Longmont woman accused of raping male friend

By Heath Urie, Thursday, January 29, 2009

LONGMONT, Colo. â€" A 53-year-old Longmont woman was arrested Wednesday on suspicion that she drugged a male friend during a backyard barbecue and then raped him, police said.

Janice Lynette McCarl was booked into the Boulder County Jail at 7:40 p.m. Wednesday on suspicion of sexual assault, a class-three felony.

Lewis said McCarl is accused of having inappropriate sexual contact with a 50-year-old male friend.

“She allegedly took unwanted advantage of this friend in a manner he did not want or approve of,” Lewis said.

The man told detectives the incident happened on Nov. 9 at his Longmont house and involved “unwanted penetration.”

The man reported that he was at a barbecue at his home with McCarl. He said he felt “funny” after some drinks â€" which he later told investigators were drugged â€" and went inside and passed out.

About a half-hour later, he claims, he awoke with a painful sensation. He said he remembered waking up intermittently with the woman’s “hands in him.”

He said he could not fully wake up or move, and remembered the woman telling him, “It is OK, go back to sleep.”

He told detectives he recalled waking up the next morning to find the woman sleeping next to him â€" her shirt covered in blood and lotion, and a bottle of Lubriderm on the table near the woman.

Janine D’Anniballe, the executive director of Boulder’s Moving to End Sexual Assault, said the Longmont case is only the second time in her 10 years with the agency that she’s heard of such an incident.

“These types of cases, where there is an adult woman with an adult male, are very rare,” she said. “Certainly, women can be offenders, but usually their victims are children or young adults. Men can be victims, but usually as children or young adults or with male perpetrators.”

D’Anniballe said there is often a stigma associated with anyone who is a victim of a sexual assault, but that effect is magnified for male victims.

“There’s this idea that, because he’s a man, he should have just enjoyed it,” she said. “In this case, that is a gross misstatement.

One-dog policy in Chinese city forces tough choice

By WILLIAM FOREMAN â€" Jun 17, 2009

GUANGZHOU, China (AP) â€" Mrs. Chen can't imagine abandoning one of her two best friends: her scruffy terrier mutt and a white fluffy Pekingese mix with buggy eyes.

But that's what the government in this southern Chinese city wants the middle-aged housewife to do when a one-dog policy takes effect in Guangzhou.

Beginning July 1, each household can raise only one pooch. The regulation won't be grandfathered in, so families with two or more dogs will apparently have to decide which one gets to stay.

"It's a cruel regulation. These dogs are like family. How can you keep one and get rid of the others?" said Chen, who declined to give her full name because she feared the police would track her down and seize the dogs.

Such dog controls have touched off resentment among urban â€" mostly new middle class â€" Chinese in other cities. The Guangzhou measure comes as many are worrying about the economy, and there's potential for the regulation to trigger a public backlash.

Police and city government officials appear to be aware of the issue's sensitivity. The Associated Press spent three weeks making calls and sending faxes to officials requesting an interview about the policy. But after the requests were passed back and forth between the police and city government, neither agreed to discuss it.

The regulation appears to be part of an effort to control stray dogs in Guangzhou, once known as Canton. An hour north of Hong Kong by train, it is one of the richest cities in China and has a rapidly growing middle class that can afford to own dogs.

You see, Hubag, understanding the word and its meaning is like understanding and reading the Bible. One needs to DISCERN the meaning of the word, and its true meaning, and stick to the main picture. What you are doing is similar to selectively reading a verse, and not reading the entire passage in a particular biblical gospel. hehehe!
Ug mo follow ka ing anang style nimo, ma confused jud ka if you read the bible because the best way to read scripture is to read passage by passage in relation to the entire message of that chapter, or book and then compare it to the message of other books in scripture. hehehe.

Frenemy, locavore among new words in Webster's

By RUSSELL CONTRERAS, Associated Press Writer Russell Contreras, Associated Press Writer â€" July 9, 2009

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. â€" Do you use a sock puppet to secretly keep track of your frenemies?

Plan to spend your staycation watching vlogs and webisodes? Or perhaps you plan to signal a flash mob for a quick bite of shawarma.

If you're not entirely certain what all that means, turn to the latest edition of the Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, which has added about 100 new words that largely reflect changing trends in American society.

John Morse, president and publisher of the Springfield-based dictionary publisher, said many of this year's new words are tied to changes in technology, increasing environmental awareness and aging baby boomers' concerns about their health and have become part of the general lexicon.

"These are not new words in the language, by any means," Morse said. "(But) when words like 'neuroprotective' and 'cardioprotective' show up in the Collegiate, it's because we've made the judgment that these are not just words used by specialists. ... These really are words now likely to show up in The New York Times, in The Wall Street Journal."

There are words such as locavore (one who eats foods grown locally), frenemy (someone who acts like a friend but is really an enemy), waterboarding (an interrogation technique use to induce the sensation of drowning), vlogs (a blog that contains video material) and webisode (a TV show that can be viewed at a Web site).

There's also flash mob (a group of people summoned electronically to a designated spot at a specified time to perform an indicated action before dispersing) and green-collar (involving actions for protecting the natural environment).

