants to build a wall? How about building the wall around that thing on his head."

6. "Trump walked away from a moderately successful television show for some delusional [reason]. Oh, no, wait, that's me."

5. "Donald Trumps weighs 240 pounds, 250 with cologne."

4. "Donald Trump would like all Americans to know that that thing on his head is free-range."

No. 3 was a three-way tie: "Send him to Texas."

"If president, instead of pardoning a turkey on Thanksgiving, he plans to evict a family on Thanksgiving."

That's not a hairdo, it's a wind advisory."

2. "Donald Trump has pissed off so many Mexicans, he's starring in a new movie titled 'No Amigos.'"

1. "Thanks to Donald Trump, the Republican mascot is also an ass."

This isn't the first time Letterman and Trump have been at odds. The "Celebrity Apprentice" host canceled an appearance on the late-night show (and his delivery of a Top 10 list) in May 2011 over allegations of racism that stemmed from Trump raising doubt over President Obama's citizenship.

David Letterman delivers a Donald Trump-centric Top 10 at live show

David Letterman resurfaced over the weekend to chide Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

Trump shot to the top of the polls despite his controversial remarks about Mexican immigrants, and the former "Late Show" host, who signed off the air in May, joked that he didn't regret his retirement until the real estate mogul announced his White House bid last month.

The now-bearded comic hit the stage at a live comedy show in San Antonio and resurrected his signature Top 10 list by enumerating "Interesting Facts About Donald Trump." It wasn't the star-studded affair that his last Top 10 list was, but the prickly comic still got an assist from "Three Amigos" stars Martin Short and Steve Martin, who appeared onstage with him.

Admiral Harry Harris, the new commander of the U.S. Pacific Command   Â© Kyodo

TOKYO -- Admiral Harry Harris, the new commander of the U.S. Pacific Command, is in the spotlight amid maritime tensions in the South China Sea and elsewhere.

Harris, of Japanese descent, is the first Asian-American to rise to the rank of admiral in the U.S. Navy. Although there are many people of Japanese descent active in the world, there are probably none who are entrusted with as much authority and responsibilities as the 59-year-old U.S. admiral.

But the BBC's Rupert Wingfield-Hayes says that the opposition is expected to launch legal challenges to rule the bills as unconstitutional.

Our correspondent says those in Japan who oppose the bills believe they break Japan's explicitly pacifist constitution and also distrust Mr Abe, who is known for his right-wing nationalist views.

Organisers of a large protest which took place outside parliament on Wednesday night said about 100,000 people showed up.

"I'm angry at both the new security bill and Prime Minister Abe. The bill is against Japan's constitution... Abe does not understand it," student Jinshiro Motoyama told the BBC.

Mr Abe first put the changes in motion last year when he sought to reinterpret Japan's pacifist constitution to allow the bills.

Most of the opposition lawmakers walked out of the lower house chamber in protest before the vote took place on Thursday, with only members of the small Japan Restoration Party voting against the bills.

Mr Abe's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and its coalition partners hold a two-thirds majority in the lower house, which is needed to approve bills.

The upper house, where the LDP and partners also hold a majority, now has 60 days to rule on the bills. Even if it rejects them, the bills would be sent back to the lower house which can then pass them into law.

What is collective self-defence?

Japan's post-World War Two constitution bars it from using force to resolve conflicts except in cases of self-defence.

Mr Abe's government has pushed for a change that would revise the laws such that Japan's military would be able to mobilise overseas when these three conditions are met:

#when Japan is attacked, or when a close ally is attacked, and the result threatens Japan's survival and poses a clear danger to people

#when there is no other appropriate means available to repel the attack and ensure Japan's survival and protect its people

#use of force is restricted to a necessary minimum

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has pushed for the two bills, arguing it is necessary to expand the role of the military in a doctrine called collective self-defence.

But polls show more than half of Japanese citizens oppose them.

Reacting to the passing of the bills, China's foreign affairs ministry spokesman Hua Chunying questioned if Japan was "abandoning its pacifist policies", and urged Japan to "stick to the path of peaceful development" and avoid harming the region's stability.

South Korea has similarly in the past urged Japan to "contribute to regional peace and security" and called for transparency in Japan's defence policy discussions.
