Most importantly, let’s learn to stop saying there’s no hope for this Philippines and start seeing what’s right in front of all of us: our people â€" the genuine hope for this country’s progress.

I’ve seen that hope countless times, Mr President, and it has the power to change things and move more people. It’s the same hope I see in faces on the streets and faces in profile pictures. It’s the same hope that tells me that our progress as a country isn’t a delusion, but rather a result of definitive action from all of us.

So long as that hope exists in our people, I will always be more than willing to carry bottles of water under the rain for it â€" because that’s exactly what this country needs: people to hope, and people to act on it.

Thank you very much, President Noy.

Yes, we take selfies, but we also give our take on who should and shouldn’t run for the presidency in 2016. Yes, we share posts from 9-Gag and BuzzFeed, but we share our frustrations and joys also with the links of local and international news articles. Yes, we sometimes post about our sadness and anger every so often, but we always express our disgust and intolerance for anything closely related to corruption, and discrimination involving gender, sexuality, and religion.

We have the means to make more informed choices now, and our generations have so much to learn from each other if we can all be humble enough to do so.

Let’s learn how to communicate without the use of hate. Let’s learn from the visit of Pope Francis, his mercy and compassion, and not leave that responsibility solely to the CBCP. Let’s learn together and finally put an end to this tolerance for corruption and irresponsibility with the environment.

A Millennial’s promise

As a part of the next generation that has on its shoulders the name of the Philippines in the years to come, I want to let you know that one thing we’re already very good at is speaking out. We’re a very vocal generation.

Some may take this to mean we’re a very vain generation, given our social media pages filled with photos and statuses. Maybe that’s true for some cases â€" but if you turn toward the bigger picture, we show you a generation of people no longer scared to express an opinion, no matter how small.

We now we have voices, and we now know we have the means to make them louder. We now have the means to be heard.

He explained how his near-papacy experience made him popular with the media and, in turn, raised the status of Filipinos all over the world. He explained how he didn’t enjoy the attention but that his coverage managed to uplift other Filipinos from their own experiences of suffering. In his own words: “Hindi pala yun para sa akin.” (It wasn't for me.)

At a time when people think there is no hope for our country, I am reminded not to believe that, because I’ve seen that hope first-hand; and it’s rooted in its people, the Filipino people.

In your speech, you thanked my generation for helping contribute to the progress of this country. I hope I can speak for the most of the millennial generation when I say we are honored to share the responsibility of building this country with you, President Noy.

Growing up in this day and age, I experience first-hand the rampancy of hearing that “there’s no hope for this country.” Yet, there I was on a random Monday night, working on a presentation, minding my own business, and receiving a flurry of messages from several of my friends â€" all during the actual airing time of the SONA.

When I got home that night, I even went through the posts and noticed timestamps from all the notifications. I realized they were also all during the time you were speaking.

In the midst of a widespread culture of hate in this country, I am reminded that my generation â€" the millennial generation, does care about the welfare of the Philippines. In the midst of all the attention a single photo has garnered, I am reminded of the moving words Cardinal Tagle shared back in 2013 during my graduation.

“X people posted on your wall,” “X people like a photo on your wall,” “X people mentioned you…” was all over my feed. Friend requests from people I’ve never met were coming in, and several posts and photos I still haven’t managed to reply to up to this day remain unanswered. I had never received this much attention, and it remains the craziest experience I’ve ever had with social media in my life.

This is what one photo can now do in this generation, Mr President. And after an experience this daunting, only one thing comes to mind for me to say to you: I owe you a very big thank you â€" but not for the 15 seconds of fame.

I’ll be honest when I say I was very touched by the short time under the spotlight. There’s no denying that. But, as I wrote on my own Facebook wall, what continues to fill my heart with great joy is knowing that so many people in my generation were actually watching the SONA that day.

While that commotion was happening, another friend was calling me up. Along with those two calls, my phone kept on vibrating from an influx of text messages and notifications that were coming in so fast I had to put the phone down.

About just 2 minutes after that call, I had over 20-something text messages and I kept receiving even more notifications from Facebook, Viber, and Twitter. There was so much coming in that I had to turn my phone off for a while just to save the battery because I still had a dinner to attend.

