Why is Yoga incompatible with Catholicism?

BY:FATHER JOHN HARDON, S.J.

Yoga is incompatible with Catholicism because the best known practice of Hindu spirituality is Yoga. “Inner” Hinduism professes pantheism, which denies that there is only one infinite Being who created the world out of nothing.

Yoga is incompatible with Catholicism because the best known practice of Hindu spirituality is Yoga. “Inner” Hinduism professes pantheism, which denies that there is only one infinite Being who created the world out of nothing. This pantheistic Hinduism says to the multitude of uncultured believers who follow the ways of the gods that they will receive the reward of the gods. They will have brief tastes of heaven between successive rebirths on earth. But they will never be delivered from the “wheel of existence” with its illusory lives and deaths until they realize that only “God” exists and all else is illusion (Maya). To achieve this liberation the principal way is by means of concentration and self control (yoga).
Indian spirituality is perhaps best known by the practice of yoga, derived from the root yuj to unite or yoke, which in context means union with the Absolute. Numerous stages are distinguished in the upward progress toward the supreme end of identification: by means of knowledge with the deity; the practice of moral virtues and observance of ethical rules; bodily postures; control of internal and external senses; concentration of memory and meditationâ€"finally terminating in total absorption (samadhi), “when the seer stands in his own nature.”

Although the psychic element is far more important in yoga than the body, the latter is more characteristic of this method of Hindu liberation. Its purpose is to secure the best disposition of body for the purpose of meditation. The practice begins with a simple device for deep and slow breathing.

Stopping the right nostril with the thumb, through the left nostril fill in air, according to capacity. Then without any interval, throw the air out through the right nostril, eject through the left, according to capacity. Practicing this three or five times at four hours of the day, before dawn, during midday, in the evening, and at midnight, in fifteen days or a month purity of the nerves is attained.

After such preliminary exercises, more complicated practices are undertaken, but not without the guidance of a professional yogin, called guru. The meditative phase begins with fixing the mind on one object, which may be anything whatsoever, “the sphere of the navel, the lotus of the heart, the light of the brain, the tip of the nose, the tip of the tongue, and such like parts of the body” or also “God”, who on Hindu terms is the only real being who exists.

Gradually by sheer concentration of attention; the mind reaches a state of trance, where all mental activity stops and the consciousness rests in itself. The state of samadhi is the culmination of yoga and beyond it lies release. The life of the soul is not destroyed but is reduced to its “unconscious and permanent essence.”

For mothers who are Roman Catholic, it is important to raise children as Roman Catholics. Even if the spouse is not Roman Catholic, there is the beautiful hope that, through the Grace of the Holy Spirit, their conversion into the One, Holy, Roman Catholic Church will be made manifest. That in union with Holy Mother Church, they shall take part in the Communion of the Saints.  8)

Contrary to common suspicion that taking too much of something might have a downside to it, study shows that oddly its not the same story for people who take Aspirin on a regular basis.

Although the effect may only be seen in the far future for some, taking Aspirin every other day for some people just meant sparing themselves from stomach and bowel cancers. Researchers from Harvard University found out that people, women in particular, who have been taking at least 100mg of pain killer tablets every other day are over 40 percent less at risk of these sort of cancers, after a couple decades that is. Although more tests are to be conducted by the research team to narrow down the specific demography to benefit this, they also warn not to start feeding on Aspirin regularly if not necessary as it also has adverse side-effects when taken recklessly.

Patients with hypercholesterolemia, hypermegakaryocytemia, patients with a history of myocardial injury and cerebrovascular accidents are recommended to take aspirin chronically.

Would you rather have an ulcer or heart attack/ stroke?

During an over-night shift, I had cared for a hospice patient. She was dying of renal failure. She had very kind and comforting eyes. When i was making my rounds and checking her vitals and her pain, as I was adjusting her morphine levels, she touched my arm then tugged on my white coat. She said to me in a very raspy and faded voice, "Can you pray with me?"

So i did. I sat next to her. She took out her rosary and together we prayed. She thanked me, i looked at her and said, "You take care of yourself, okay?" I smiled and she smiled back at me.

Couple of hours later, i checked on her, and found the nurses turning off her ekg monitor. She had passed. I remember looking at her, her eyes were closed, and her face looked as if she was in peace. No more pain.

She was still holding the rosary in her hand.

after shouting for the doctor, the next thing i knew was that i was holding prayer booklets for the dying, shaking and praying all i can by the bedside.

i'm still amazed over why it had to be me who had to close my father's eyes with my own hands.  he must have heard my prayer offering, and i am glad.

