A man married a pillow.

A Korean man named Lee Jin-gyu fell in love with a life-sized Japanese body pillow called a "dakimakura". The pillow has the image of a cartoon character named Fate Testarossa on it, from an anime called Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha.

The 28-year-old man takes his pillow with him everywhere and eventually got married to it. This is actually part of a broader cultural phenomenon. There is a growing subculture of men in Japan who engage in romantic relationships with pillows that have cartoons on them. People who have difficulty with romantic relationships with real (3-dimensional) people instead find themselves attracted to 2-dimensional anime characters.

FREE 'NO WIFI' ZONE

Free WiFi is available almost everywhere we go. People are constantly online, busy with their electronic gadgets all the time. Kit Kat have seen an opportunity to give people a break. So instead of offering Free WiFi like every other brand, the company created a Free No-WiFi Zone. A big sign with a small WiFi jammer that blocked all signals within a five meter radius. People was also encouraged to read a newspaper, a real book or have a genuine conversation again. All while munching on a Kit Kat.

Literally giving people a break!

Cama:
Bred as a pet, the cama is smaller to and friendlier than the infamously ill-tempered camel. Camas are kept as pets in many parts of the world and are often referred to as terrific companions by their owners. And, of course it doesn’t hurt that these little guys have a cute radar over the roof.

World's Smallest Petrol Engine:

Scientists have created the smallest petrol engine in the world ( less than a centimeter long not even half an inch ), small enough to power a watch or any small gadget. The mini-motor, which runs for two years on a single squirt of lighter fuel, is set to revolutionize world technology. It generates 700 times more energy than a conventional battery. It could be used to operate laptops and mobile phones for months doing away with the need for charging. Experts believe it could be phasing out batteries in such items within just six years. The engine, minute enough to be balanced on a fingertip, has been produced by engineers at the University of Birmingham.

Weird Diseases- Arostegui Syndrome (Lion Face Syndrome) Leontiasis Ossea, also known as Arostegui's syndrome or leontiasis or lion face, is a rare medical condition, characterized by an overgrowth of the facial and cranial bones.

The common form gradually develops, going on later to a complete loss of sight due to compression of the optic nerve by the overgrowth of bone. There may also be interference with the nasal respiration and with the taking of food. In the somewhat less common form of this rare disease the overgrowth of bone affects all the cranial bones as well as those of the face, the senses being lost one by one and death finally resulting from cerebral pressure. There is no treatment other than exposing the overgrown bone, and chipping away pieces, or excising entirely where possible.

Quote from: islander on June 29, 2013, 03:47:00 AM
What is the cycle of abuse?

A cycle of abuse occurs in some families. The family's life becomes a cycle of violence. Life begins to revolve around anticipating violence; coping with actual acts of violence; or recovering from the violence.

Ironically, a family can become tremendously close in the recovery phase. The man who was terrifying and intimidating turns into a remorseful, needy, and dependent man. The woman who was battered then will feel sorry for the man and recommit to him in a fantasized hope that the abuse won't happen again. But the cycle of abuse will begin again, often becoming worse.

The cycle of abuse can only be broken with awareness and professional help.

I remember this one when I attended Gender and Development (GAD) Seminar way back 2010.. one of the topics discuss was VAWC (Violence Against Women and Children)

A cat's tongue is covered in backwards facing spines, about 500 microns long. These are called papillae and they contain keratin (the same stuff your fingernails and hair is made of) making them quite rigid. These are used in grooming and act almost like a hairbrush.

I won't show you a photo of this, but a cat's tongue isn't the only body part to have spines. The penis has a band of about 120â€"150 backwards-pointing penile spines, which are about one millimeter long. These rake the inside of the females vagina, triggering ovulation.

So there you go. Now you know why a cat's tongue feels like sandpaper, and why female cats make such a loud noise when mating!

