101 Uses for a Dead Cat, by Simon Bond, was a bestselling collection of macabre cartoons. The book was promoted with the tag line, "Since time immemorial mankind has been plagued by the question, 'What do you do with a dead cat?'" It consisted of cartoons depicting the bodies of dead cats being used for various purposes, including anchoring boats, sharpening pencils and holding bottles of wine. --Wiki

P11M Ukay-ukay
Ni Decemay P. Padilla/EIM (Banat) | Updated March 20, 2015 - 12:00am

STAR/Ferdinand Edralin

Passenger jet forced to make emergency landing in Bangkok after unruly traveller scalds flight attendant with cup of hot water and instant noodles
By CHRIS KITCHING FOR MAILONLINE
PUBLISHED: 11:21 GMT, 12 December 2014 | UPDATED: 14:13 GMT, 12 December 2014

A Thai AirAsia flight to eastern China was forced to return to Bangkok after an unruly passenger threw a cup of hot water and noodles at a flight attendant.

The budget airline said a Chinese passenger berated the woman before scalding her with water on a charter flight to Nanjing on Thursday night.

Colleagues administered first aid while the plane returned to Bangkok, where the female passenger and her entourage of three people were kicked off the flight.

Chinese media reported that instant noodles were thrown at the flight attendant along with the hot water.

A video obtained by China National Radio shows a man standing up in the cabin and making a threat to bomb the plane.

The airline’s statement said the captain and the crew invited the female passenger to discuss the situation at the airport and they reached ‘an amicable conclusion.’

Thai AirAsia did not say if the four passengers were allowed back on the plane when it departed again, almost five hours after its original departure.

Incidents involving Chinese tourists making angry outbursts have prompted Beijing to issue stern guidelines on behaving abroad.

In February, according to Thai and Chinese news reports, 27 members of a Chinese tour group were ejected from a China Eastern Airlines flight before take-off from the Thai resort island of Phuket after brawling over seating arrangements. -- http://www.dailymail.co.uk/

Whether Chinese are less mannered than other tourists is a matter of debate. Over the years, German, Australian and American tourists have sometimes wracked up loathsome reputations, especially when traveling in large tour groups, as many Chinese do.

Part of the backlash has come from the vast numbers of Chinese now traveling. In 2014, more than 100 million Chinese traveled abroad, according to the China National Tourism Administration. A favored destination is Thailand, where more than 4.6 million Chinese visited in 2014, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand.

Within China, there’s a recognition that travel etiquette is lacking. In 2013, the China National Tourism Administration published a 64-page Guidebook for Civilized Tourism, offering advice on everything from queues to bathrooms.

While visiting the Maldives last year, Chinese President Xi Jinping offered this advice to his countrymen: “Do not leave water bottles everywhere. Do not damage coral reefs. Eat less instant noodles and more local seafood.”

Earlier this month, a Chinese woman named Tiara Lin published an essay in China’s Global Times newspaper on what she called “insufferable” Chinese travel habits. Lin suggested that some Chinese, such as her mother, are less than sensitive because of their early experiences in life.

“She grew up in a big family with seven siblings, and worked in a state-owned restaurant serving hundreds of comrades at a time during busy services,” she wrote. “The only way she could make herself heard was by shouting over the din, so her ‘normal tone of voice’ would be considered a few decibels too loud overseas.”

Lin said she appreciates the government’s efforts to encourage better manners but doubted the effectiveness of the recent 64-page guidebook. Such an approach “is sure to miss its target audience, if my mother is anything to go by,” she wrote. “A guidebook would only put her to sleep.” -- http://www.mcclatchydc.com/

Travel etiquette has been a hot topic in China for several years, especially in 2013, when a 15-year-old Chinese tourist was caught etching graffiti on part of a 3,500-year-old temple in Egypt. Repeated incidents continue to attract attention, prompting bouts of national soul-searching:

â€" In February, a Chinese tourist in Thailand was caught airing out her underwear on chairs in the Chiang Mai airport. That followed in incident in Chang Rai, where a temple temporarily banned Chinese tourists after they left restrooms in an unwelcoming condition.

