Inspiration & Hope / Be success
March 23, 2008, 08:00:14 PM
Only when you're able to accept the possibility of getting it wrong will you have the persistence to get it right. Meaningful success rarely comes from a single transaction.
Success is a consistent pattern more than it is an isolated event. It is the way you live rather than some object or experience you acquire.

In fact, the way to truly have success is to be success. Success is yours when you persistently embody the discipline, the integrity, the positive attitude, the respect and all the other attributes of which it is made.

Visualize yourself today as a living, breathing, active and dynamic manifestation of success. In what way does such a vision compel you to think, to speak, to act and to live?

If you consider success to be something outside of you, that's where it will always remain -- outside of you and apart from you. Instead, choose to not merely be successful, but to be success itself.

In your thoughts, your words, your actions and your expectations, be the living embodiment of success. And whatever you envision will surely be within your reach.

Inspiration & Hope / Your moment to fulfill
March 23, 2008, 07:59:01 PM

This day is too valuable to waste. The people in your life are too beautiful to ignore.
Take a moment to remember how fortunate you are to be you. Take a look around, with your eyes lovingly and enthusiastically open to the possibilities.

Most of what you fear does not even exist. Much of what you love is closer than you realize.

You are just one small step away from being on the path toward your most treasured dream. You are just one brief thought away from understanding the richness that is your life.

You have traveled a long way to be where you are. With every step you have gained something of real and lasting value.

Now is a day to move forward with more experience, knowledge and wisdom than ever before. Now is your moment to realize and fulfill the miracle that is your life.

At 18 -- You  tell her a story and take her to bed.

At 28 -- You  don't need to tell her a story to take her to bed.

According to new research from the University of Leeds, prostitutes, perversions and public scandals â€" the stuff of the 21st century tabloids was familiar to readers three centuries earlier.
Jenny Skipp’s three-year PhD study "sex in the 1700s" examined, catalogued and categorised every known erotic text published in eighteenth-century Britain: "I tried to get a grip on just how many were published, detail the various types of sexual behaviour portrayed and find out who was doing what â€" and to whom." It proved a surprisingly rich field: "Most people have heard of Fanny Hill, but there was a huge amount of erotic literature published in the 18th century."

And despite earlier work suggesting that these texts were only for solitary consumption â€" at home, alone, and behind closed doors â€" Skipp’s work throws up a surprising image of how these works were used. "They would be read in public â€" everywhere from London's rough-and-ready alehouses to the city’s thriving coffee houses, which weren't quite the focus of polite society in the way we sometimes think," she explained. "Some texts even came as questions
and answers and were clearly intended for groups of men to read together, with one asking the questions and the others answering them."

Much of the work is derogatory in its references to women. They are subordinates, courtesans, prostitutes, carriers of venereal disease and bearers of deformed children. "When men write this way, or read these texts, it gives them a context for asserting their authority over women," Skipp added. Yet some texts portray women altogether differently, discussing the nature of female sexuality or describing lascivious aristocratic females.

One group predominant in this literature is the Libertines â€" whose all-in hedonistic, smoking, drinking, swearing, pleasure-seeking lifestyle was typified by their subjugation of women. Literature aimed at this group, encouraging men to assert their dominance, translated the repressive attitudes of Libertinism further down the class structure.

And Skipp's analysis of the pricing of these works revises earlier studies to show that rather than being solely targeted at the gentry, much of this work was cheap and widely available. Though many from the poorer sections of society are considered illiterate because they were unable to sign their name, they may still have been able to read: "Many more people could read than write," she said. "In London, for example, we believe about 70 per cent of men could read."

The works range from books, down to single-sheet pamphlets. "The price and content of this material suggests it was available to merchants, traders, skilled and semi-skilled men and even labourers," Skipp went on. Its accessibility allowed sexual attitudes to percolate down the social strata.

Dr Simon Burrows of the University’s school of history, one of Skipp’s PhD supervisors, described the study as "pioneering work." He said: "Jenny has shown that erotic texts are about much more than sexual fantasy. They can give us genuine new insights into cultural attitudes, sexual norms and social customs."

