Coffee Makes You Smarter
June 5, 2009 by Quantum Publisher

Brain scans have confirmed what many coffee drinkers already know caffeine perks them up mentally. The caffeine found in coffee, tea, soft drinks, and even chocolate, stimulates areas of the brain governing short-term memory and attention, say Austrian researchers.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging scans performed on the brains of 15 subjects who had just consumed caffeine equal to that found in two cups of coffee showed increased activity in the frontal lobe where the working memory is located, and in the anterior cingulum that controls attention.

We are able to see that caffeine exerts increases in neuronal activity in distinct parts of the brain going along with changes in behavior, said Dr. Florian Koppelstatter of the Medical University Innsbruck.

Participants who were subjected to a 12-hour period without caffeine and a four-hour period without nicotine, another recognized stimulant found in cigarettes, were better able to remember a sequence of letters after consuming 100 milligrams of caffeine. Reaction times on short-term memory tests also improved.

Caffeine is the world’s most widely used stimulant, according to the research presented at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America. Global daily consumption of caffeine averages 1-1/2 cups of coffee. In the United States, the average consumption is 4-1/2 cups of java.

Binol-anon is generally regarded by linguists as a dialect of Cebuano, in consonance with the standard definition of "dialect" as a local variation of a language. Ang Cebuano dialect sa Bohol ug ang Cebuano dialect sa Negros lahi ra, pero notwithstanding differences--for instance in vocabulary and pronunciation--magkasinabot gihapon ang Bol-anon ug Negrense. Sa case ni Inday Misty, nga Koddi rightly suspects (and I'm inclined to agree with him) as growing up elsewhere because of some words she uses, ang iyang paggamit sa Binol-anon in terms of diction and what-not--nga iyaha ra individually--maoy gitawag sa linguistics og 'idiolect".

Anyway, basta variation lang sa Cebuano or Sinugboanon, in prose or verse, gigamit man sa Cebu o Bohol o Davao o Surigao, masabtan ra tang tanan sa langit.  :)

The honorrific title of 'Don' means "Sir, Lord, Sire" albeit it is in masculine form.
The honorrific title for a woman of the Peninsulare-Class (the aristocratic ruling class) would be "Dona, Dona Senora"

Donsillo or Donsilla would be used as a respective gesture.
A term that a working member of the gentry-class would use to refer to---the Gobernadorcillo and his wife or any member in the Peninsulare-Class.

The term "Donsillo/ Donsilla" illustrates how classed society was in the Spanish Epoch.
The same for any European Society in that time period. We see the same in Spain, as well.

Donsillo ---would be used to refer to the Lord Governor, or Lord Mayor.

Taym sa, klaroha kuno ni Doy Lorenzo. Naa ba goy honorific title nga Donsillo/Donsilla? Which part of the Spanish-speaking world man ni gigamit, and which epoch? Taronga kuno ning imong mga post kay naa baja tingali motuo nimo.

Pananglitan naay nag-estoryahanay unja mosapaw kag komentaryo, "saling-it" na. Pwedeng sab tingali kanang mosuot kas nagdasok nga mga tawo para makalusot ngadto sa hawan.

I haven't encountered the word "doncello" that refers to a male virgin. It would appear that the concept of the male virgin is nonexistent in the psyche of peoples who language is characterized by the use of the subjunctive mood.  ;)
#89927
Donselya is of course from the Spanish word "doncella" which means, historically and literarily, maiden, but it also means maidservant and well, yes, virgin. It may be noted that Schubert's "Der Tod und das Madchen" is usually rendered into English as "Death and the Maiden" but into Spanish as "La Muerte y la Doncella".

An archaic language is a language that is no longer used, or not used in everyday life, or used by a limited number of speakers. This certainly does not apply to Spanish. You may say that Spanish has archaic characteristics (as in declension) but it can't, linguistically or otherwise, be called an archaic language.