The sweet sound of his daughter's voice that ushered his soul a sense of peace before his soul entered into life everlasting. The last sound your father heard before he left this world, my dear Isles, was the sound of your voice. Know that it gave him comfort and spiritual strength before he was called to the judgment seat of Christ.

May God bless you.

Brod Vince,

When a person dies, all the senses fade. The last of the senses to fade is the sense of hearing. It is said that the sense of hearing is still present some 5 minutes after death. If you had talked to your Lola Berta within that 5 minute period, she most probably heard you and the relatives around her.

That is why when a person dies, it is good to talk to them immediately after death. Because they can still hear  you. They can still hear you some 5-10 minutes after their moment of physical death. After 10 minutes, wala na.

Eternal silence.

Last year, I was caring for a patient who was comatose for several months; his family had came to visit him hours prior. His family came to say to say good bye to him.

The RN who was caring for the patient said to the patient, "Its okay now, you can go now...its okay to go..."

Within 30 minutes, the patient passed.

I was there when the nurse said that because I remember writing some notes in that room. 5 minutes after the patient was declared dead, the board in his room fell down, and the chairs that was next to his bed was pushed out of the way by something. I saw this and so did 2 other nurses in the room.

One of the RNs said, "Wow, his spirit is so strong!"

I remember the hairs on my back rising when she said that. :P

Na apektahan gayod ko when she died of multi-organ failure secondary to her CHF. When i had to tell the patient's family, the sight of her children, and her husband crying really affected me. Sakit atong kasingkasing seeing her child looking at me and saying, "Can you please, please bring my mommy back?"

You know, one time when I was doing my General Surgery rotation at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, the Colo-rectal surgeon told me, "Lorenzo, i need all the fecal samples of these 10 patients." We were testing for occult blood. So, as a General Surgery intern, it was my duty to retrieve rectal samples. At the time, I was still new and i was aided by a veteran med tech named Dianne. JOHANNESBURG - A South African man awoke to find himself in a morgue fridge - nearly a day after his family thought he had died, a health official said Monday.

Health department spokesman Sizwe Kupelo said the man awoke Sunday afternoon, 21 hours after his family called in an undertaker who sent him to the morgue after an asthma attack.

Morgue owner Ayanda Maqolo said he sent his driver to collect the body shortly after the family reported the death. Maqolo said he thought the man was around 80 years old.

"When he got there, the driver examined the body, checked his pulse, looked for a heartbeat, but there was nothing," Maqolo told the Associated Press.

But a day after staff put the body into a locked refrigerated compartment, morgue workers heard someone shouting for help. They thought it was a ghost, the morgue owner said.

"I couldn't believe it!" Maqolo said. "I was also scared. But they are my employees and I had to show them I wasn't scared, so I called the police."

After police arrived, the group entered the morgue together.

"I was glad they had their firearms, in case something wanted to fight with us," Maqolo said.

He said the man was pale when they pulled him out.

"He asked, 'How did I get here?"' Maqolo said.

The health department said the man was then taken to a nearby hospital for observation and later discharged by doctors who deemed him stable.

Kupelo, the health department spokesman, urged South Africans to call on health officials to confirm that their relatives are really dead.

The man's family was informed that he was alive during a family meeting convened to make funeral arrangements. They're very happy to have him home, Maqolo said.

But Maqolo said he is still trying to recover from the traumatic experience.

"I couldn't sleep last night, I had nightmares," he said. "But today I'm much better."

Most probably his conduction system was on low key...ive read clinical cases like this when the individual was kept alive through the automaticity and activity of the purkinje fibers when the sinoatrial and atrioventricular node/atrioventricular junctional conduction systems failed to fire.

Speaking of bilirubin, there are two types : 1) uncojugated and 2) conjugated

SINGAPORE News

SINGAPORE: An unemployed man was jailed five months on Monday for filming his 15-year-old daughter while she was showering.

The man, who attributed it to a "lapse of judgment", was severely berated by a judge for "causing unthinkable harm" to the girl.

The father, who cannot be named due to a gag order, was found guilty of outraging his daughter's modesty.

He was also granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal on a second charge under the Films Act.

The tall and bespectacled man, who turned up in court with his wife, remained emotionless during sentencing.

Investigations revealed that between January 2009 and March 2010, the girl was showering at home when she discovered she was being filmed.