And Skipp describes a literary quality to the writing which you might struggle to find in modern erotic fiction or top-shelf pornography. "It is very different to today's erotica," she said. "It is more humorous, more literary and more engaged with the wider issues of the life and politics of the times." Its metaphors mirror the passions of the age: "At a time when military power was equated with virility, armed conquest is often used as a metaphor for sex â€" in phrases such as 'unsheathing the weapon', 'storming the fort' and 'releasing the cannon'."

By the 1770s, the transcripts of adultery trials became a new source of titillation. To secure a divorce, a man would first have to successfully sue a rival for 'violating his property', before petitioning Parliament to dissolve the marriage. "There is something rather voyeuristic about these trials," said Skipp. "Often servants would give evidence while innkeepers would testify about lovers taking rooms together."

"The appetite for this kind of material shows readers were interested in gossip about their social betters and fascinated by the sordid details of marital breakdown â€" just like modern-day readers scanning the tabloids for a juicy scandal.

"The production of erotica was frequently stimulated by intrigues in the lives of well-known public figures â€" the aristocracy, politicians, writers, playwrights and actresses and occasionally the monarchy. The wives and mistresses were both celebrated and derided in erotic texts â€" they were the WAGS of their day."

As Skipp said: "Eighteenth century readers were just as fascinated with public figures as we are today â€" especially when they had skeletons in their closet!"

Health and Food / Secret Key To A Longer Life
March 16, 2008, 05:56:01 AM
What is the secret to a longer life? The answer: meat and two neutrons.

Indulging in an isotope-enhanced steak or chicken fillet every now and again could add as much as 10 years to your life. Scientists have shown for the first time that food enriched with natural isotopes builds bodily components that are more resistant to the processes of aging.

The concept has been demonstrated in worms and researchers hope that the same concept can help extend human life and reduce the risk of cancer and other diseases of aging, reports the magazine Chemistry and Industry.

Participating in moderate to vigorous physical activity and limiting time in front of the television are some of the keys to successful weight loss in teens, according to researchers at the University of Minnesota Medical School.

Research published in a recent issue of Obesity identified common factors among teens, ages 16 to 18, who successfully lost weight:

-- Overweight teens who lost weight participated in significantly more moderate to vigorous physical activity than those who maintained the same weight or gained. Females who lost weight averaged 7.6 hours a week, and males 11.7 a week.

-- Female adolescents who lost weight were more likely to participate in weight training and strengthening exercises.

-- Teens who lost weight spent significantly less time in front of the television compared to those who gained weight.

According to the study, successful weight loss for overweight teens averaged 14 percent reduction of their body weight for females and 12 percent reduction for males within a year. The average weight loss met the 10 percent goal recommended for adults to experience the medical benefits of weight loss.

A study, published Wednesday in the United States, has revealed that women who eat beef regularly during pregnancy are more likely to produce sperm-deprived sons.

The study was done using men living in the Unites States who were born between 1949 and 1983. The study proved that the mothers who ate more than seven beef meals a week produced children with a sperm concentration of more than 24 percent lower than in men whose mothers ate less beef.

Professor Shanna Swan, head of the study published in the journal Human Reproduction, said: "These findings suggest that maternal beef consumption is associated with lower sperm concentration and possible sub-fertility, associations that may be related to the presence of anabolic steroids and other xenobiotics (foreign chemicals) in beef."

Sharing the secrets to a stress free work life.

1. Take 5 minute breaks regularly throughout your day. Sit or walk on your own and relax, breathe deeply and feel peaceful. You will feel more relaxed and not so overwhelmed, increasing your level of concentration and ability to achieve more, in less time.

2. Arrive 10 minutes early for every work and personal appointment. You will have time to feel relaxed, prepare yourself and to show respect for the other person’s time.

3. Take responsibility for your actions. Actions that you take are a result of choices that you’ve made. When you take responsibility for your actions you realise that you are able to make different choices.

4. Clean up your work space. Such as, find a way to eliminate the piles of paperwork. Working in an environment that is clean and organised will free up your mind and reduce distractions for you. When our space feels cluttered it leads to our mind feeling cluttered.