Ang "spooting" di man tingali mahimong gikan sa Spanish, kay "espooting" unta. Ang Spanish tongue ordinarily di man maka-pronounce sa inital "sp-" sound. Ilang butangag vowel or at least schwa sound before the "sp-", sama sa ilang gibuhat long ago sa mga Latin nga pulong nga misulod sa ilang vocabulary.  In fact, sigun sa mga Bisayista, ang "spelling" sa Binisaya "espeling" ("panitik" sa lunsayng Binisaya), obviously due to Spanish influence (and to our own Austronesian tongue, of course).

Courts face new challenges in faith healing cases

By ROSE FRENCH, Associated Press Writer Rose French, Associated Press Writer â€" Tue Jun 30, 4:20 am ET

NASHVILLE, Tenn. â€" Though most states have child abuse laws allowing religious exemptions for parents who shun medicine for their sick children, recent cases have raised the thorny legal issues for parents following less-recognized faiths.

Historically, many of the parents addressed by the laws have embraced faiths like Pentecostalism and Christian Science, while others are Jehovah's Witnesses â€" all established denominations that the law has gradually taken into account.

It's harder for judges to decide cases involving parents who don't belong to a well-known denomination, yet also don't believe in using medicine for their kids. Legal and religious scholars say it's becoming more difficult for courts to decide when to honor the religious beliefs of parents and when to order conventional medical treatment for extremely sick children.

The manslaughter trial of an Oregon couple who claim they were following their religious beliefs in the 2008 pneumonia death of their 1-year-old daughter was to begin Monday. Carl and Raylene Worthington are members of Followers of Christ Church, which has been investigated for past child deaths.

In Tennessee, Jacqueline Crank and her minister Ariel Sherman face child neglect charges in the death of her 15-year-old daughter Jessica, who died in 2002 with a basketball-sized tumor on her shoulder. Prosecutors say based on Sherman's advice, the girl's mother relied on prayer instead of medicine.

Sherman has been accused of being a cult leader whose Universal Life Church is not a legitimate religion. He has denied such charges and says the church is Christian-based and embraces the Bible.

Believers in faith healing point to a Biblical verse in the Epistle of James, which describes how church elders should be called in to pray over the sick. There's no mention of doctors, and literalists interpret it to mean medical treatment should be eschewed over prayer.

Is it a miracle that Colwich man survived?

Colwich athlete's story catches eye of Vatican investigator

BY ROY WENZL
The Wichita Eagle, Sunday, June 21, 2009

[Chase Kear suffered a traumatic brain injury while pole vaulting during a practice at Hutchinson Community College. The right side of Kear's skull was removed to relieve pressure off his swelling brain after the accident.

The piece of Chase Kear's skull that was removed during surgery to relieve pressure on his brain has been replaced with a ceramic piece. Kear was injured during a pole vaulting accident last October. An offical from the Vatican is scheduled to be in Wichita next week to investigate the canonization of Fr. Emil Kapuan. Relatives of Chase prayed the Fr. Kapaun prayer often while Chase was near death.]

COLWICH - "Chase survived in part because hundreds of people prayed to Father Emil Kapaun to intercede on his behalf. It was absolutely a miracle." â€" Paula Kear, Chase's mother

People in Colwich like to touch Chase Kear's arm or his shoulder with their fingers. Or they hug him. "Miracle Man," they say. "Let me touch the miracle." With anybody else in Colwich, this would be just talk. But it's not just talk to the Vatican.

Prompted in part by what the Kear family has said publicly, and partly by a preliminary investigation begun by the Catholic Diocese of Wichita, a Vatican investigator named Andrea Ambrosi will arrive from Italy in Wichita on Friday.

He will investigate on behalf of the church in Rome whether 20-year-old Chase Kear's survival qualifies as a miracle; whether he survived a severe head injury last year in part because his family and hundreds of friends successfully prayed thousands of prayers to the soul of Father Emil Kapaun, a U.S. Army chaplain from Pilsen, Kan., who died a hero in the Korean War.

Ambrosi, a lawyer by training, is coming here to thoroughly "and skeptically" investigate whether Chase's story is a miracle, said the Rev. John Hotze, the judicial vicar for the Wichita diocese. The church requires miracles to elevate a person to sainthood.

