At the outer edges of the solar system lie two icy gas giants, Neptune and Uranus, both of which may play host to incredible diamond oceans. Beneath their atmospheres, both planets have similar mantles made up of water, ammonia, and methane ices. Due to their massive weights, their mantles are under a colossal amount of pressure where the temperature ranges between 1,727 degrees Celsius (3,141 °F) and 4,727 degrees Celsius (8,541 °F). It is under these extreme conditions that the methane breaks up into its core components, producing pure carbon, which under immense pressure forms into diamonds.

The high pressure coupled with the intense heat causes the diamonds to actually melt, forming diamond oceans toward the base of the mantle. Just as water in its solid form floats on top of its liquid component, solid diamond will float over liquid diamond, meaning there could well be actual “diamond-bergs” floating on top of the diamond oceans. There are even theories suggesting it actually rains diamonds on Uranus, too.

The existence of these magnificent oceans has been hypothesized through experiments at the Livermore National Laboratory, where scientists recreated the extreme conditions of the ice giant’s mantles through lasers, melting diamonds into their liquid form. Should these diamond oceans exist, then we will finally have an explanation as to why both planets have magnetic poles offset from their axes. -- http://listverse.com/

In a book full of iconic moments, one part of the Gospel of John stands out above all others: the moment when Jesus asks Peter three times if he loves Him. It’s a key moment in our understanding of Peter’s relationship to Christ. Unfortunately, it only works in the original Greek.

Unlike modern English, ancient Greek had multiple words for expressing love. Greeks could express their feelings using Eros (sexual love), Philia (friendship), or Agape (selfless love). In the Gospel of John, Jesus very specifically asks Peter twice if he loves Him using the term Agape (“do you selflessly love Me?”) Peter, who later denies knowing Jesus, can only respond with Philia (“I love You as a friend“).

The choice of words becomes even more important when Jesus asks Peter the third time. Instead of saying “Agape” again, He switches to “Philia,” coming down to Peter’s level. This explains why Peter gets recoils at being asked the third time. By throwing his words back at him, Jesus is showing Peter the limitations of his devotion. For the Gospels’ original readers, this would be an absolutely pivotal scene. In English, it simply seems like the Son of God is hard of hearing. -- http://listverse.com/

Binignit
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Binignit is a Visayan vegetable soup from the central Philippines. The dish is traditionally made by Visayans with slices of sabá bananas, taro, and sweet potato.

The meat of a mature coconut is grated and the "thick" milk is extracted. Two cups of water are added to the grated coconut and a second extraction is made. This becomes the "thin" milk. This "thin" coconut milk extract is added to cubed kamote (sweet potato), gabi (taro) and ube (purple yam), sliced ripe sabá (plantain) and langka (jack fruit), and tapioca pearls. Sometimes, young coconut meat strips are also added. The mixture is brought to a boil; being stirred occasionally until done. Just before removal from the flame, the "thick" coconut milk is added.

The people of the neighbouring island of Leyte usually include landang (palm flour jelly balls), jackfruit, and anise, and thicken it with milled glutinous rice. The vegetables and the pearl sago are cooked in a mixture of water, coconut milk and landang, and sweetened by muscovado or brown sugar.

The soup is usually cooked and eaten during Holy Week, especially during Good Friday when the faithful are fasting. A popular afternoon snack, it is best served when hot. Some Filipinos serve it chilled or even frozen, eating the dessert much like ice cream.

It is comparable to various guinataán (coconut milk-based) dishes found in other regions such as bilo-bilo. Binignit is also called "giná-tan" in Bikolano, "tabirák" in Mindanao Cebuano, "alpahor" in Chavacano, "ginettaán" in Ilokano, and "ginat-an" in Hiligaynon and Waray.

Binignit

Pamahaw binignit, paniudto binignit, panihapon binignit, isnaks binignit.

Sa iningles pa, what is the essence of binignit?

Nangamatay na ra ba to sila.

Kon naa pa to siya dinhi karon, binignit sab to iyang kan-on.”

(@Insoymada) -- http://www.sunstar.com.ph/

A report by Jorge Cariño, ABS-CBN News
ANC â€" Wed, Mar 25, 2015

Mayor Junjun Binay clarified that there was no sarcasm intended when his father, Vice President Jejomar Binay, said he is considering Secretary Mar Roxas as a possible running-mate in the 2016 presidential election.