â€" In December, a Thai AirAsia flight was forced to return to Bangkok after a Chinese passenger threw hot water at a flight attendant.

â€" Since December, Chinese airline passengers have been involved in three incidents where they were accused of opening emergency exit doors, causing flights to be delayed. The latest occurred Saturday, when a passenger in China’s far-western Xinjiang region opened an emergency door, reportedly because he thought it was a handrail.

In Phichitamphon’s case, she encountered a crowd of what she said were Chinese tourists at a tax refund booth at Jeju Airport in South Korea. She said some in the crowd pushed her, pulled her hair and stepped on her feet. As of Tuesday, the Thai version of her video had been viewed more than 800,000 times.

Another viral moment that makes Chinese tourists look bad
BY STUART LEAVENWORTH
McClatchy Foreign Staff
March 17, 2015

BEIJING â€" Thai model Duangjai Phichitamphon was waiting in line at a South Korean airport when, based on her account, a swarm of Chinese tourists overwhelmed the orderly queue she was standing in.

Instead of taking a deep breath, Phichitamphon decided to produce a video rant. Her March 12 video on Chinese tourist behavior has since gone viral â€" the latest black eye for the country’s travelers, who, rightly or wrongly, are gaining a bad rap overseas.

“Everywhere they (the Chinese) go in the world makes people disgusted by their manners,” the model gripes in the video. “Didn’t their parents teach them any manners?”

Tourists, many of them Chinese, visit one of Bangkok’s most famous temples, Wat Phra Kaeo, in January. While many Chinese blend in with the rest of Thailand’s tourists, some have recently made a bad name for their home country. STUART LEAVENWORTH â€" McClatchy

Happiness is neither a frivolity nor a luxury. It is a deep-seated yearning shared by all members of the human family.  It should be denied to no one and available to all. This aspiration is implicit in the pledge of the United Nations Charter to promote peace, justice, human rights, social progress and improved standards of life. Now is the time to convert this promise into concrete international and national action to eradicate poverty, promote social inclusion and inter-cultural harmony, ensure decent livelihoods, protect the environment and build institutions for good governance. These are the foundations for human happiness and well-being.

http://vtdigger.org/
PRESS RELEASE MAR. 16 2015, 10:20 AM 3 COMMENTS

In 2012, the General Assembly of the United Nations unanimously proclaimed March 20th International Day of Happiness, (IDoH) giving global recognition to the relevance of happiness and well-being as universal goals and aspirations in the lives of human beings around the world and the importance of their recognition in public policy objectives.

Everyone around the world is invited to participate in IDoH, and each year the celebration grows larger and more creative. The Worldwide Happiness Dinner (WHD) is an example. People are invited to host a meal and conversation on or around March 20th. The conversation is about happiness and what matters in life. Guidelines for the discussion will be provided and conversation highlights and photos will be collected and shared by The Happiness Walk. More information are available at their web site: www.happinesswalk.com The Happiness Walk is a project of Gross National Happiness USA.

The Worldwide Happiness Dinner is an opportunity to reflect on what truly matters in lives: our relationships, our connections, good food and health. International Day of Happiness is a celebration of what’s right in the world and how we, as citizens of that world, can make it a happier, healthier place.

A village in Japan has four times as many scarecrows as people. And it's all thanks to one woman â€" and more than a decade of work.

Tsukimi Ayano said she made her first scarecrow 13 years ago in the likeness of her father as a tribute to him after his death. Since then, she's made more than 350 life-sized dolls but, like their human counterparts, they don't last forever, so about 150 of them remain in Nagoro, a village in southern Japan.

Still, with a population of 35, the scarecrows outnumber the people in Nagoro by a good amount, acting as replacements for those who have died or moved away.