Hotze has investigated Kapaun's proposed sainthood for eight years, which is only a fraction of the time the church has been considering whether to elevate Kapaun to sainthood.

Soldiers came out of prisoner-of-war camps in 1953 with incredible stories about Kapaun's heroism and faith. Across Kansas, his memory is kept alive at Wichita's Kapaun Mount Carmel High School, in his hometown of Pilsen and elsewhere.

Kapaun is so well-known and so highly regarded by area Catholics that the diocese has received other reports of miracles involving Kapaun, Hotze said. Ambrosi on Friday will consult area physicians in at least three such cases, including Chase's, Hotze said.

Public warned over new ATM scam
By Doris Dumlao

Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 20:42:00 06/24/2009

MANILA, Philippines â€" The Bankers Association of the Philippines reminded the public to be more careful when using of automated teller machines (ATM), after the a new scam was uncovered.

The scam involves capturing the stored personal identification number (PIN), card number, and other relevant information by skimming the magnetic strip of the ATM card using a specialized scanner. The captured information is then copied to produce a duplicate ATM card, allowing the scammers to make withdrawals without the card holder's knowledge.

The call for added vigilance was triggered by a recent case of ATM fraud in the United Arab Emirates.

States could lose money over prison rapes

By JENNIFER C. KERR, Associated Press Writer Jennifer C. Kerr, Associated Press Writer â€" Tue Jun 23, 5:20 pm ET

WASHINGTON â€" New measures aimed at reducing prison rapes are in the works â€" and states that fail to take steps to protect their inmates could see their federal money cut.

The new standards were proposed Tuesday by the National Prison Rape Elimination Commission, a bipartisan panel that spent five years studying the issue. It's estimated that about 60,000 inmates are sexually abused each year.

With more than 7.3 million people behind bars or on parole and probation in the U.S., the report said jails and prisons should take a series of steps to eliminate sexual abuse of inmates. Those steps include the adoption of zero tolerance policies, better staff training and improved screening to identify prisoners vulnerable to abuse.

"Individuals who are incarcerated have basic human rights," said U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton, chairman of the commission. "Just because they've committed a crime and they're incarcerated does not mean that their human dignity can be abused."

The proposed standards are being sent to Attorney General Eric Holder, who has a year to write national standards. States will be notified of the finalized standards and then must adopt them or risk losing 5 percent of any federal prison grant money.

Some of the report's key findings:

• Inmates who are short, young, gay, or female were more likely to be victimized than other inmates.

• Even when inmates are willing to report abuse, their accounts are not always taken seriously and reported to appropriate officials.

In a 2007 study, the Bureau of Justice Statistics found that more than 60,000 inmates are sexually abused every year. The study found that 4.5 percent of those surveyed reported being sexually abused in the previous 12 months.

That study also said more prisoners reported abuse by staff than by other prisoners: 2.9 percent to about 2 percent, respectively.

Makasabot man tuod ang kadaghanan nato ug bisan unsang English, ilabi na kadtong way kahadlokan.  Mao nga kita na ang mo-quality control.  Wa koy problema sa Iningles as long as the product does not touch the skin or hair (except cloths), way koryente involved, ug di tunlon.

Makalingaw baja pud ang akong nagunitan (ug natan-aw) nga mga DVD; klaro, way sami, ug affordable.  The DVD album titles?  "Irritable Gunfight" (Westerns).  "Overvalued Enjoy" (All-Time Favorites).  Terrorist Collection" (Horror Movies).  This terrorist enjoyed the undervalued collection of gunfights without irritation. ;) :D ;D 8) :P

Taking Instructions

Globalization may be a boon.  It makes for a faster and freer flow of goods and services between countries and opens the floodgates of competition to the advantage of consumers.

Amazing.  Tomatoes from Taiwan can be had for one-third the price of tomatoes from Baguio.  And containerized cargo from China costs only a fifth of the price of transporting a similar cargo from Manila to Cebu, I found out in disbelief.