"Ang naging sagot niya dun is that ah meron syang listahan ng mga taong pinagpipilian at ah kasama nga dun si Secretary Roxas. And the idea there is to unify this country," said Mayor Binay.

He explained that the intent of the Vice-President is to unite this country and to avoid putting people in a compromising situation whenever politicians figure in a scuffle.

He said that while he was not beside the Vice-President when the statement was made, he confirmed the name of Secretary Roxas is indeed part of his father's list of potential running-mates in the 2016 elections.

"I believe that the Vice-President is serious in choosing a vice-presidential candidate, one who should be competent," the mayor said.

No nation recognizes China 9-dash line: Philippines
ANC â€" Thu, Mar 26, 2015

The Philippine government on Thursday said no nation in the world is recognizing the validity of China's territorial claims over the majority of the South China Sea as shown by the recent statements of US senators and Indonesian President Joko Widodo.

In a forum, Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario thanked the Indonesian president for his statement that China's main claims to the majority of the South China Sea had no legal basis in international law.

"It reaffirms the belief that no country in the world recognizes that the 9-dash line is a valid claim on the part of China," he said.

China claims 90 percent of the South China Sea, which is believed to be rich in oil and gas. Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Taiwan lay claim to parts of the sea, where about $5 trillion of ship-borne trade passes every year.

The territorial dispute is seen as one of Asia's hot spots, carrying risks that it could spiral out of control and result in conflict as countries aggressively stake their claims.

In the forum, Del Rosario accused China of accelerating its expansionist agenda by changing the size, structure and physical attributes of land features in the South China Sea.

He also said China is backing the level of the resources it is placing in consolidating its presence in the South China Sea with an aggressive public diplomacy campaign.

"China is aware it has to engage in a battle of public opinion and shape the narrative in its favor given the weak legal case it is standing on," he said. â€"ABS-CBNnews.com with reports from Reuters

It was the face that launched a thousand side-eyes. The above photo became an iconic example of how to throw shade. But what was the story behind the notoriously catty picture? In 1957, Sophia Lorenâ€"who had just rocketed to Hollywood fame from Europeâ€"decided to host her own Beverly Hills party, inviting the biggest and most influential stars of the time. Aspiring actress and nightclub entertainer Jayne Mansfield had also been invited, and she was the last to arrive. Mansfield had already gained a reputation for using high-profile events to stage “accidental” mishaps that boosted her own media presence.

Loren no doubt knew this herself. She explains that when Mansfield waltzed over to her table in a revealing dress and planted herself next to Loren, the whole room was watching. The event was intended as Loren’s introduction to the Hollywood circuit, but Mansfield was stealing the show. Despite years of speculation, it wasn’t until decades later that Loren explained just what she was thinking about when the historic photograph was taken: fear of a monumental wardrobe malfunction.

Loren said she felt sorry for Mansfield and her choice of dress and was staring “at her nipples because I [was] afraid they [were] going to come onto my plate.” Other photographs surfaced from the night where the two seem far more relaxed, but Loren maintains that it was this picture that best represents how she felt toward Mansfield. Despite this, Loren refuses to sign copies of it out of respect for the late actress, who passed away 47 years ago. -- http://listverse.com/

Both Olivia de Havilland and Joan Fontaine were incredibly successful, Oscar-winning actresses, but their behavior toward one another wouldn’t suggest that they were sisters. The two women made no secret of their hatred, which supposedly began when they were children. Fontaine’s autobiography paints a picture of de Havilland as aggressive and abusiveâ€"even purposefully attempting to fracture her younger sister’s collarbone on one occasionâ€"while interviews with the two sisters suggest an element of jealousy in the relationship. De Havilland’s career took off a lot earlier than Fontaine’s, and Fontaine complained that she was seen as “the usurper” by her mother.

By the 1940s, the two were competing for Hollywood roles and Oscar nominations. In 1942, they came head-to-head when Fontaine won an award for her role in Suspicion over her older sister. When de Havilland won her own Oscar in 1947, she refused to shake the host’sâ€"Fontaine’sâ€"hand. The two also competed for men: Fontaine’s first marriage was to her sister’s previous boyfriend.