5. Manage yourself rather than your time. You cannot change time yet you can make changes to yourself by organising yourself, setting priorities, taking responsibility…. When you manage yourself you will have more time to create the life you really want.

6. Learn to say no. A straight forward "No" is best although if this feels difficult at first try, "No, my time is committed elsewhere." Saying no is a skill to learn, takes practice and you can do it pleasantly. You will never please everyone and accepting this will reduce the pressure you put on yourself.

7. Reward your achievements. Choose the reward before you start both for small and large achievements and use it to move you forward, particularly when overcoming an obstacle. Rewarding yourself will encourage you to keep persevering and focusing on winning.

Important: Get enough sleep and you will never be tired the whole day.

Philippine Daily News / Civil War no, Edsa Tres yo!
March 13, 2008, 12:10:10 PM

*events not just in manila but in the entire philippines and among
pinoys overseas augur turning worse to worst before getting any
better. in fact it is headed towards a civil war.

actually, i had warned readers of an earlier civil war but nobody
wanted to believe in 2004 that gloria stole the farmers fertilizer
fund in order to steal the 2004 presidential elections. she almost
conked out in 2005 and how easy it is for the filipino to forget that
we are playing with fire whenever we suppress the truth.

(by the way, contrary to the ibon report that that scam was P728
million, truth to tell it was P3 billion. in fact before the P728 came
out, the first fertilizer scam was already exposed involving P432
spirited out of the National Food Authority bearing Administrator
Arthur Yap's signature; the case was filed by Marlene Esperat et al on
July 2004. Yes this is the same Yap who delivered the goodies but has
been promoted to agriculture secretary despite the prima facie
evidence against him in that case. Yap is never an agriculturist, he
is lawyer and a damn good Labrador for the First Gentleman and his
former instructor at the Ateneo pre law - Professor Gloria Macapagal
Arroyo. Yap is married to the erstwhile Uniwide Superstores that
preceded Pure Gold in the smuggling of Chinese chicken into the
country. That Esperat case is still live in the Ombudsman. But since
Simeon Marcelo resigned and Merceditas Gutierrez, another FG protege,
took over, no progress has been reported. For the meantime, Esperat
has been the victim of extra-judicial killing, with agriculture
finance officials, who used to report to JocJoc Bolante who directly
reported to the presidential bedroom, now being tagged as masterminds.
The Cebu court has already issued the corresponding warrants of
arrest.)

of course, to prevent a civil war was also in the mind of ninoy aquino
when he came home from exile, only to be butchered by presidential
wannabes who conspired with the generals. that civil war was snuffed
by Edsa One.

the first thought of civil war came to me when fidel ramos was
clueless about the massive brownouts that met him after he swore to
office in 1992. i remember mon pedrosa and i telling cory and eddie
then that we were all sitting on top of social volcano that was due to
erupt. well it simmered a bit when steady eddie momentarily solved the
problem, but the currency crisis of 1996 and then the erap's
incompetence and corruption took center stage and again there was talk
of civil war resurrected but Edsa Dos snuffed it one more time.

but instead of taking the country to posterity as promised by her
doctorate credentials and private-school education under the nuns and
the jesuits, gloria brought us all to a lower hell with social
indignation that is fast escalating into a civil war. there is no
repentance here, not even admission of guilt. there is only cover-up
and stonewalling.

why? because gloria has already assessed her options and that is hell
or high water, she will remained glued to power, thus the monicker
"ate glue" by some pundits. the only way she will leave malacanang is
horizontally. she has no choice. she has already prostituted herself
and the presidency, earning the notoriety of being the most corrupt
president the republic has ever had. she will not leave before 2010 or
even after because she cannot do an Erap before the Sandiganbayan, she
does not want the embarrassment of being the first graduandus from
Assumption Convent to be accused of plunder. her pride is so high, she
will not listen to any reason or unreason to leave power.

gloria's sin of covetousness or greed can no longer be mitigated. it
is now public knowledge that she has violated the seventh and tenth
comandment of God. ask anyone in the streets. linda olaguer-montayre
says in her book "A Nation Unborn" that she also sinned against the
sixth and ninth comandment. by her lips she admitted having "plenty"
of sex. and it looks like the nuns have bought linda's story because
the madres have become the strongest supporters of rodolfo lozada.

