The world's happiest cities

by Zack O'Malley Greenburg
Forbes.com, Wednesday, September 2, 2009, 11:37 am PDT

Ever since Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers appeared in the 1933 film Flying Down to Rio, the world has been fascinated with Rio de Janeiro. Popular perception of the city is infused with images of starry-eyed youngsters dancing into the dusk, backed by imposing mountains and dark sea.

That view has propelled Rio to the top of our list of the world's happiest cities. Famous for its annual Carnaval festival (starting Feb. 13 next year), the second-largest metropolis in South America finished first among 50 cities in a recent survey conducted by Simon Anholt, an author and policy adviser.

"Brazil is associated with all these qualities of good humor and good living and Carnaval," says Anholt. "Carnaval is very important--it's the classic image that people have of Rio, and it's an image of happiness."

Next on the list is the top city from Down Under: Sydney, Australia. Known for balmy weather, friendly locals and an iconic opera house, Sydney fared well in Anholt's survey because of its association with a popular brand--Australia.

"It's where everybody would like to go," he says. "Everybody thinks they know Australia because they've seen Crocodile Dundee. There's this image of this nation of people who basically sit around having barbecues."

Rounding out the top five are third-ranked Barcelona, Spain, which Anholt calls "the classic Mediterranean city"; fourth-ranked Amsterdam, Netherlands, because Anholt's young respondents "know you can smoke dope in the bars"; and Melbourne, Australia, which makes the list simply because it's in Australia.

"People know it's in Australia, and that it's full of Australians," says Anholt. "Therefore, it must be fun."

The data Anholt provided for our list is part of his Nation Brands Index, which he developed in 2005. The latest incarnation, the 2009 Anholt-GfK Roper City Brands Index, was released in June. The data was compiled from online interviews with 10,000 respondents in 20 countries.

Happiness is difficult to quantify, and Anholt acknowledges that his data is less an indicator of where local populations are happiest than a reflection of respondents' thinking about where they could imagine themselves happy.

"This is a survey of perception, not a survey of reality," he says. "People write me all the time and say 'that's not true.' It probably isn't true, but it's what people think. The gap between perception and reality is what interests city governments."

The French historian Fernand Braudel wrote that "Happiness, whether in business or private life, leaves very little trace in history." But a perception of happiness leaves a strong trace on the balance sheets of cities that depend on conventions, tourism and an influx of talent.

Anholt notes that the results of his survey reflect the longstanding reputation of Mediterranean and Latin American cities as non-stop party locales.

"It's pretty much the expected bunch," says Anholt. "Though I'm a little surprised about Spain outdoing Italy. It's interesting that the Spanish are perceived as being happier than the Italians--I find the Spanish rather gloomy."

Still, Barcelona--Spain's highest-ranked city--has plenty of supporters.

"The beauty of the city and its environs, along with affordable housing and business opportunities, is the fantastic lifestyle," says Michelle Finkelstein, a vice president at travel agency Our Personal Guest. "There's not the stress of getting a child into the best preschool--the public ones are good and close by. And they have the top soccer team and some of the best weather in Europe."

Other places in the world that lack the metropolitan flair of the cities on this list are often identified with the notion of happiness. "Anyone lucky enough to visit the magical Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan would know that there is no competition: There can be no happier place," says Patricia Schultz, author of 1,000 Places to See Before You Die. "This small Buddhist nation of incredibly stunning beauty follows a unique guiding philosophy of GNH--Gross National Happiness. You can see it in their open faces--they smile from the heart. Barcelona has nothing on them."

Global rivalries notwithstanding, Anholt notes that his findings more or less support historical trends, with one notable exception.

"The cities on this list would probably be the same if I'd been running this survey in 1890, aside from Sydney and Melbourne," he says. "Australia is kind of a branding miracle."

Not bad for a former penal colony.

Top 5 World's Happiest Cities:

1. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
2. Sydney, Australia
3. Barcelona, Spain
4. Amsterdam, Netherlands
5. Melbourne, Australia

The Cars Thieves Love Most
by Hannah Elliott

Tuesday, September 1, 2009

Just because your Honda is a clunker doesn't mean it's safe to leave it unlocked while you make a coffee run.

Approximately 1 million vehicles are stolen nationwide every year, but the 1994 Honda Accord is the most stolen car, according to an Aug. 24 report by the National Insurance Crime Bureau. Last year, more than 55,000 Accords were stolen in the U.S. Needless to say, the thieves aren't after style, just substance.