When I finally made it home, I was ready to check that photo of me you used in your presentation and see the fuss that came with it. Once I got my laptop running, and in the span of a few hours of dinner, I had never seen so many notifications in my life.

Dear President Noy,

You spent over a good 2 hours last Monday telling the story of the Philippines’ progress over the past 5 years. I thank you very much for your hard work, and I hope you’ll allow me to return the favor by telling you a story this time.

This particular one takes place on the 27th of July 2015. You were obviously delivering your final State of the Nation Address (SONA) near Batasang Pambansa with the entire nation’s eyes and ears on youâ€" while I, on the other hand, was at a quiet restaurant, table-for-one, working on a presentation.

I was just getting ready to head out when, all of a sudden, at 5:59 pm, my friend Albert started calling me on the phone. I immediately picked it up and on the other end he just kept shouting over and over again, “Nasa SONA ka! Nasa SONA ka!” (You're at the SONA!)

354-kph Supertyphoon ‘Hanna’ to hit PH

By: Dona Z. Pazzibugan
Philippine Daily Inquirer
01:44 AM August 5th, 2015

What has developed into the world’s strongest typhoon so far this year will enter the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) on Wednesday morning but will spare the country from landfall.

The weather bureau placed the maximum sustained winds of Supertyphoon “Hanna” (international name: Soudelor) at least 220 kilometers per hour, but the US Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) in Honolulu said the storm was packing gusts up to 354 kph.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Hanna, the eighth cyclone to visit the country this year, would trigger heavy monsoon rains over most of Luzon and the Visayas over the weekend.

As of Tuesday, the cyclone already bore maximum sustained winds of 215 kph and gusts up to 250 kph and will likely intensify further as it barrels across the Pacific Ocean.

“It will possibly be a supertyphoon when it enters the Philippine area of responsibility on Wednesday morning. This is the strongest [typhoon] this year,” said state meteorologist Buddy Javier.

Pagasa categorizes as supertyphoons those that reach maximum sustained winds of at least 220 kph.

The storm was roaring across the western Pacific Ocean packing wind gusts up to 354 kph, according to the JTWC, which rated it a maximum Category 5.

The Post notes that the resolved dispute will is a major source of fear and anger to others. For most citizens, the land swap means abandoning the land that has been their homes for generations or changing their nationality.

Most will stay in their homes, but about 1,000 Indians have decided to keep their nationality, meaning they will have to move out by November.

In Dahala-Khagrabari many Indian Muslims decided to become Bangladeshi and celebrated their new nationality. Hindus on the other hand were fearful of the change as some of their homes were recently torched. Among those leaving, most of them do so because of economic or religious reasons.

The swap is also tearing families apart as some people are not agreeing on where to live, while others having married a person from one or the other nationality are not eligible to relocate. Others, having been left out of a 2011 census, are also ineligible for relocation, and some might even lose their lands as a result of the swap.

In any case, after India left the British Empire in 1947, problems began for the enclave’s citizens.

For example, citizens of a Bangladeshi enclave would technically need a visa to enter the country surrounding the enclave (India) â€" but to get the visa they would have to go to a major city in Bangladesh, which they could not do without illegally transiting through India. Before Saturday, even going to the market could be problematic.

One of the enclaves, Dahala Khagrabari, was the only third-order enclave in the world, meaning it was an Indian enclaves, surrounded by a Bangladeshi enclave, surrounded by an Indian enclave in Bangladesh.

No one is sure as to exactly how this odd border dispute came to be: Some say it was the result of a chess game, others says it was because of an ink spill on a map by a drunk British colonial. Both stories are probably more akin to legend than history.

Here’s a look at the region:

And here’s a look closer look at the clusters of enclaves:

The border dispute surrounding 162 Indian and Bangladeshi enclaves ended on Saturday at one minute past midnight, Adam Taylor of The Washington Post reports.

The two countries switched sovereignty over 111 enclaves in Bangladesh and 51 in India following a border agreement struck in June, the AFP reports, ending a 68-year-old dispute affecting the lives of over 50.000 people.

The June agreement had originally been reached in 2011, but it’s taken four years for both countries to sign it.

The odd couple: North Korea and Indonesia

By webadmin on 12:01 pm Jul 23, 2012

“Misery,” wrote William Shakespeare, “acquaints a man with strange bedfellows.” Most pundits today would say it’s not misery but politics ― especially geopolitics ― that makes strange bedfellows. Almost invariably they would cite the strange case of North Korea and Indonesia.