the only way gloria will lose the support of the generals she has paid
is when the military finally understands that the very security of the
nation is already being sacrificed so that she can continue to reign.
i do not think the police is with her. kung tuta si sonny razon edi
patay na si lozada. the good general's comment affirming to abolish
EO464 says it all. i smell Edsa Tres, but there are some minor
hitches.

forget the CBCP, those guys wear skirts. they have been programmed by
Catechism not to meddle in political affairs that the book says is the
province of the laity. for heavens' sakes, you better believe it -
cardinal sin is dead! asking for his redux already borders on deus ex
machina that seems to be not forthcoming this time. the lord God is
sick and tired of warning us. he wants us to correct it ourselves this
time. he wants us to restire ourselves from corruption.

and i am neither worried about the phyrrhic show of solidarity of
Lakas and Kampi purportedly to be a collossus of sorts. my foot, that
is where LDP was when monching mitra lost. that was where Lakas-NUCD
was when Joe de Venecia lost. there are no legitimate political
parties in our system, just butterflies attracted by the nectar in the
form of money and pork. this is why i have time and again asked some
of our legislators to pass a bill penalizing turncoatism, but did they
even take any proposal to any committee? all we see in joker, dick and
johnny is endless lawyering that suits gloria's position to a T.

for her, she cannot make any mistakes. "fertilizer scam, not me - its
bolante. cheating the 2004 elections, not me - it's garci, esperon and
mendoza. ZTE-NBN, not me - its chairman abalos. spratly treason, not
me in fact it was joe de venecia. half the population going hungry,
not me - it's the oil crisis. high electric bills, not me - its the
lopezes. most corrupt, not me - its FG; i am merely a victim of
marital association. extrajudicial killings, not me - its palparan. i
believe in the rule of law, that is why i always tell secretary
gonzales to make sure the law is enforced. i have also told my
national security adviser bert gonzales to stop killing those
dissidents. i believe in telling and upholding the truth, that is why
i always tell secretaries ermita, saludo and golez to follow closely
their talking points and not deviate from the prompter. but P40 to $1,
that's me - its never the OFWs."

the endless cover-up and stonewalling by malacanang and the resounding
halleluyahs of congress is driving our country to civil war.

when what happened to nicaragua happens to the philippines, i hope the
romulos and those illustrious residents of makati and alabang's
exclusive villages will no longer wonder why they have been driven
away from their homes by peasants and workers. so instead of investing
on further perpetuating an arroyo regime, they should be the first
ones to move her out lest the horsemen of the apocalyse pass over
their palacial dwellings.

i do not want to be a balikbayan the day after, that is after the
social volcano erupts. the only thing that can avert a civil war is to
remove arroyo. not later, but sooner. and you can lump noli de castro
with her too. this way the people will have a chance to elect their
successors via the only constitutional recourse available for a snap
election. civil war no, edsa tres yo!

Inspiration & Hope / In love with life
March 11, 2008, 03:18:10 PM

Fall in love again each moment with life. Breathe in the rich, new wondrous possibilities that are continually being born.
Realize what a grand opportunity exists in even the smallest of matters. Today is a day like no other, and you are magnificently blessed to be a part of all that it encompasses.

The wind blows, the sun shines, night falls, and some days bring brutal cold while others offer stifling heat. There is beauty, there is tragedy, and there is exquisite fulfillment along with bitter disappointment.

On the surface, life is filled with much adventure, activity, change, confusion, excitement, joy and frustration. Underlying it all you'll find abiding peace and goodness that can never be denied.

You have the unique, unmatched good fortune of being you, right here and right now. Take a brief moment to realize and remember who you truly are.

Then look out at the vast expanse of possibilities that surrounds you. And dive lovingly into it in your own special way.

Ralph Marston

Inspiration & Hope / Faithful expression
March 11, 2008, 03:16:10 PM

Fulfillment does not come from grabbing and holding something outside of you. Fulfillment is brought about by being the living expression of what you value most.
The possibilities in life have no limit. Those possibilities you fulfill are the possibilities you choose to embrace and embody.