"When I was 20 there were around 150 people here. Now there are around 30 or so, it's maybe a fifth," said a Nagoro resident. The trend mirrors that of Japan as a whole, which had a population of 128.06 million in 2010, but is expected to drop below 100 million by 2054, at the latest, according to the country's National Institute of Population and Social Security Research. Japan's population in 2010 was 128.06 million, according to the institute, which partially blames plunging birth rates for the decline. The number of children under the age of 15 in Japan has already tumbled from 27 million in the early 1980s to 16.84 million in 2010, according to Japan's census.

In Nagoro's school, which closed down in 2012 after its last two students graduated, scarecrows sit in desks, their button eyes fixated on a scarecrow teacher positioned at the chalkboard.

"It's indeed something to bring back memories," Osamu Suzuki, a 68-year-old resident, told Reuters.

Ayano, who is one of the village's youngest residents at the age of 65, said she plans to keep making the scarecrows as long as she is healthy.

"I enjoy it," she said adding that her goal is to make them more life-like, so when people look at them they have to look twice and say: 'Oh, that wasn't a person!'"  -- "http://www.nbcnews.com/

JAKARTA, March 16 (Reuters) - Southeast Asia's major economies drew more foreign direct investment combined than China for the second straight year in 2014, as growth in their giant neighbour cooled. But by country, inflows into the region were uneven, swayed by political change and the varying costs of doing business.

Overall FDI into Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam rose to a record $128 billion in 2014, estimates compiled by Thomson Reuters show. That surpassed the $119.56 billion that flowed into China. FDI into the Philippines grew the fastest, at 66 percent, while in Thailand, where the military seized power last year, inflows fell. FDI into Indonesia, the region's biggest economy, rose around 10 percent even though it was an election year.

As China's troubled manufacturing sector loses momentum, Chinese businesses will be venturing abroad to cut operating costs and to search for new markets, economists say. Manufacturing powerhouses in Southeast Asia should pay heed.

"Rising wages in China are leading low-end manufacturers to look for other low-cost locations for their factories, with countries like Vietnam and the Philippines looking like attractive alternatives," said Dan Martin, Asia Economist at Capital Economics. "ASEAN is also a large market in its own right, and one with good long-term growth prospects. Given the general slowdown in other emerging market regions in recent years, it is starting to stand out."

The Philippines, the second-fastest growing major economy in Asia, attracts investors with its strong economic fundamentals. But one concern is the continuity of economic policies following the 2016 general elections. That means some investment decisions might be postponed. Slumping commodity prices could pinch on FDI inflows into resource-rich Indonesia and, to a lesser extent, Malaysia. Indonesian President Joko Widodo, who took office in October, is seeking more foreign investment in manufacturing to counter the volatile resources sector. But Indonesia has many improvements to make, particularly in its business infrastructure, to successfully challenge the region's manufacturing leader - Thailand. (Editing by Ryan Woo)

On the reverse of this photograph was written: “Zum ewigen Andenken an den Spartakisten Krieg in München Bayern.” â€" As an eternal memento of the Spartacist War in Munich, Bavaria.

Some say it’s a real situation some say it’s a staged photo. It’s most likely was a staged event due to the various discrepancies in the photo. This does not look like an actual execution. They are too close to the wall to shoot without ricocheting and they’re not aiming or shouldering their guns in such a way that would indicate a readiness to fire. The guy on the far right is looking in a strange direction. And the officer is looking directly into the camera. Two of the guys in the back rank appear to be unfamiliar with their Mauser 98’s. If he fires it, the guy on the right is going to hurt himself.

It looks like a PR photo in favor of the communist propaganda. Just look at the guy who’s supposed to be executed, he got: defiant attitude, stylish clothing great hair and he’s looking way too nonchalant. German photojournalists of the early 20th century would frequently stage their photographs. In their eyes it wasn’t that they were faking, it was just that they wanted to tell a true story in the most visually compelling way. -- http://rarehistoricalphotos.com/

Hmm, Figueroa was most likely referring to the film remake. Perhaps he had in mind the Helena Bonham Carter character?

at least, fish have scales. ;D

Of course not all, ma chérie. As for mackerel, generally they do have scales, but not in the case of the so-called snake mackerel--whose scalelessness makes it haram.