There is indeed a huge difference between North Korea and Indonesia. One is l’enfant terrible of international affairs. The other is a global activist for democracy, an emerging economic power that would reform the world financial architecture. But there is undeniably a friendship between the two countries.

Thus the president of the Presidium of the Supreme People’s Council of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Kim Yong-nam, paid an official visit to Jakarta recently. He came representing not only the living but also the dead: the Eternal President of North Korea is still officially its founder, Kim Il-sung, a great and close friend of Indonesia’s founding president, Sukarno. Popular legend has it that he is not dead. He merely hiked off to the hills to get some sleep.

Piggy later bragged, “Dating moi is like flying close to the sun. It was inevitable that Kermit would drop down to the ground while I stayed in the heavens.”

Outside of all the romantic entanglements talk… Prady offered the new show’s backstory, saying, “We tried a version of this about eight years ago but it wasn’t timed right.” When he and EP Bob Kushell circled back with ABC this spring, “There was immediate enthusiasm for the project” â€" so much so that the network lobbied hard for a fast-tracked pilot (ultimately a 10-minute “presentation”) to be considered for the 2015-16 TV season.

Prady says The Muppets will offer “unfettered access” to the puppets’ personal lives. To which Kermit shrugged, “I tried to fetter it â€" but it didn’t work out.”

“It can be tough to work with your ex,” he explained. “There will be an official statement released in the press (see below). I don’t want to betray anything.”

Egged on by Muppets EP/co-showrunner Bill Prady, Kermit confirmed that he is now dating another pig, named Denise and who “works in marketing” at ABC.

Piggy herself then showed up at the panel, fashionably late and most curious to hear which version of the breakup story Kermit had told the TCA members. Asked how the split might affect the series â€" which will take us behind the scenes of a new talk show called Up Late With Miss Piggy â€" she argued, “Any kind of attention is good publicity.”

Unusually heavy moonsoon rain poured into Myanmar starting from 16 July and making rivers and creeks overflow with rainwater. It flooded river basins as well as areas around the creeks. It was the worst flood to happen in Myanmar in recent decades. Some people accused heavy rain, mismanagement of irrigation projects and deforestration caused by mindless logging in recent decades. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, in comments likely to provoke regional neighbours and Washington, said the United States and the Philippines should "count how many runways there are in the South China Sea and who built them first."

In a front page commentary on the overseas edition of the Communist Party's official People's Daily, a senior academic said that the U.S. was teaming up with Japan to "disrupt" the South China Sea.

"Japan has been cooperating with the United States to hype up the 'China threat', making noise for their alliance to interfere in the South China Sea," Su Xiaohui, a senior researcher at the Foreign Ministry-backed China Institute of International Studies, wrote.

"This is not beneficial to regional peace and stability."

China claims most of the South China Sea, through which $5 trillion in ship-borne trade passes every year. The Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei have overlapping claims.

China has shown no sign of halting its construction of artificial islands in disputed waters.

It has also accused the United States of militarizing the South China Sea by staging patrols and joint military drills, while the United States has called for a halt in China's artificial island building in the area.

In opening remarks on Tuesday, Malaysia Foreign Minister Anifah Aman said that ASEAN should play a major role in reaching an "amicable" solution in the disputed waters.

"BEYOND PHILOSOPHICAL DISCUSSIONS"

Singapore's Foreign Minister K. Shanmugam told reporters in Kuala Lumpur that the South China Sea could not be ignored, adding that Singapore was not happy with an informal code of conduct signed by ASEAN and China in 2002.

"We have got to move beyond philosophical discussions to actually say what is in the substance of the agreement."

His comments come a day after China said it did not want the contentious theme discussed at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) gathering.

Neither China nor the United States are members of the regional body, but both will be represented during several days of talks in the Malaysian capital. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry will be in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday and Thursday.

"The Philippines fully supports and will pro-actively promote the call of the United States on the '3 halts': halt in reclamation, halt in construction, and halt in aggressive actions that could further heighten tensions," Del Rosario said in a statement.

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - The Philippines will back a U.S. call to halt land reclamation in disputed areas of the South China Sea, the country's foreign minister said on Tuesday, despite China's insistence that the issue should not be raised at an upcoming meeting.