Life is whatever you can sincerely imagine it to be. Those possibilities that you conceive of, understand, and value are the ones you bring to life.

If you continually hold conflicting possibilities in your mind, then that same conflict will shape the events and circumstances of your life. Focus instead on the good, valuable, desirable possibilities that support and complement each other.

The things you seek become yours when you allow your life to express them. Think of what you can do right now, in this moment, to bring to life your most treasured dreams and values.

Every thought, every word, every action matters, and adds to the substance of your life. When all that you do faithfully expresses the person you are, life is filled with richness and meaning.

Health and Food / Health Benefits of Fish Oil
March 11, 2008, 02:52:18 PM
Health Benefits of Fish Oil
by: Shwn Paeltzer
Fish oil is a proven food product for fighting disease and maintaining general good health. Fish oil is obtained from various species of fish such as mackerel, herring, sardines, lake trout, etc. Fish oil is safe for consumption by all age-groups; unlike dietary fish, which may be contaminated by metals such as mercury.

Fish oil is an important source of Omega 3 fatty acids; eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). The Omega 3 found in fish oil is more beneficial than other forms of Omega 3 that are found in walnuts, flaxseeds, etc.

Omega 3 fatty acids found in fish oil have numerous clinically proven health benefits. Fish oil has long been considered as brain food and its regular consumption enhances memory and develops concentration. Studies carried out in different countries such as the U.K and Australia have shown the positive effects of fish oil on the learning skills of toddlers. Children affected by ADD/ADHD and dyslexia benefit from fish oil, their learning, grasping, and reading skills improve appreciably. In fact, if expecting mothers partake of fish oil, the children born have an edge over their compatriots in kindergarten. DHA in fish oil boosts visual acuity in children.
Fish oil is also considered to be beneficial in treating and preventing various forms of cancer. Studies with volunteer groups show that those who consumed fish oil were less susceptible to sunburn and the harmful effects of UV rays. This could have implications in the prevention of skin cancer. Research also shows that the combination of propofil, which is an anesthetic, with fish oil can lead to the destruction of cancer cells. This opens up the possibility of developing either an ointment or a patch for treating tumors. Fish oil has also been found to be useful in the treatment of the Human Papilloma Virus, which is a common STD that leads to cervical cancer in women.

Fish oil has always been considered good for the eyes; recent studies have shown that the Omega 3 fatty acids found in fish oil offer protection against age-related macular degeneration, which is one of the foremost causes of age-related blindness, and dry-eye syndrome in which the lachrymal glands do not function properly and the cornea can get scarred.
A recent study conducted in Denmark has found that fish oil consumption by diabetics lowered the content of triacylglycerol, (TAG) in the blood. TAG is a fatty substance linked to heart disease. Obese individuals who suffer from hypertension, insulin resistance, and high blood triglycerides can lose weight more effectively if they follow a regimen of exercise combined with regular intake of fish oil. Originally homeported in Charleston, S.C., as part of Destroyer Squadron 6, NICHOLSON was later transferred to Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, Va., as part of Destroyer Squadron 18, and finally to Naval Station Norfolk.

Sailing on 11 deployments and wetting her keel in every ocean of the world, NICHOLSON has been awarded the Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy Battle Efficiency Ribbon (five awards), National Defense Service Medal (two awards), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (four awards), Southwest Asia Service Medal (two awards), Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (eleven awards), Navy Arctic Service Ribbon and the Coast Guard Special Operations Service Ribbon (two awards).

According to data of the Happy Planet Index compiled by the British think-tank New Economics Foundation, The Philippines is 17th among 178 countries ranked as the happiest on Earth.

The tiny South Pacific Ocean archipelago of Vanuatu is the happiest, with Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominica, and Panama complete the top five according to the study which measures people's well being and their impact on the environment.

The index combines life satisfaction, life expectancy and environmental footprint -- the amount of land required to sustain the population and absorb its energy consumption.

Zimbabwe is at the bottom, below second-worst performer Swaziland, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Ukraine.

Among the first world nations, Italy came out best in 66th place, ahead of Germany (81), Japan (95), Britain (108), Canada (111), France (129), the United States (150) and Russia, in lowly 172nd place.