10. The guide dog who come back to save his owner during the WTC attack

On Sept. 11, 2001, Omar Eduardo Rivera, a blind computer technician, was working on the 71st floor of the World Trade Center with his guide dog, Dorado. When the hijacked plane hit the tower, Rivera knew it would take him a long time to evacuate the building, but he wanted his Labrador retriever to have a chance to get out so he unclipped his leash in the crowded stairwell. “I thought I was lost forever â€" the noise and the heat were terrifying â€" but I had to give Dorado the chance of escape. So I unclipped his leash, ruffled his head, gave him a nudge and ordered Dorado to go,” Rivera said.

9. The husky who tracked owner to hospital

A husky missed his owner so much that the canine somehow tracked him to a hospital two miles away in the middle of the night. Zander the white husky was a shelter dog who was rescued by John Dolan five years before. When Dolan was hospitalized in a Long Island, New York hospital with a skin condition, Zander became very depressed and was moping around the house. So the dedicated husky snuck out at 3 a.m. and amazingly found Dolan at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip. A hospital employee found the dog on the street outside of building where Dolan was being treated. The nurse called the number on Zander's collar which turned out to be Dolan's cell phone number; he answered the phone from his hospital bed. Dolan's wife later came over and retrieved Zander. The dedicated dog even made a second trip to the hospital later.

A pet owner in France was reportedly prevented from committing suicide by her dog after it decided it was not yet ready to see her go. The 63-year-old female decided to end it all in her backyard in Sorgues but her German shepherd apparently had a different idea. In desperation, the loyal pet reportedly did what anyone else who loved her would have done and collided with the elderly woman in an attempt to get her to drop the gun. "[The dog] probably sensed things and knocked into her to save her," a police officer said. The woman suffered a chest wound but was not seriously hurt and should make a full recovery.

South Carolina man, 78, wears sandwich board to help wife of 57 yrs in search for life-saving kidney.

Larry Swilling is truly devoted to his wife, Jimmie Sue, they have been married for 57 years he is looking for a kidney to give his 76-year-old wife, the life-saving organ she needs
Larry Swilling and his wife Jimmie Sue have been happily married 57 years. So happily, in fact, that Larry has now come to realize the downside of loving someone so much you can’t live without them.

Jimmie Sue needs a kidney donor and no one in the family is a suitable match, so Larry has taken to the streets to try to find one.

“She’s my heart,” he said.

Heart has never been an issue for these two.

What’s always been lacking is a kidney. Jimmie Sue was born with only one, and now that one is shot. She needs a transplant but neither her husband, nor anyone tested in her family, is a suitable match.

Jimmie Sue is on a donor list, but the wait is about two or three years long and that’s for a kidney from a deceased donor. Transplant patients who get their kidneys from living donors tend to live longer.

Which is why Larry decided to try a completely radical approach to securing a kidney: asking for it, from total strangers.
“I don’t care what people think,” Larry said. He tells his wife, “I’m going to get you a kidney.”

Never mind that most people won’t give panhandlers their pocket change, let alone their vital organs. A few months ago, Larry, at 77, has been walking all over his hometown of Anderson, S.C. and the surrounding towns basically begging for a kidney.

And on out on the street, wearing a signboard â€" “Need kidney 4 wife” â€" he’s not shy in asking passersby: “I sure could use your kidney.”

6. Piss Christ

This photograph is here for a reason - a big controversy. This is the work of a notorious American photographer Andres Serrano who uses feces, corpses, and bodily fluids in his work. In 1987, he created a photograph titled Piss Christ, which depicted a small plastic crucifix submerged in a glass of the artist’s urine. In 1989, the image was displayed for the first time and the event caused a massive scandal. Andres Serrano received death threats over the controversy, too. 3. 7/7 London Bombings

Dated July 7, 2005, CCTV cameras captured the bombers entering Luton station. An official inquiry by the British government indicated that the tape claiming responsibility had been edited after July 7. The lack of facts surrounding the case and its unusual timeline led to controversies. Also, controversially, no other CCTV images, either still or moving, have ever been released. Secondly, the photo is timed at four seconds before 7.22 am, which would have given the men only three minutes to walk up the stairs at Luton, buy their tickets, and move to the platform.