Foreign Minister Albert Del Rosario said the Philippines was ready to help de-escalate tensions in the disputed region, if China and other claimant states agreed to be bound by the same conditions.

Del Rosario added that the Philippines planned to discuss the topic at the 48th ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting, which kicked off in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday.

A lenticular cloud over New Hampshire

Why does this cloud look so strange?  Actually, pictured above are several clouds all stacked up into one striking lenticular cloud.  Normally, air moves much more horizontally than it does vertically.  Sometimes, however, such as when wind comes off of a mountain or a hill, relatively strong vertical oscillations take place as the air stabilizes.  The dry air at the top of an oscillation may be quite stratified in moisture content, and hence forms clouds at each layer where the air saturates with moisture.  The result can be a lenticular cloud with a strongly layered appearance.  The above picture was taken in 1999 over Plymouth, New Hampshire, USA.

A Morning Glory cloud formation between Burketown and Normanton, Australia.

The Morning Glory cloud is a rare meteorological phenomenon consisting of a low-level atmospheric solitary wave and associated cloud, occasionally observed in different locations around the world. The wave often occurs as an amplitude-ordered series of waves forming bands of roll clouds.

The southern part of the Gulf of Carpentaria in Northern Australia is the only known location where it can be predicted and observed on a more or less regular basis due to the configuration of land and sea in the area. (wikipedia)

Undulatus asperatus

Undulatus asperatus (or alternately, asperitas) is a cloud formation, proposed in 2009 as a separate cloud classification by the founder of the Cloud Appreciation Society. If successful it will be the first cloud formation added since cirrus intortus in 1951 to the International Cloud Atlas of the World Meteorological Organization.

The name translates approximately as "roughened or agitated waves".

The ominous-looking clouds have been particularly common in the Plains states of the United States, often during the morning or midday hours following convective thunderstorm activity. (wikipedia)

One of the rarest weather phenomena, Mammatus Clouds. Photo taken by John C. Olsen in Hastings, NE

What Are Mammatus Clouds?

Mammatus are pouch-like cloud structures. They're also a rare example of clouds in sinking air-- most clouds form in rising air. Although mammatus most frequently form on the underside of a cumulonimbus, they can develop underneath cirrocumulus, altostratus, altocumulus and stratocumulus.

For a mammatus to form, the sinking air must be cooler than the air around it and have high liquid water or ice content. They derive their name from their appearance, like the bag-like sacs that hang beneath the cloud resemble cow's udders.

Mammatus are long-lived if the sinking air contains large drops and snow crystals since larger particles require greater amounts of energy for evaporation to occur. Over time, the cloud droplets do eventually evaporate and the mammatus dissolve.

Despite popular misconception, mammatus clouds are not a sign that a tornado is about to form. While associated with thunderstorms, mammatus clouds are not necessarily an indicator of severe weather. Mammatus result from the sinking of moist air into dry air. They are in essence upside-down clouds. The sharp boundary of mammatus is much like the sharp boundary of a rising cumulonimbus cloud before an anvil has formed.

"The most recent blue moon that was truly blue in hue was in Edinburgh, Scotland, in September 1950. Astronomer Robert Wilson of the Royal Observatory observed the event and concluded that the moon was blue in color because the satellite’s light was traveling through a patch of clouds that had particles of smoke and ash from forest fires burning in Alberta, Canada. Those particles crossed the Atlantic Ocean and hovered over Scotland during the lunar event, creating a rare spectacle, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.”

Origin of the term

The suggestion has been made that the term "blue moon" for "intercalary month" arose by folk etymology, the "blue" replacing the no-longer-understood belewe, 'to betray'.

The original meaning would then have been "betrayer moon", referring to a full moon that would "normally" (in years without an intercalary month) be the full moon of spring, while in an intercalary year, it was "traitorous" in the sense that people would have had to continue fasting for another month in accordance with the season of Lent. A blue moon is an additional full moon that appears in a subdivision of a year: either the third of four full moons in a season, or a second full moon in a month of the common calendar. (wikipedia)

Blue moon of the December 2009 lunar eclipse

The phrase has nothing to do with the actual color of the moon, although a literal "blue moon" (the moon appearing with a tinge of blue) may occur in certain atmospheric conditions: e.g., when there are volcanic eruptions or when exceptionally large fires leave particles in the atmosphere.