Andrew Simms, NEF's policy director, said the index "addresses the relative success or failure of countries in giving their citizens a good life while respecting the environmental resource limits on which all our lives depend."

Nic Marks, the head of NEF's center for wellbeing, added: "It is clear that no single nation listed in the Happy Planet Index has got everything right.

"But the index does reveal patterns that show how we might better achieve long and happy lives for all, whilst living within our environmental means," he said, according to British daily The Guardian. "The challenge is: can we learn the lessons and apply them?"

Also on the list are 23. Indonesia; 31. China; 32. Thailand; 44. Malaysia; 62. India; 64. Iceland; 70. Netherlands; 87. Spain; 88. Hong Kong; 89. Saudi Arabia; 99. Denmark; 112. Pakistan; 115. Norway; 119. Sweden; 123. Finland; 139. Australia; 154. UAE; 156. South Africa; 159. Kuwait; 166. Qatar.

In his book, Atty. Lacson talked about simple things that every Filipino can easily do but somehow fail, neglect or forget to do when in doing these things, we can help our country.

These Little Things are:
1. Follow traffic rules
2. Whenever you buy or pay for anything, always ask for official receipt
3. Do not buy smuggled goods. Buy local, buy Filipino
4. When you talk to strangers, especially foreigners, speak positively about our race and our country
5. Respect your traffic officer, policemen and soldier
6. Do not litter
7. Support your church
8. During elections, do your solemn duty
9. Pay your employees well
10. Pay your taxes
11. Adopt a scholar or poor child

10 Embarrassing cellphone moments
Khulekani Madlela, Staff Writer
Published: March 07, 2008, 01:24

Nuru Jeneby is a sales executive, Metropolitan Hotel, Dubai

We all have our personal lists â€" of the zaniest/quirkiest/
funniest/craziest/smartest ... We devote this page to them.
This week, Nuru Jeneby lists ...

The show-stopper: As the opera reaches its climax, your favourite Hollywood ring tone fills the auditorium. The entire audience (and cast) turns and stares.

The interview gaffe:
Mid-interview, a familiar tune fills the room. "How very rude of me not to turn off my mobile," you say as you reach for your bag. But your phone is off. The MD has the same ring tone … and you've just insulted him.

The nightmare: When your colleague John sends a racy SMS at 2am, you immediately call back and shout at him for being an inconsiderate idiot. But â€" oops â€" your cousin borrowed your phone to text her friend yesterday and the message was actually from her John.

The courtroom drama: Just as the jury stands to read the verdict, off goes your cellphone and the furious judge charges you with contempt of court!

The bad connection:
Feeling sentimental you call your spouse to say how much you love him. But the gruff voice saying I love you too is not your hubby's ... you've punched in the wrong number.

The alarm bells: You're in the middle of asking your boss for leave when your alarm goes off: "Time to wake up.

It's 1pm." Yes, it's on speaker mode.

The hang-up: After leaving a voice message, you forget to hang up and your sarcastic comments are recorded. Ouch!

Street unsmart: You glance at
your caller ID, pull a face and choose to ignore the call.
A few seconds later, your snubbed friend waves
to you from across the road. Yes, she saw you choosing to drop her call.

Law and order: The caller ID says it's your hubby so you answer in your most provocative voice. But it's his mum â€" she borrowed his cell ...

The reply error:
You SMS a friend: "Boss bought my sick story! Ready for a day of fruit juice in the sun?" Five minutes later you're on your way to the office â€" you sent the message to your manager, not your mate.

The evolution of computer viruses
By Inam Abidi Amrohvi
Published: March 09, 2008, 00:03

Inam Abidi Amrohvi provides a brief history of the most common PC bugs.

If you own a PC or a laptop, chances are that you must have been the victim of a virus or a worm once. In 1995 when Microsoft offered a free anti-virus with its Windows 95 operating system, it was a sign of the times to come. You can't even imagine a computer system without an anti- virus software these days.

What is a virus?

In a simpler way, a virus is an unwanted programme that is loaded on your computer. Viruses can make multiple copies of themselves, in the process draining the system resources. This eventually brings the system to a halt.