Her father had placed a phone - on the video recording mode - in the pocket of a pair of jeans, which was hung in the toilet of his home.

His daughter discovered the phone while she was showering, and deleted the video after seeing the recording.

She later approached her school counsellor and a report was made in April 2010.

In mitigation, the man's lawyer, Mr Anand Nalachandran said that the man, who is a first time offender, "has gone through a very difficult period in the last two to three years."

He added that his client had pleaded guilty instead of contesting the charges in a trial.

Noting this, District Judge Lee Poh Choo said it was the only factor that held some mitigating weight.

However, she emphasised that the offense was "too serious, and leniency was not for parents who preyed on their young children at home".

She rebuked the man for "surreptitiously causing immense mental anguish and stress to the teenager".

She added that it was worse when the man had shifted the blame onto his daughter by calling her a "problem child".

Calling it an "absurd, ludicrous explanation", the judge pointed out that it reflected a lack of remorse.

Channel NewsAsia understood that the girl has been away from her family for a few years and is currently living at a Home.

The girl, who has two other siblings, is expected to live with her relatives eventually.

No we do not recognize Mormon baptism as valid because their understanding of the Trinity is vastly different than ours. For more on Mormonism your might want to read: "Inside Mormanism" by Isaiah Bennet, available on catholic.com or by phone: 888 291 8000.

A soul, according to the original Catholic Encyclopedia is "the ultimate internal principle by which we think, feel, and will, and by which our bodies are animated." In this case, the Catholic Encyclopedia is referring to human souls. A soul may be, for lack of a better term, "made up" of spirit or of matter. Human and angelic souls are spiritual souls; human souls differing in that they are embodied in matter while angelic souls are pure spirit. For human and angelic souls, the term spirit can either be a synonym for the term soul or it can refer to the soul's composition. Animal and plant souls are material, which means that they cease to exist when the animal or plant dies. Since they are material souls, one would not use the term spirit in reference to animal or plant souls.

The two great commandments are that we love God and that we love our neighbor as we do ourselves (Matt. 22:35-40). If being in heaven meant that we could not love others, particularly those who were close to us in this life, then that would mean that we couldn't fulfill the second great commandment.

Christians believe in the communion of saints, which is the union of all who live in Christ. Because of the communion of saints, we may be assured that we will know and love our family in heaven, even if the relationship with them is not exactly the same as it was on earth.

Bible Study / Re: What's so special about Mary?
November 12, 2012, 12:05:02 AM
Hi,

Why do we Catholics hold Mary in such high esteem? (I never tire of answering this one.) For starters, because God does! It was God the Father who sent the angel Gabriel to salute her: “Hail, full of grace!” Up to that point when an angel appeared to a human being, it was the human being that showed reverence to the angel; not the angel to the human being. But God determined that Mary would co-operate with Him in making the Savior present to the world. Her very womb became a tabernacle. She alone had the sublime honor of nursing God at her breast! Because of the sublime relationship she would have with the Son of God, God created her to be spotless and free from original sin. You see, Mary is special because of how much more special Jesus is. When people look down on Mary, without realizing it, they are suggesting that Jesus doesn’t deserve so special a mother. But Catholics have always recognized that He does.

Hi,

This is what the Catechism of the Catholic Church has to say on using mediums: "All forms of divination are to be rejected: recourse to Satan or demons, conjuring up the dead or other practices falsely supposed to 'unveil' the future. Consulting horoscopes, astrology, palm reading, interpretation of omens and lots, the phenomena of clairvoyance, and recourse to mediums all conceal a desire for power over time, history, and, in the last analysis, other human beings, as well as a wish to conciliate hidden powers. They contradict the honor, respect and loving fear the we owe to God alone."

Dear friend,

Absolutely not! Saging is new age nonsense. Lord know what spirits such actions satisfy. They are certainly not of Him. To have your house blessed by a priest is putting it in the hands of God.

The point is: when one sins mortally, to try to make an act of perfect contrition. In other words, consider God's goodness and repent for love of Him. If one's contrition is unselfish, one's prayers will have merit. Of course, we can't know if our contrition is perfect. When we receive absolution, our sins are forgiven, even if our contrition is not perfect. Note that mortal sin does not prevent God from giving the person actual grace or no one would ever be able to repent. While we cannot receive sanctifying grace while in mortal sin, we can receive actual grace.