This Is How People In China Are Riding Escalators After A Horrific Accident

People who have to ride escalators are rightly freaking out in the wake of the recent fatality.

A short video of a mother's fatal fall into a hole atop an escalator â€" moments after she saved her son â€" has been pulling at viewers' heartstrings since it was released last Sunday.

But as horrifying as it was, the tragedy captured on security cameras was only the first of three high-profile incidents that happened on Chinese escalators and elevators over the last week.

The central government has ordered all its provincial authorities to ensure that escalators in every mall are functioning properly by Aug. 10. Chinese citizens are meanwhile taking no chances. Images and videos of their ways of dealing with escalator-phobia, being shared on Chinese social media (and excerpted here by BuzzFeed), range from practical to hilarious to risky.

According to the website china.org.cn â€" a government portal run by the State Council Information Office â€" figures from the China Elevator Association show that more than half of all accidents involving elevators and escalators are connected to maintenance and repair neglect.

Zhang Huaiji, an engineer with the Shenzhen Institute of Special Equipment Inspection and Testing, told the site that there were not enough inspectors for China’s many escalators and elevators, and added that low wages and long hours were leading many maintenance workers to leave the field.

These three accidents have led to heightened concerns and scrutiny of the country’s aging escalators and elevators, many of which are not up to acceptable safety standards. A report by the country’s Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ), cited by the state Xinhua news agency, found that more than 110,000 escalators have potential safety issues of which over 26,000 have not yet been repaired.

The AQSIQ said there were 49 escalator accidents in 2014 that claimed 37 lives, the Global Times said, citing Xinhua. The accidents were generally caused by poor design, the use of substandard materials, installation and maintenance, China Elevator Association official Zhang Lexiang told the Global Times.

A woman walks next to escalators at a department store in Shanghai

Experts warn of poorly maintained, aging equipment and not enough inspectors

Exactly a week earlier, video of 30-year-old mother Xian Liujuan went around the world after the escalator she was traveling on, in a department store in the central province of Hubei, suddenly gave way. She was able to push her young son before being sucked into the machinery and killed. On Friday, a toddler’s arm got caught in an escalator, this time at a mall in the southern Guangxi region, when he tripped after wandering away from his parents. His mangled arm was pulled out 30 minutes later.

Chinese mother saves son seconds before falling to death inside escalator

By Steven Jiang, CNN
Tue, July 28, 2015

Beijing (CNN) â€" Security camera footage has emerged of a mother saving her young son's life seconds before losing her own on an escalator in China.

The 30-second video begins innocently enough: As the escalator in a shopping mall almost reaches the top, a woman in a white shirt and black skirt lifts up her young son to get ready to step off.

But as she does, a metal panel suddenly collapses under her feet and she falls into the gap.

Struggling with only her upper body above the structure, the mother is seen pushing her son forward. The boy is quickly pulled to safety by a mall employee standing near the top of the escalator.

Two other mall employees try to drag the trapped woman out -- but within a few seconds she disappears through the hole, into the escalator shaft.

Despite a four-hour rescue operation at the upscale AZG Mall in central China, firefighters declared the woman dead when they finally cut the escalator open and found her body Sunday afternoon (July 27 PHT), state media reported.

Quote from: islander on August 01, 2015, 01:52:13 PM
unsolicited advice to presidential contender mar roxas:  hide your wife, please.  she is your political albatross.

The word albatross is sometimes used metaphorically to mean a psychological burden that feels like a curse.

It is an allusion to Samuel Taylor Coleridge's poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner (1798).

In the poem, an albatross starts to follow a ship â€" being followed by an albatross was generally considered an omen of good luck. However, the titular mariner shoots the albatross with a crossbow, which is regarded as an act that will curse the ship (which indeed suffers terrible mishaps).

Even when they are too thirsty to speak, the ship's crew let the mariner know through their glances that they blame his action for the curse. He feels as though the albatross is metaphorically hung around his neck - that is, when people look at him, they see him as the albatross killer and that weighs on him. Thus the albatross can be both an omen of good or bad luck, as well as a metaphor for a burden to be carried as penance. (wikipedia)