The estrangement between the two only increased with their mother’s death in 1975. Fontaine claimed that de Havilland refused to invite her to the funeral, whereas de Havilland claimed that Fontaine had been too busy to attend. The sisters did not speak for over 35 years after the event, up until Fontaine’s death in 2013. -- http://listverse.com/

As two of the biggest female stars in Hollywood history, the bitter feuds between Joan Crawford and Bette Davis have become the stuff of legend. However, there are numerous rumors as to how this rivalry arose. Reporter Michael Thornton, who was close to Davis, suggested that she had been humiliated when the bisexual Crawford attempted to hit on her. However, Davis hinted that the unbreakable hatred began when Crawford married Franchot Tone, a man Davis was in love with. Davis stated, “I have never forgiven her for that and never will.

”After years of competing for roles, Crawford and Davis finally came to a head in the infamous Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? What was supposed to be acting turned into physical abuse. Crawford suffered a head wound that required stitches after Davis kicked her in one scene. In turn, Davis claimed that she almost broke her back when she was required to carry Crawford on the set, because Crawford had chosen to wear a weighted belt during the scene.

But whichever side you take, it became clear after their deaths that neither of the actresses were angels. Crawford’s adopted daughter gained fame with her infamous account of the physical and emotional abuse she suffered in Mommie Dearest, while Davis’s daughter made similar accusations about Davis in My Mother’s Keeper. -- http://listverse.com/

"After your body converts carbohydrates into glucose, any leftover fuel gets converted into a polysaccharide carbohydrate called glycogen," added Dr James.

"Your liver and muscles store glycogen for energy and quickly turn it back into glucose as needed. The issue is that the excess glucose that doesn't get converted to glycogen ends up turning into fat, which can lead to excessive weight or obesity."

The team experimented with 38 kinds of rice from Sri Lanka, developing a new way of cooking rice that increased the RS content.

In this method, they added a teaspoon of coconut oil to boiling water. Then, they added a half a cup of rice. They simmered this for 40 minutes, but one could boil it for 20-25 minutes instead, the researchers note.

Then, they refrigerated it for 12 hours. This procedure increased the indigestible starch by 10 times for traditional, non-fortified rice.

It works because the coconut oil enters the starch granules during cooking, essentially changing their architecture so that they are no longer affected by digestive enzymes. SO fewer calories are absorbed into the body.

"The cooling is essential because amylose, the soluble part of the starch, leaves the granules during gelatinization," added Dr James.

"Cooling for 12 hours will lead to formation of hydrogen bonds between the amylose molecules outside the rice grains which also turns it into a resistant starch."

He says that the next step will be to complete studies with human subjects to learn which varieties of rice might be best suited to the calorie-reduction process.

The team also will check out whether other oils besides coconut have the same effect.

Simple rice-cooking hack could reduce calories by 60 per cent

Cooking rice with a teaspoon of coconut oil then refrigerating it for 12 hours more than halves the number of calories absorbed by the body, scientists have shown

It sounds too good to be true but a simple change to the way rice is cooked could reduce its calorie content by 60 per cent.

Scientists in Sri Lanka have discovered that cooking rice with a teaspoon of coconut oil then refrigerating it for 12 hours more than halves the number of calories absorbed by the body. The change remains even if it is reheated.

The researchers from the College of Chemical Sciences in Colombo, Sri Lanka, say simply changing the way rice is cooked could help tackle the obesity epidemic.

"Because obesity is a growing health problem, especially in many developing countries, we wanted to find food-based solutions," says Dr Sudhair James, who is at the College of Chemical Sciences, Colombo, Western, Sri Lanka.

"We discovered that increasing rice resistant starch (RS) concentrations was a novel way to approach the problem."

By using a specific heating and cooking regimen, he says, the scientists concluded that "if the best rice variety is processed, it might reduce the calories by about 50-60 percent."

Rice contains around 240 calories per cup. The trick to bringing down the calorie content is by changing how the body digests it.