Older vehicles like the 15-year-old Accord are pinched so often because their lack of theft-deterrent technology makes them easy to access and their parts--headlights, tires, catalytic converters and anything containing copper--are valuable on the black market. It also comes down to pure numbers, says Frank Scafidi, a spokesman for the National Insurance Crime Bureau: "Hondas and Toyotas, they sell millions of these things, so there are more targets, obviously."

Most neighborhood hooligans wouldn't know how to steal a Lamborghini, but when it comes to more mundane rides they are equal-opportunity snatchers, Scafidi says. The vehicles most likely to get nabbed range from the tiny Honda Civic, ranked second on our list, to the fifth-ranked Dodge Ram pickup. Even minivans aren't immune--the 2000 Dodge Caravan is a hot target as well.

Here are the top 5 cars thieves love most:

1. 1994 Honda Accord
2. 1995 Honda Civic
3. 1989 Toyota Camry
4. 1997 Ford F-150 Pickup
5. 2004 Dodge Ram Pickup

German Boy Named for Holy War
AP
posted: 14 HOURS 33 MINUTES AGO

BERLIN (Sept. 2) -- A Berlin court has upheld rulings in favor of parents who sought to name their son Djehad, a variation on the Arabic "jihad," or holy war.

The superior court upheld two lower court rulings allowing the name on grounds that it is recognized for males in Arabic-speaking countries.

German authorities who register births had objected to the name, saying it could be harmful for the child given the associations with Islamic terrorism.

But the court said in a ruling Tuesday that the name's meaning is rooted in the requirement to spread the Muslim faith, although it has recently become linked â€" especially since the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks â€" with radical Islam.

German law restricts parents from giving their children names that could be interpreted as harmful.

U.S. Conservatives Attack UNESCO's Sex Ed Guidelines

By BRUCE CRUMLEY / PARIS Bruce Crumley / Paris â€" 45 mins ago

Any attempt to decrease the number of unwanted pregnancies and slow the spread of sexually transmitted diseases like HIV around the world has to be a good thing, right? That's what the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) thought. But now it finds itself under fire from American conservatives for proposing a new set of guidelines on sex education in schools as a means of helping young people avoid potentially dangerous sexual activity.

The guidelines, which UNESCO is still preparing, recommend that national governments, education ministries and school systems around the world provide students with more sex education at an earlier age than they usually learn it now, and then, as they mature, offer them more detailed information about avoiding pregnancies and disease. The goal is simple: with contraception often not an option in many parts of the world - and vaccines to prevent diseases like AIDS still unavailable - UNESCO hopes that teaching children more about the risks of sexual activity will help them steer clear of such perils. The organization believes this could be one way to scale back the 111 million new cases of sexually transmitted diseases reported among people aged 10 to 24 globally each year, and similarly reduce the 4.4 million abortions sought by women aged 15 to 19 annually.

But a handful of conservative U.S. news pundits have been denouncing the guidelines since late August, when they snapped up the online version of the UNESCO working document. The biggest issue for critics is the recommendation that educators begin teaching students introductory reproductive and sexual subjects earlier than usual: between the ages of five and eight. More detailed information would then be taught to kids aged nine to 12. Between the ages of 12 and 15, UNESCO recommends students be instructed about contraception, and the differences between "safe abortion and post-abortion care" and potentially life-threatening forms of improvised pregnancy termination.

Given their hostility to abortion and their insistence that abstinence is the only legitimate way of avoiding pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease, it isn't surprising that some American conservative and evangelical groups have reacted angrily to the UNESCO document. "U.N. Report Advocates Teaching Masturbation to 5-Year-Olds" read the headline of Foxnews.com's Aug. 26 story. "New UNESCO Sex Education Guidelines Call on Children to Promote Abortions," a Lifenews.com article announced on Sept.1, the same day conservative news site CNSNews.com warned that "U.S. Funds U.N. Group That Supports Teaching 5-to-8-Year Olds about Masturbation."

The obsession with onanism is a bit curious, given that the 102-page document only mentions masturbation five times: twice to explain what the term means to five-to-eight-year-olds, saying teachers should note that it's "not harmful, but should be done in private," and the other three times in a section referring to nine-to-15-year-olds, pointing out that these kids should be told it "does not cause physical or emotional harm" and is "often a person's first experience of sexual pleasure."

Yet, that focus and the wider conservative reaction to the UNESCO document seems to reflect a similar strategy to the one employed to fight President Barack Obama's proposed health reform. First, critics launched the debate before UNESCO has even finished its recommendations, which are based on analysis of 80 different studies of sex education programs. Second, they broadcast sensational accusations of the offending proposal's intent to better grab - and alarm - the public. (See pictures of the health-care debate turning angry.)