The fact is end-users can now have better and cheaper goods and services, and more choices.  But caveat emptor!  Consumers who depend on language to tell the best and safest way to use a product are in for a surprise.  Goods may flow faster, but it looks like language has been left behind.

I see a contraption for hot oil shampoo on a shelf in a department store. Fucction:  It can improve hair assimilating in the suitable temperature.  Using way is handy, insert power supply again put on electric cap is good.  Leaving overall zipped down and stripped can be washed, the blurb on its box declares.

Okay, okay.  So this handy, washable electric cap that can improve my hair should be plugged.  But how does one zip down and strip at the same time her overalls?

A hot oil shampoo is one hair care ritual that I do myself.  Having no contrivances like those found in beauty salons, I make do with warm towels or plastic bath caps.  I would love this contraption and have to know how to use it.

Using Way, the title for the how-to says.  The first, hair processed slectionic hair oil treatment.  Wrapped up the whole hair again put on electric cap. Now, now; if I have to wrap my head where my hair is, because this apparatus is for my crowning unglory to begin with, what is this ritual about having to wrap it twice?

The instruction goes on:  The two tapes end respectively pulled open again moving, fixed ring width can suitable completely.  Ahhh, so the tape in the apparatus is adjustable, with both ends having rings that fit together.  Not bad, not bad.

More tips:  Ex.  It can be using after the power line in serted outlet, in winter, indoor temperature is the lower, it can insert power supply.  I am literal when it comes to instructions for things that require electric current.  Self-preservation requires that I should avoid holding the tiger by its tail.  At this point, I was beginning to hear the tiger growl.  In winter at that.

Put down the fixed ring after 15-20 minuters, again loosen the roe, then taker electric cap, but must remember pulling out the plug.  Here comes the warning.  I should unplug the electric wire that connects the apparatus, what else.  But how to put down the rings after 15-20 minutes and loosen the roe of the catfish that are jumping as high as the sky?  I am complicating my life.

Washed hair with wammer water, if washed hair, must washing with pomade.  I want to cry.  If I have to wash my hair with warm water, must I use pomade?  And by the way, is pomade still available in the market fortysomething years after Elvis Presley, whose hair looked cared for and licked by a loving Mama cow?

At last, dride hair with the ordinary way again mended the type.  Ahem.  At last, indeed.  My hair can be dried the old-fashioned way, which starts with a towel and ends by letting the tropical weather do its job.  But I wondered what it is that I have to mend; my hair, the type of breeze, or the holes in my socks.

Thankfully, the manufacturer of this hair care aid had the safety of its buyer in mind.  Under the heading Notes were warnings and maintenance tips.  Hair can’t have hairpin or meedle for preventing electric current, the notes begin.

Cant wrumple up a electric cap into a ball again.  Binded with electric line.  Don’t washing directly after using.  It wipe the shroud with wet clothes.  Overall can wash lightly with wammer water (in 40°C) and can’t wash with washing machine, so prven from becoming deformed. At least, the temperature was easy to understand.  I’ve always preferred the metric centigrade to the English Fahrenheit.

I was left with a choice.  I can buy the contraption or end up with a purchase I’d regret.  The electric gadget looked like an oversized Jacqueline Kennedy pillbox hat when Elvis Presley was still around.  A hair care expert may teach me its use but I would need an electrical engineer too.  Otherwise, I imagined following Queen Nefertiti with her fabulous headdress.

Thought it was better to just take down the instructions, pure and unadulterated.  I was writing when a customer asked me where the hair clips are.  Serves me right for enjoying an unusual read instead of buying something.  Please ask a salesgirl; I’m the supervisor here, I answered.  I think she believed me as much as I believed the instructions I was copying.

While I haven't been closely following political developments in the Philippines of late, I understand that a good number of politicians and political analysts have suggested that federalism stands a good chance of curing the Philippine body politic of its endemic ills. Personally I haven't read enough political science nor probed deeply enough my own Filipino psyche to confidently hazard a guess as to how a federal form of government would fare in the Philippine setting, but I am doubly certain that Resolution No 1109 is a brazen maneuver that I, as a Filipino, am deeply ashamed of.    :'(