Most viruses now are capable of transmitting across networks (both local and internet) and even fooling the security systems. These are the ones that cause maximum damage.

The first developers

The first virus instances date back to the 1960s and 1970s. As part of a game, programmers at AT&T's Bell Labs and at Xerox's Palo Alto lab challenged each others' programmers to software 'duels'. The programme which remained operative at the end of the execution was the winner.

It was 1986 when virus infections first shook the world. Developed by two selfâ€"taught Pakistani computer experts, Brain, was the first virus that could replicate from one PC to another. Basit Farooq Alvi, 26 and Amjad Farooq Alvi, 19, brothers and owners of a store in Lahore called Brain Computer Services, wrote the virus supposedly to check software piracy. Unfortunately, the virus somehow got out of Pakistan and infected computers worldwide. It didn't cause any harm though. Brain is still considered one of the best written viruses ever.

Some famous viruses

Cascade: First discovered in Switzerland in 1987, Cascade caused all the letters on the screen to fall into a pile at the bottom (explains the name). The original form of the virus was activated between October and December 1980 (default date for all PCs earlier) or 1988.

Dark Avenger: First discovered in late 1989 in Bulgaria, Dark Avenger is the common name for a series of viruses. The virus infected a particular kind of file, and when the count reached 16 the virus removed some data from the hard disk.

Joshi: Popularly known as 'Happy Birthday Joshi', the virus was first discovered in India in June 1990, and soon hit the US and Africa. The infected system displays the message "type Happy Birthday Joshi" on a green background every January 5. Joshi is similar to Brain in the way it is written, and it too is more of an annoyance than a real threat.

Ping-Pong: Also known as the Italian virus or the Bouncing Ball virus, Ping-Pong was first discovered in Italy in 1988. The virus is triggered only occasionally and randomly. Once it activates, a dot begins to bounce around the screen. The dot will go through any characters on the screen, replacing them as it moves on.

Michelangelo: Discovered in mid-1991 this virus generated mass media frenzy. Michelangelo was created to trigger every March 6,(the birth date of the famous painter Michelangelo) and attempted to destroy the hard disk.

Melisa: First found in 1999, Melissa is classified as a macro virus (a virus that infects a Microsoft Word or similar application). When somebody opened the infected Word document received via email, the virus sent a copy of itself to the first 50 people in the victim's address book. The virus played havoc with the email systems of corporations and governments around the world.

Invisibility : It would be so cool to be able to listen in on "private' governmental meetings. It would also be cool because then I would know what people think instead of guessing. People tend to tell the truth when they are talking to someone else about you, but not always to your face. I personally value honest opinions.

Inspiration & Hope / Drop the pretenses
March 06, 2008, 07:33:43 PM

Have you ever thought about what an extraordinary burden your pretenses create? In the service of your various pretenses, you waste much time, treasure, effort and emotional energy.
And what do those pretenses accomplish for you? Even if you are highly successful at maintaining them, the most they can bring are the resentments of others.

The pretenses you strive to create and support are, by any reasonable measure, simply not worth having. And fortunately, they're very easy to discard.

What happens when you choose to let go of your pretenses? You experience a wonderful, refreshing and positively exhilarating sense of freedom.

The power and fulfillment you seek through your pretenses can be yours the moment you drop those useless pretenses. The way to be most impressive and effective is to most authentically be the person you are.

Pretense and true confidence cannot both exist in the same space. Drop the pretenses, and watch your confidence rightfully soar.

Ralph Marston

Inspiration & Hope / The chorus of all that is
March 06, 2008, 07:32:15 PM

You are part of a greater whole. Without you, the whole cannot fully express itself, and without the whole, you are desperately empty.
You are vitally and uniquely important. But that does not make you more important than others. Your thoughts, ideas and actions have the power to transform. But that doesn't give you the right to overwhelm.

Instead, it gives you the obligation to serve. It gives you the opportunity to contribute to something bigger than yourself, something that gracefully encompasses all you are.

By so giving, you enlarge your own life and the world around you. By so giving, you create real value and meaning, and experience profound fulfillment.

Sing your own song, with a passion that comes from the center of your being. And delight in how beautifully it resonates within the chorus of all that is.