Here is an important distinction to keep in mind that will be helpful to you in your dilemma:

Catholics believe that the man and woman give themselves to each other in marriage. The reason why the question "Who gives this woman to this man?" never appears in a Catholic marriage liturgy is because the freedom of both parties to marry each other is so important that any suggestion that there is a lack of freedom by the bride to enter into the marriage -- that she has, instead, been "given" into marriage by her father alone or her parents together -- could call into question the validity of the marriage. I strongly urge you and the bride's mother to stoutly refuse to participate in "giving away the bride" on the basis of religious principle.

Now you may be wondering about the fact that a father does often escort his daughter down the aisle in a Catholic marriage liturgy. The reason this could cause you to wonder is because very often people conflate the act of escorting a woman down the aisle with the act of "giving away the bride." These are, in fact, two separate and distinct rituals. Ordinarily, Catholic parents are free to escort their daughter down the aisle to meet her intended groom without involving themselves in a non-Catholic ritual of "giving away the bride" that seriously conflicts with the Catholic understanding of marriage.

In your case though, you must determine if your daughter's marriage will be presumptively valid. If she is a Catholic bound by Catholic marital law, then she needs to be working with a Catholic priest or deacon to ensure that her marriage in a non-Catholic ritual will conform to Catholic canon law. If she does not, then her marriage will be presumptively invalid. If the marriage is presumptively invalid, then I cannot recommend that you engage in any marriage rituals that will give the appearance that you approve of her choice to flout her Catholic faith.

Can I give away my daughter in a non-Catholic marriage?

Reposted from: http://forums.catholic.com/showthread.php?t=727837

I have a question, I am Catholic and so is my wife, she was married before in a non-Catholic marriage, when we got married we got married at an embassy in South Korea, that was over 30 years ago, I've now been told I can't receive communion or be resolved of my sins when I go to confession. Is all this true, there may not be any way to get the documentation for my wife since it was years ago in Korea, what do we have to do to get married by Church now, thank you for your time and assistance.

Deaf friend,

Since your wife was a Catholic when she married a man outside of the Catholic Church, the marriage would not have been valid. Now the Church requires proof that such is the case. If the embassy has no record of the marriage, surely there must be someone who was present at the ceremony who can vouch for the fact that it took place--such as an official witness (best man or maid of honor).

You need to see your pastor about this so that you can be married in the Catholic Church. You are in my prayers. Feel free to contact me privately by clicking on my name above.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS OATH

“I”_________, now in the presence of Almighty God, the blessed Virgin Mary, the holy apostles, St. Paul and St. Peter, and all the Saints, sacred host of heaven, and to you, my Ghostly Father, the superior general of the society of Jesus, founded by St. Ignatius Loyola in the pontification of Paul the III, and continued to the present, do by the womb of the Virgin, the matrix of God, and the rod of Jesus Christ, declare and swear, that his Holiness the Pope, is Christ's vice-regent, and the true and only head of the Catholic or Universal Church, throughout the earth; and that by virtue of the keys of binding and loosing given his holiness by my Savior, Jesus Christ, he hath power to depose heretical kings, princes, States, and governments that they may be safely destroyed. Therefore, to the utmost of my power I will defend this doctrine and his Holiness' right and custom against all usurpers of the heretical or Protestant authority whatever, especially, the Lutheran Church of Germany, Holland, Denmark, Sweden and Norway and the new pretended authority and churches of England and Scotland, and the branches of same now established in Ireland, and on the continent of America and elsewhere, and all adherents in regard that they may be usurped and heretical, opposing the sacred Mother Church of Rome.

"I do now denounce and disown allegiance as due to any heretical king, prince or State, named Protestant or Liberals, or obedience to any of their laws, magistrates or officers.

"I do further declare, that I will help, assist and advise all or any of his Holiness’ agents, in any place where I should be, in Switzerland, Germany, Holland, Ireland or America, or in any other kingdom or territory I shall come to, and do my utmost to extirpate the heretical Protestant or Masonic Doctrine, and to destroy all their pretended powers, legal or otherwise.

"I do further promise and declare that, notwithstanding I am dispensed with to assume any religion heretical for the propagation of the Mother Church’s interest; to keep secret and private all her agent's counsels from time to time, as they entrust me, and not divulge, directly or indirectly, by word, writing or circumstances whatever, but to execute all that should be proposed, given in charge, or discovered unto me, by any Ghostly Father or any of this sacred order.