Some words that just now made the cut have been around for generations. The term "sock puppet" â€" a false online identity used for deceptive purposes â€" was tracked to 1959 but has taken on new popular use with people using fake IDs on social networking sites.

Many words have cross-cultural roots, including shawarma (a sandwich especially of sliced lamb or chicken, vegetables, and often tahini wrapped in pita bread) and reggaeton (music of Puerto Rican origin that combines rap and Caribbean rhythms).

Once words like these become so common that they regularly pop up in conversations and published articles, Morse said they pass muster for being included in the dictionary.

Some words, such as "staycation," have become so popular the dictionary could not ignore them, Morse said. Staycation refers to staying home for vacation and has gained popularity as the economy worsens.

Sa Pilipinas, ang "karamba" duha ang meaning, depende kon kinsay nagsulti:

1. Kon Katsila, kini expression sa kasuko, katingala, o kasakit. (As in, "Ay, karamba. Donde esta la silya tumba-tumba.")

2. Kon Hapon, ah, buot ipasabot kon diin matawo si Rizal. (So desu ka, Karamba, Raguna.)

Joke joke joke!

Tinuod jud tingali nga brayt ang uwak kay kuno more than 2,500 years ago si Aesop nagsuwat man og fable nga atong nailhan karon nga "The Crow and the Pitcher."

:)

The Crow and the Pitcher

No rain had fallen for many weeks. All the small streams and the ponds were dried up.

An old crow had been looking for water all the morning. At last he found some in a pitcher in a garden. He flew down to it and thrust in his bill; but he could not reach the water.

He walked around to the other side and tried again; but he could not get a drink. Oh, how very thirsty he was! It seemed as if he should faint.

"I must have that water. I will have it," he said.

Again he stretched his neck into the pitcher. No, he could not reach it.

He stopped a second and seemed to be thinking; then he said, "I will break the pitcher. My bill is strong and hard." So he gave the pitcher a hard thump. It did not break. He "thumped! thumped! thumped!" first here, then there. What a strong pitcher that was! It did not even crack.

"This will not do," he said. "I must try some other plan. I am big and strong. I will tip the pitcher over."

With that he pushed against it with his breast. It did not move. It seemed as if he must give up the attempt to get the water, but he did not once think of doing that.

Near by in the path lay some pebbles. The crow picked up one in his bill and let it fall into the pitcher. He dropped one after another into it. He could see the water rising a little. Now he worked harder than ever.

Before very long the water had risen so high that he could reach it with his bill. How refreshing it was! He drank as much as he wished, then flew away.

quote from fdaray: Again , I would say, "can trees substitute  for crops ? Moabot ang panahon, kahoy na ang daghan ug wala nay crops.

a balance between planting trees and agricultural crops will have to be struck to ensure that people continue to have basic food source - unless people are ready and willing to munch on tree leaves when they get hungry.

the best way to maintain said balance would be to plant trees in watersheds and areas that have steep inclines that are prone to erosion and therefore not conducive to farming, and establish farms where the terrain is flatter and more suitable to agricultural production.

in plain and simple terms: mananon tag kahoy sa bukid ug bakilid, mag farm ta sa patag.

Sakto jud. Dili nato supakon ang terrain.

Ang nakita nahong problema naa sa implementation, unsaon man nga ang atong local government can--and do--get its act together.

Looking further however--and from a larger economic perspective--another important consideration would be the concept of comparative advantage. After all, Bohol does not exist in isolation, and therefore there is no need for us Boholanos to produce everything that we need.

A hypothetical scenario: After years of massive and successful reforestation, Bohol has become a virtual forest aside from ample areas reserved for the needs of human habitation. Agricultural production is reduced to a minimum. However, the province earns so much money from its forest resources such that it can easily afford to buy food items from neighboring provinces, even from other countries.

(Mag-reserve jud hinuon tag luna para sa typically Bohol crops, sama sa kinampay, he he.)

Nindot baja i-approach ang isyu sa superstition from the point of view of pantheism which, though it has many variants, maintains in fine that God and the universe (or nature) are one and the same. This way, superstition can be understood as a way of making sense of the world around us--which means, therefore, trying to define our relationship with God. Superstitious people are religious people. Para naho, ang mga tawo nga superstitious ug ang mga Kristyano sarado have more in common than atheists have with agnostics.

Tamblot then prayed to Ay Sono and then cut the bamboo stalk from a groove and out came rice and wine. (“Medina’s Historia 1630-34,” Blair & Robertson, Vol. 24, p. 116). Tamblot won the challenge and the people sided with Tamblot. Only the towns of Baclayon and Loboc remained loyal to the Spaniards. The Spaniards said it was trickery and the work of the demon.

"Yet the same account in “Medina’s Historia” said that when Alcalde Mayor Juan Alcarazo was hit by a stone, got wounded and fell to the ground, he arose cured by calling on the Holy Child. It was called a miracle! But when Tamblot produced wine and rice from the bamboo stalk, prayed for rain and the rains came and the leaves turned into fishes, it was called trickery or the work of the demon. This is really biased reporting. The Spaniards did not deny the events but only attributed it to different sources, demon for Tamblot and Holy Child for the Spaniard."