"This isn't about teaching five-year-olds how to masturbate, but rather providing young people with better information about themselves and how they can avoid trouble and danger," says Sue Williams, chief of UNESCO's press relations department in Paris. "We're not surprised by this reaction, nor the places it's coming from. In fact, our very goal with such recommendations is to initiate the kind of debate, reflection, and action that moves the topic forward. Our desire now, however, is that debate be both informed and balanced."

Apart from the outcry from American conservative groups, however, it appears the response to the recommendations elsewhere in the world has been mostly calm. Williams says the reaction and press coverage has largely been supportive, including in "conservative places like the Solomon Islands and Ethiopia, which have to balance traditional values with pressing problems created by unwanted pregnancy and disease."

So what happens now? Detractors will probably continue hammering at the document even as it's readied for the Sex and Relationships Education Conference starting Sept. 7 in Birmingham, England. The guidelines will then be presented to the U.N. in New York City sometime in October, at which point governments and education officials can either act on or ignore them as they wish. There's a chance that, in the U.S., UNESCO's recommendations will be drowned out by the knee-jerk outrage of conservative pundits. But at least the guidelines can undergo sober and thoughtful examination in more open-minded places ... like Ethiopia.

Bitterness is just one bite away fron bittersweetness, which is actually more sweet than bitter.

Bitterness is much better than tastelessness, just as hatred is better than indifference.

panaw - trip, voyage.

The word is formally used as a euphemism for death, as in "Ningpanaw na sija sa laing kalibotan."

Another example:

Ang hanap nijang panan-aw ningpanaw lahos sa kapunawpunawan
Sa dihang ijang nalantaw nga imo lang sijang gitiawtiawan.

Kining baboy, gigamit baja ni sauna during the Jolo campaigns against the Moros in the early years of American rule sa Pilipinas. By defiling the bodies of dead juramentados with pig parts, the Americans, it is claimed, were able to put a stop to the deadly suicide attacks.

This was apparently an early example of those unorthodox tactics which later on became the hallmark of CIA operations.

My understanding here is that if you already have the condition, that is, if you have symptoms of artery disease, it's OK to take aspirin daily. What the study says is that it is not advisable for persons who are healthy in this regard.

Pero mao lagi ni, kitang laymen mosamot kakutaw atong utok aning mga research-research.

Daily aspirin may do more harm than good: study
By AFP - Mon Aug 31, 6:00 AM PDT

LONDON (AFP) - Healthy people taking a daily dose of aspirin to prevent heart attacks may be doing themselves more harm than good, according to a new study by British scientists.

Researchers found that the risks of bleeding from taking aspirin were such that its routine use in healthy people "cannot be supported" -- although they did not dispute its use in patients with a history of vascular problems.

The results of the Aspirin for Asymptomatic Atherosclerosis (AAA) study add to a long-running debate about whether the potential dangers of taking aspirin could outweigh the benefits from reducing the risk of clots.

"We know that patients with symptoms of artery disease, such as angina, heart attack or stroke, can reduce their risk of further problems by taking a small dose of aspirin each day," said Professor Peter Weissberg, medical director of the British Heart Foundation which helped fund the research.

"The findings of this study agree with our current advice that people who do not have symptomatic or diagnosed artery or heart disease should not take aspirin, because the risks of bleeding may outweigh the benefits."

The study was led by Professor Gerry Fowkes from the Wolfson Unit for Prevention of Peripheral Vascular Diseases in Edinburgh, Scotland, and presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress in Barcelona Sunday.

It involved 3,350 men and women aged 50 to 75 years who tests revealed may have a condition where the arteries in their legs were furred up -- but who had no symptoms of heart disease or history of heart attack.

They were given either a daily 100 mg dose of aspirin or a placebo (a dummy pill) and monitored over eight years.

While there was no difference in the number of heart attacks, strokes and other cardiovascular events suffered, major bleeding occurred in two percent of the aspirin group compared to just 1.2 percent of the placebo group.

Merese kang "merese"ha ka kay wa pud kay Ininglis.,
Ahong duda aning "merese" kay corruption sa pronunciation of the first 3 syllables of the Latin word "misericordia". In both legal and ecclesiastical usage, this word means mercy or compassion. Ang "mercy" ug "misery" mao-mao ra, he he. The idea is that if you are at the mercy of God or a judge, you are by that token already in a state of misery. I guess we unfortunately adopted the nuances of the extended meaning. When we say "merese", instead of wishing mercy for someone, we taunt them with the idea of suffering and damnation.

I hope we'll have an evenly-cadenced, slow but sure ripening as a democracy. No more EDSAs. The eighties for me were mind-blowing days of youth that I no longer have the desire nor stamina to live through again.