"I do further promise and declare that I will have no opinion or will of my own or any mental reservations, whatsoever even as a corpse or cadaver (Perinde ac cadaver,) but will unhesitatingly obey each and every command that I may receive from my superiors in the militia of the Pope and of Jesus Christ.

'That I will go to any part of the world whithersoever I may be sent, to the frozen regions of the North to the burning sands of the desert of Africa, or to the jungles of India, to the centers of civilization of Europe, or to the wild haunts of the barbarous savages of Africa, without murmuring or repining, and will be submissive in all things whatsoever that are communicated to me.

"I do further promise and declare that I will, when opportunity presents, make and wage relentless war, secretly and openly, against all heretics, Protestants and Masons, as I am directed to do, to extirpate them from the face of the whole earth, and that I will spare neither age, sex or condition, and that I will burn, hang, waste, boil, flay, strangle and bury alive those infamous heretics; rip up the stomachs and wombs of the women, and crush their infants’ heads against the walls, in order to annihilate their execrable race.  That when the same cannot be done openly, I will secretly use the poisonous cup, the strangulation cord, the steel of the poniard, or the leaden bullet, regardless of the homer, rank, dignity or authority of the persons, whatever be their condition in life, either public or private, as I at any time may be directed so to do by any agent of the Pope, or Superior of the Brotherhood of the Holy Father of the Society of Jesus.

"In confirmation of which I hereby dedicate my life, soul and all corporal powers and with the dagger which I now receive I will subscribe my name written in my blood in testimony, thereof; and should I prove false or weaken in my determination, may my brethren and fellow soldiers of the militia of the Pope, cut off my hands and my feet and my throat from ear to ear, my belly open and sulphur burn therein with the punishment that can be inflicted upon me on earth and my soul shall be tortured by demons in eternal hell forever.

"That I will in voting, always vote for a Knight of Columbus in preference to a Protestant, especially a Mason, and that I will leave my party so to do; that if two Catholics are on the ticket I well satisfy myself which is the better supporter of the Mother Church and vote accordingly.

“That I will not deal with or employ a Protestant if in my power to deal with or employ a Catholic.  That I will place Catholic girls in Protestant families, that a weekly report may be made of the inner movements of the heretics.

"That I will provide myself with arms and ammunition that I may be in readiness when the word is passed, or I am commanded to defend the church either as an individual or with the militia of the Pope.

“All of which I' _____________ ,  do swear by the blessed Trinity and the blessed Sacrament which I am to receive to perform and on my part to keep my oath.”

“In testimony whereof, I take this most holy and blessed Sacrament of the Eucharist, and witness the same further, with my name written with the point of this dagger, dipped in my own blood, and seal, in the face of this Holy Sacrament.”

Why is it that just when you think things are going smoothly in your life that you sudenly get nasty supprises or worse?

My dear Anna, challenges come to us for our own benefit. Be the force for good that you were made to be. I will endorse to you the prayer of St. Francis of Assisi:

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury,pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Answer:

The Catholic Church has the fullness of Christian truth and that truth is meant to be shared with all. Look at it this way: Suppose you were feasting at a banquet and knew that your relatives were scrounging for crumbs under the table. Should you invite them to the feast, even though they might spurn your offer, or should you let them continue to scrounge, figuring that they'll scrape up enough off the floor to keep from starving (cf. James 2:15-17)?

Something similar might be said of truth. You can have a seat at the table and eat your fill, or you can make do with what you can find on the floor dropped in the dirt and covered in bugs. Catholics have a seat at the table of truth and have the obligation to share that with those who do not yet have a seat alongside them. Non-Catholics do have some truth (like food), but it is not complete (like a banquet) and may be mixed with error (like the dirt and bugs).

In short, yes, you should defend Catholicism as the opportunity becomes available. But, more than that, you should do your best to make Catholicism "appetizing" to your relatives by being the best Christian God's grace enables you to be and by showing them not just the plausibility of Catholicism but also its beauty. And if, in the end, your relatives are sincerely unable in conscience to accept the truth of Catholicism, God will judge them on how well they lived according to the truth that they did have.

Answer: Your friend may be able to receive the sacrament of reconciliation. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states: “When, in the Ordinary's judgment, a grave necessity arises, Catholic ministers may give the sacraments of Eucharist, Penance, and Anointing of the Sick to other Christians not in full communion with the Catholic Church, who ask for them of their own will, provided they give evidence of holding the Catholic faith regarding these sacraments and possess the required dispositions.” (CCC 1401)