Usually the starchy carbohydrates in rice are broken down in the small intestine where they become glucose and are eventually stored as fat. However, cooking rice with a teaspoon of coconut oil, and then chilling for 12 hours appears to make half of the carbohydrate indigestible so it passes through the body without becoming fat.

Goodbye, math and history: Finland wants to abandon teaching subjects at school
http://qz.com/

Finland already has one of the best school education systems. It always ranks near the top in mathematics, reading, and science in the prestigious PISA rankings (the 2012 list, pdf) by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. Teachers in other countries flock to its schools to learn from a country that is routinely praised as just a really, really wonderful place to live.

But the country is not resting on its laurels. Finland is considering its most radical overhaul of basic education yetâ€"abandoning teaching by subject for teaching by phenomenon. Traditional lessons such as English Literature and Physics are already being phased out among 16-year-olds in schools in Helsinki.

Instead, the Finns are teaching phenomenaâ€"such as the European Union, which encompasses learning languages, history, politics, and geography. No more of an hour of history followed by an hour of chemistry. The idea aims to eliminate one of the biggest gripes of students everywhere: “What is the point of learning this?” Now, each subject is anchored to the reason for learning it.

Pasi Silander, Helsinki’s development manager, says the world has changed with the spread of technology and many of the old ways of teaching have no practical purpose. “Young people use quite advanced computers,” he told the Independent. “In the past the banks had lots of  bank clerks totting up figures but now that has totally changed.”

Many teachers in Finland, many of whom have been teaching single subjects their whole careers, oppose the changes. It is not hard to see why. The new system is much more collaborative, forcing teachers from different areas to come up with the curriculum together.  Marjo Kyllonen, Helsinki’s education manager and the person responsible for reforming the system in the capital, calls this “co-teaching” and teachers who agree to it get a small bonus on top of their salaries.

Kyllonen told the Independent: “There are schools that are teaching in the old fashioned way which was of benefit in the beginnings of the 1900sâ€"but the needs are not the same and we need something fit for the 21st century.”

Later this month, she is proposing that the new system is rolled out across the whole country by 2020. Will the rest of the world follow the Finns’ lead?

SINGAPORE â€" Lee Kuan Yew, the founding father and first prime minister of Singapore who transformed that tiny island outpost into one of the wealthiest and least corrupt countries in Asia, died on Monday morning. He was 91.

“The prime minister is deeply grieved to announce the passing of Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, the founding prime minister of Singapore,” a statement posted on the prime minister’s official website said. “Mr. Lee passed away peacefully at the Singapore General Hospital today at 3:18 am.”

Mr. Lee was prime minister from 1959, when Singapore gained full self-government from the British, until 1990, when he stepped down. Late into his life he remained the dominant personality and driving force in what he called a First World oasis in a Third World region.

Former ally: Aquino’s last 500 days in office zombie presidency

MANILA, Philippinesâ€"Worse than a lame duck, a “zombie presidency” is what Filipinos can expect during the last 500 days of President Benigno Aquino III’s term as a result of the Mamasapano debacle, according to his former ally, Akbayan Rep. Walden Bello.

“What a wasted presidency! Destroyed by pigheadedness and blind loyalty to incompetent or corrupt subordinates,” Bello said, commenting on the political impact of the Philippine National Police board of inquiry report on the bungled Special Action Force (SAF) operation that cost the lives of 44 elite police commandos.

The board of inquiry found that it was President Aquino who gave the go-signal for the operation, called “Oplan Exodus,” and that he broke the PNP chain of command by allowing the suspended PNP chief, Alan Purisima, a personal friend, to handle it instead of the PNP officer in charge, Deputy Director General Leonardo Espina.

Bello, who severed ties with the majority coalition last week over what he considered a cover-up in the Mamasapano investigation, said the Aquino administration had been spiraling downward in the aftermath of the botched police operation.

“The high point of the administration was the passage of the reproductive health bill and the elections of May 2013. The beginning of the unraveling was when the President initially defended [the Priority Development Assistance Fund],” Bello said, referring to the defunct pork barrel system.

“The President entered negative territory with his stubborn defense of [the Disbursement Acceleration Program and Budget Secretary Florencio Abad], then went on a death spiral with Mamasapano,” he said.

“For the 500 plus days we will have a zombie presidency, I fear,” he added.
